Thepre-abricated systemsare ecientin termso energy, costsandtimeandenabledabold design within thechallengingbuildingconstraintso theschool year. Goingorward, thebuilding aspiresto economiceciencyo runningcosts through easeo replacement o materialsand useo un-der-foorheating.
Aesthetically, thisis a gentle, undulatingbuilding- it isin stark contrasttothe existingschoolbut relates toit in itspositioningandits simplicity.However, it is a successul. contemporary statement in its own right. Wewelcomedthe opportunity toexperiment with new materials which in turnshapedthe nalbuilding.
Practically, wesought toprobe thenature o how schoolsare experiencedbythoseattendingthem. Makingoutdoorspaceparto theteachingareaandusingchild-riendly materialsanda consideredlayout, it aimsto enhancethelearningexperienceandbalancethechildsexperienceo anaturalandman-madeenvironment. Teachingoptions are fexible, some children can
play outsidewhileothersarebeingtaughtinside. Eachmaterial. vista, andcomposition within thebuilding wasinormed by theex-perienceo thechildren butalsotheteacherswhoworktomaketheschoolenvironmentthe bestpossibleoreach child. Theirpracticalconcernsorspace, quietzonesand play areasdrovethedesign orus.

Wehave been askedto address a key London site which already hasap-proval oran unusualbuildingwhich ourclientseelis unbuildablein thiseconomicclimate.
Thekey elementstothis buildingrelateto thetransition in scalerom ourstorey buildings to a seven storey building, we looked at thistransitionthrough theuse o scalein the acadeandthematerial. Regardsscalewehavelookedto breakthe buildingup intoverticalslats workingwith theexistingscale o thissection o theBrompton Road. Theverticality wasalsosomethingweeltrequiredtoallow thebuildingtostandout andbecomealandmarkon thisstretch.
Regardsmaterialswehaveworkedup theideao addinga delicatetrans-parentacade, to seemovementand shadow throughouttheday andnight.Thetopstorey, which is oneduplex apartmentactsas steppedbackbeacon,again changingthe scaleandmaterialmakesthe buildingsit moreeasilyintoits surroundings.
Thebuildingatlevels01-07 areulldwell aspectshigh endapartments, atgroundlevelitcontinuesthecommercialaspecto thestreet, totherearisamewsbasewith accesstolowergroundfoorlevelallowingorparkingandservices. Ournextstepis topresentitto theRoyalBorough oKensington andC helsea.
