TRANSCRIPT
20th March 2019
From the Principal…
There is often a bit of a silver lining in unexpected places. We have been looking at doing our
best for the environment and this week we were presented with an opportunity! The
photocopier was a victim of the storm we recently had in Terrey Hills. This week we have
been without a copier or printer. Notes have been emailed home- so now it is for the
parents to be responsible to read their emails, rather than dig through students’ bags!
Interviews
You will have received an invitation to enrol through school interviews to reserve a timeslot
to discuss your child’s progress so far. Parent –Teacher interviews will be on Tuesday 2nd
April for K/ 1 Beetles, 1 Bees and 3/ 4 Crickets. All other class interviews will be held on
Wednesday 10th April.
To access the online booking go to:
www.schoolinterviews.com.au and enter the event code gbxev
Grandfriends’Day
Grandfriends’ Day is fast approaching and there will be an email about this soon. Please
have grandparents reserve the morning of Thursday 11th April.
Coffee and Play Morning
It was great to see so many pre-schoolers enjoying the morning yesterday. K Ladybugs gave
us a preview of their Grandfriends’ Day item. They were amazing! The amount of text they
had committed to memory was outstanding. Well done and thank you to Mrs Walker and
Ladybugs!
If you missed out on yesterday’s visit, there will be another in Term 2 on Thursday 20th June.
Harmony Day
The SRC project for Harmony Day is to raise some funds for Happy Schools in Cambodia.
Students are asked to wear something orange tomorrow- a headband, socks, T shirt etc.
and to bring a gold coin or two to donate to the cause. All money raised goes directly to the
project schools. Harmony Day is tomorrow- Thursday, 21st March!

CROSS COUNTRY TRAINING - For the next two Thursdays, interested students are invited to join the running train that will explore the Cross Country Course and build up a bit of fitness. Please join Mr Watson and Mr Crowley on the oval at 8.10am. Students will be finished by 8.40. We will be starting next week. (week 9)
ATHLETICS - It may seem a long way off but for your information, the 1500m track event will be included in this year's program and will be held at school at a date to be confirmed.
E-Safety
This week the office of eSafety Commissioner launched a new campaign called “Start the Chat”. The Start the Chat
campaign encourages parents, carers and educators to visit esafety.gov.au for information about how to approach online
safety with 5-18 year olds.
To support the campaign, eSafety Commissioner has updated their web content for parents and carers and will be re-
branding it as ‘eSafety Parents.’ This includes up-to-date information and resources covering audience-specific online
safety issues and concerns. We encourage you to visit the esafety website and Start the Chat.
Welcome Movie Night – Reminder this Saturday!
We are hoping, weather permitting, Ferdinand hopes to arrive at Terrey Hills on Saturday Night, so don't forget to buy your tickets through munch monitor. If the event is cancelled due to weather/soggy grounds we will let you know as soon as possible! Fingers crossed If you have any questions please direct them to [email protected] or 0439 463 406"

Health Alert
Keep coughing kids home and see your GP. Whooping cough (also called pertussis) began increasing across NSW towards the end of 2018, especially in children between the ages of 5 and 14 years. NSW Health anticipates that this increase will continue into 2019.
School-aged children who are infected with whooping cough usually experience a troubling cough that can persist for months, but they rarely get severe illness. However they can spread the infection to younger siblings and other more vulnerable people, who are at higher risk of severe disease. Whooping cough can be a life threatening infection in babies.
What can you do to prevent whooping cough?
1. Make sure vaccinations are up to date for all family members 2. Be alert for symptoms of whooping cough 3. Keep coughing kids home, to prevent them spreading the infection to others, and see your GP to get
them tested for whooping cough
For more information on Whooping Cough and vaccination visit the NSW Health Website(https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/whoopingcough/Pages/default.aspx)
Parent Information – NAPLAN online
NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy – important skills that each child needs to succeed in school and life. The NAPLAN
tests are designed to help us make sure students are on track with their literacy and numeracy development. Students in
Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in NAPLAN tests for reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and
punctuation) and numeracy.
Our Year 3 and Year 5 students will sit a practice test during next week, with Year 3 earlier in the week.
Between 14th May and 23rd May, our school will participate in NAPLAN Online. Students do not need to be computer
experts to take the NAPLAN test online. Making sure students have computer skills is part of our school curriculum, and
our teachers will ensure your child is familiar with the online format. To see the types of questions and interactive features
of NAPLAN Online, visit the public demonstration site.
If you have any questions about NAPLAN Online, please contact your child’s teacher.

Kindy and Year 1 Easter Hat Parade – Friday 12th April
On Thursday 11th April, our Kindergarten and Year 1 classes will be participating in an exciting craft lesson to make an
Easter hat. The Kindergarten students will be making their Easter hat with their Year 6 buddy. The Year 1 students will be
supported by Year 2 students to make their hats.
Parents of Kindergarten and Year 1 students are asked to send in either a piece of cardboard, an ice-cream container or
another item that your child can use to make into an Easter hat. Each child also needs to bring in some craft items that can
be used to decorate their hat. All of the craft items will be put together to share, so the children have a wide variety of
items to decorate with.
Please send all of the above items to school on Wednesday 10th April.
The children will be participating in an Easter hat parade on Friday 12th April at 2pm in the hall. Parents are invited to stay
and watch the parade.
If you have any questions please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Biala homework program
Are you looking for an opportunity to volunteer?
Would you like to help Aboriginal high school students with their homework?
Volunteers are needed for a homework support program for Aboriginal girls living at Biala Hostel in Sydney. Biala is a hostel where Aboriginal girls from the country board during school terms so they can attend high school in Sydney. Tutoring will be on Monday evenings from 7.30-8.30pm at the hostel in Allambie Heights. Ideally volunteers will be available every Monday, but less frequent tutoring may also be possible.
Interested? Contact Keren for more information: [email protected]. Please feel free to pass this on to friends, family and colleagues. Anyone is welcome to apply.
