Lesson 1The first lesson is a pre-reading lesson. We will use this lesson to introduce the book ‘Wonder’.

Introduce the bookThe book is about one special boy. But in a way it is about all not –ordinary people. We are going to watch a video about a special girl.

Hand out The worksheet with questions, worksheet Lesson 1.

Show filmAfter watching let the students discus these questions in groups of 4 for 10 minutes. Ask each group to rapport something of their own experiences. We will start with a small YouTube clip of Kenadie Jourdin-Bromley.http://youtu.be/KSz0D-o6D6k (3:51) Show only the beginning of the clip (max. 2min)Just let the students watch the clip.

If you prefer a more Dutch approach, you might want to show a part of http://youtu.be/Vvhj_H3i9BY (7:13). Again only show a maximum of two minutes. This is a clip of Kenadie at Paul de Leeuw’s show. It has Dutch subtitles.

If a discussion is too difficult in English, you might want to consider doing the discussion in Dutch.

You can find more information on http://touchedbykenadie.com

Hand outWonder, by R.J. Palacio.

The teacher reads the first 5/7 pages. Then students can read for themselves.Option: teacher continues reading with a small group of students who have difficulty with reading.

HomeworkAnswer the 3 questions about Part 1.

Goal

Do you admire Kenadie’s parents? What would you do if you had a sister like her?

Do you know any special children?

What kind of ‘disease’ does he/she have?

How did you react? How did others react?

Do you treat him/her different than you treat other friends?

Lesson 2This lesson is the first while reading lesson. The students have read the first part of the book, the part of August. It is about 80 pages, which could be too much, but certainly manageable. The give time with each part is just a suggestion. You can vary if pleased.

Intro5 minutesAsk about the reading: easy, difficult? Talk about the homework questions.

Questions part 1

Answer the following questions after reading the first part of the book.

Why is August going to a new school?

His mother thinks that it is better for August. It is the right time.

Who are Jack, Julian and Charlotte?

Three students who guide August through school.

What did Jack say about August at Halloween?

That he would kill himself if he looked liked August.

Discussion15 minutesForm groups and give them the discussion assignment about home schooling. Every group writes one or two of their findings on a central paper of a flip chart. So we will have one sheet with advantages of going to school and one with the disadvantages. Discuss them with the whole class.

Vocabulary15 minutesHand out the worksheet to make a description of their idol. Students do this individually but they can help each other.

Collect the adjectives on the smart board, let them hear the pronunciation of the words.

Idols15minIncluded is an information sheet about body and face features. ‘Vocabulary to describe body and face features’.

Your students have to write the name of your idol in the middle of an empty piece of paper. They can also draw his/her face/body.

Your students have to try to collect as many describing words in English about him/her: what makes him/her beautiful? Think about physical virtues but also about behaviour, what they do that impresses you. They can use the information sheet, a dictionary and their neighbour.

Let your students put their idol on the wall/bulletin board. This way your students can view each other’s work.

Goal.Vocabulary, describing people.

Lyrics. Beautiful15 minutesListen to the song Beautiful by Christina Aguilera.http://youtu.be/eAfyFTzZDMM (3:58) Or search for the song in YouTube.

After they have heart the song the first time, hand out the worksheet. Play the song at least two times, to make sure every student has the answers.

Every day is so wonderfulThen suddenly it's hard to breathe. Now and then I get insecureFrom all the pain, I'm so ashamed.

I am beautiful no matter what they say.Words can't bring me down.I am beautiful in every single way.Yes, words can't bring me down... Oh no.So don't you bring me down today.

To all your friends you're delirious,

Page 9: yal.weebly.comyal.weebly.com/.../5126344/wonder-teacher_pack_jr.docx  · Web viewSo we will have one sheet with advantages of going to school and one with ... hundred thousand. miles,

9

So consumed in all your doom.Trying hard to fill the emptiness. The pieces gone, left the puzzle undone.Ain’t that the way it is?

You are beautiful no matter what they sayWords can't bring you down....oh noYou are beautiful in every single wayYes, words can't bring you down, oh, noSo don't you bring me down today...

No matter what we do(no matter what we do)No matter what we say(no matter what we say)We're the song inside the tuneFull of beautiful mistakes

And everywhere we go(and everywhere we go)The sun will always shine(the sun will always, always shine)And tomorrow we might wake on the other side

We are beautiful no matter what they sayYes, words won't bring us down, no, noWe are beautiful in every single wayYes, words can't bring us down, oh, noSo don't you bring me down today

Oh, yeah, don't you bring me down today, yeah, oohDon't you bring me down ooh... today

Pick students who will give you the answer out loud, or read them yourself. Pay attention to the words they had to fill in. How are they all related to the book?

GoalMake students more aware of all kinds of learning activities at their age besides the cognitive ones. Enlarge their describing vocabulary. Also practise speaking English by practising their pronunciation. Practice listening skills with the song.

Lesson 3This lesson is the second while reading lesson. The students have read the second and third part of the book, the part of Summer and Jack. It is about 45 pages.

The give time with each part is just a suggestion. You can vary if you like.

Intro5 minutes Welcome students. Ask students what they thought of the different angle of Via and Summer. In what way was the story different for Auggie and Via? What do they think: Did Via like the fact that Auggie went to another school? What are the differences between the perspectives of Via and Summer? (Summer has had a choice, Via has not). Auggie is not a handsome boy. But what does he look like? Your students are going to draw a picture of him later this lesson.

YouTube10 minutes: show the film of Jono Lancaster.http://youtu.be/pvsFGQwdPq8 (1:19)Or seach for Jono Lancaster, The one show BBC1.Watch the clip at least twice. While watching, let your students answer the following questions.

Back to the book10/15 minutes Students have to read 5 pieces of text from part 2. They have to put them in the right order. They have to do this again for part 3. They can check their order with their partner. Write down the answers on the board or discuss in class.

…4….p 100 “Mom, I’ m fifteen! Everybody my age takes the subway by themselves!”“She can take the subway home,” said Dad from the other room.

…2……p 91 What I always loved most about middle school was that it was separate and different from home. I could go there and be Olivia Pullman – not Via, which is my name at home.

…1……p 84 I don’t remember the day they brought August home from the hospital.I said: ”It doesn’t look like Lilly. That was the name of a doll Grans had given 1 me when Mom was pregnant so I could practice being a big sister.

…3..…p 94 It was obvious to me that Ella and Miranda had gotten together a few times during the summer without me, though they never actually said that.

…5.…p 116 “Well, I’m telling Mom and Dad about Jack Will if you stop going to school, “ I answered. “Tushman will probably call you into school and make Jack and those other kids apologize to you in front of everyone…..

Part 3 Summer

…4….p 126 Basically , he heard Jack bad-mouthing him and saying really horrible things behind his back. It kind of explained his attitude, and now I knew why he’d been out “sick”.

…2…P 120 it was actually because I was playing Four Square with August that I found out about the Plague. Apparently this is a “game” that’s been going on since the beginning of the year.

…3..p 122 (At her Haloweenparty) You know, Summer,” said Savanna, “you would be a lot more popular if you didn’t hang out with him so much. I’m going to be completely honest with you: Julian likes you. He wants to ask you out.

…1..p 119 I sat with him that first day because I felt sorry about him. That’s all.

…5…p 132 “It’s so weird,” Jack said. “I have no idea why he’s mad at me all of a sudden. None. Can’t you at least give me a hint?” “Bleeding Scream,” I whispered in his ear, and then walked away.

GoalThis exercise has as goal to check if your students have read the book. If they didn’t, they can’t answer the questions. Another goal is that your students have to think about the timeline of the story.
