Y3 WEEKLY MATHEMATICAL HOME LEARNING 13.7.20 We have now simplified our Maths Home Learning into Basic Learning and Extension Activities. The Basic Learning is the daily Mental Maths and a chunk of the Main Maths. A chunk could be anything from 15 minutes in Years 1 & 2 to 45 minutes to an hour in Years 5 & 6 - according to what works for your family. Quality is better than quantity. If you only have 15 minutes when you can all concentrate, then that is enough. Little and often is the best approach to embedded learning in our brains. If you have more time you can also do the Extension Activities. Here you will find a range of options – most of them open ended investigations and problems to solve. If you want a real challenge, go on the link that says Extra Challenge. KEY AREAS OF LEARNING FOR THIS WEEK IN YEAR 3 Draw accurately Recognise and describe 2D shapes Recognise and describe 3D shapes Telling the time to 5 minutes MENTAL MATHS Try to do 5 minutes of mental maths every day if possible. Even if you only manage the mental maths every day you will be helping to embed key, basic number facts. These facts form the basis of all other Maths learning. Later in the day/at the end of the day, if it fits with your family, do the mental maths again or chat about the other Maths learning, relating it as much as possible to real life, but only briefly. This will again, help to embed the learning. Little and often helps to make that learning stick.

Y3 WEEKLY MATHEMATICAL HOME LEARNING 13.7.20 We have now simplified our Maths Home Learning into Basic Learning and Extension Activities. The Basic

Learning is the daily Mental Maths and a chunk of the Main Maths. A chunk could be anything from 15

minutes in Years 1 & 2 to 45 minutes to an hour in Years 5 & 6 - according to what works for your family.

Quality is better than quantity. If you only have 15 minutes when you can all concentrate, then that is

enough.

Little and often is the best approach to embedded learning in our brains.

If you have more time you can also do the Extension Activities. Here you will find a range of options – most

of them open ended investigations and problems to solve. If you want a real challenge, go on the link that

says Extra Challenge.

KEY AREAS OF LEARNING FOR THIS WEEK IN YEAR 3

• Draw accurately

• Recognise and describe 2D shapes

• Recognise and describe 3D shapes

• Telling the time to 5 minutes

MENTAL MATHS Try to do 5 minutes of mental maths every day if possible. Even if you only manage the mental maths every

day you will be helping to embed key, basic number facts. These facts form the basis of all other Maths

learning. Later in the day/at the end of the day, if it fits with your family, do the mental maths again or

chat about the other Maths learning, relating it as much as possible to real life, but only briefly. This will

again, help to embed the learning. Little and often helps to make that learning stick.

Monday Counting in 3s, 4s, 30s and 40s. Use a number line or hundred square to help you if you like. What is the connection between counting in 3s and counting in 30s?

Tuesday Making links between multiplication and division.: The answer is 4. What is the division

calculation?

I know that 2 X 4 =8 so it could be 8÷2 =4 OR I know that 5X 4 =20 so it could be 20÷5 =4

Wednesday

Draw 3 more pairs of parallel lines, and 3 more pairs of perpendicular lines.

Remember to use arrows to mark parallel lines, and a little square in the corner to mark

perpendicular lines.

Thursday

Friday Play ‘Hit the Button’ Times Tables on Top Marks. Can you beat your score?

MAIN MATHS We are continuing to use the White Rose Maths remote learning videos, as they are now in line with the

BBC Bitesize lessons. We are now on week 10 (w/c 29th June). The White Rose videos can be found by

following the link below, and going to the ‘Week 10’ lessons:

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-3/

And the BBC Bitesize lessons are the ones from the 29th June – 3rd July. They can be found by following this

link: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/tags/zmyxxyc/year-3-and-p4-lessons

We have adapted parts of the White Rose worksheets for this learning letter.

Do remember that you can get in touch if you would like us to email you the full sheets. Some parents

are doing this and we’re really happy to send them!

Monday – drawing accurately

These lines are not the correct length, so use the ruler drawn next to the line rather than your own ruler!

You don’t need to do this on the sheet – any piece of paper will do!

Tuesday – recognise and describe 2D shapes

MAKE IT REAL!

Go on a 2D shape hunt around your home. Remember – 2D shapes are completely FLAT, normally just a

picture or the face of a 3D shape. A piece of paper is not a rectangle, but the 2 biggest faces are.

Wednesday – recognise and describe 3D shapes

Thursday – 3D shapes (2)

Have a go at making some 3D shapes. It’s really tricky to do this accurately, but having a go will make you

think carefully about the properties you learnt about yesterday.

You could use playdough to make solid shapes, or playdough and straws / chop sticks / lolly sticks.

Here are a couple of Martha’s attempts – can you see what 3D shapes they are? (I found it really tricky to

make straight edges with playdough!)

What 3D shapes can you find at home or in the park?

Take a look at Martha’s video for this week to see how she got on!

The net of a 3D shape is what it looks like if it is opened out flat. For example:

20pyramid.

Have a go at making a net for a different 3D shape. Think carefully about the shapes of the different faces

and where they join. Can you fold it up into a 3D shape?

There are some 3D shapes nets worksheets on the website to have a go at too.

Friday – Telling the time to 5 minutes

Remember you could draw your own if you don’t want to print this out.

Practise telling the time at home. It is a skill that we never have quite enough time to spend

on in school, and of course is an essential one to master.

Connecting time to your daily routine is an important part of this, as are the number bonds

to 60!

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES Try to encourage children to show how they have worked these out. They could draw pictures, use trial and error, or try to work in an organised way to find all the possibilities.
