Learning Project – The Deep Sea

Topic – The Deep Sea: The bottom layer of the ocean is called the abyss and is home to some very strange and unusual

creatures. I would like you to research some of these creatures using these websites:

https://www.montereybayaquarium.org/animals/habitats/deep-sea

http://www.seasky.org/deep-sea/vampire-squid.html I want you to create your own set of top trump cards using the deep sea creatures you have just read about. You can choose which creatures you use and what categories you want to add along with scores. If you get stuck have a look at the categories alongside the creatures on the websites. The templates for the top trump cards can be found at the bottom Science: Bioluminescence: Lighting up Our Oceans - Many deep sea creatures possess a fascinating light-producing ability called bioluminescence https://www.nationalgeographic.co.uk/animals/2019/05/bioluminescence-explained Some fish dangle a lighted lure in front of their mouths to attract prey, while some squid shoot out bioluminescent liquid, instead of ink, to confuse their predators. What else can you find out about bioluminescence? https://safeyoutube.net/w/vLB6 How do some sea creatures rely on this for their survival? https://safeyoutube.net/w/4LB6

I would like you to choose a sea creature which uses bioluminescence (like the anglerfish) and create a poster fact sheet about it, including, where you would find the animal, what bioluminescence is and how their chosen sea creature uses it. Let’s Create: Artwork to Light up Your Life- Following on from what you have learned about bioluminescence, I would like you to create some bioluminescent sea creature inspired artwork. Based on the resources you have available at home, you could create a drawing or a model. Make sure you use bright colours and to be as realistic as possible. Music:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z4gmt39 follow the link and watch the videos about

dynamics in music. Complete activity 1 and 2.

Additional Activities

Be Active: Ask your child to try some yoga using the Cosmic Kids Youtube channel. There are lots of ‘Under the Sea’ themed yoga workouts and even a Moana-themed adventure! Or simply get stretching to some relaxing deep sea sound effects. Recommendation at least 2 hours of exercise a week. https://safeyoutube.net/w/Otw6 Time to Talk: Play a board game, facetime a member of your family you have not seen this week, enjoy a family indoor picnic or have a family dinner.

Let’s get Cooking: If you have or are able to get the ingredients, why not bake some yummy treats. Encourage your child to do this as independently as possible as it will support them in reading and following instructions, measuring ingredients accurately and read scales.

Additional learning resources you may wish to engage with

TTRockstars / Numbots – Your child’s log in details can be found at the front of their

exercise book

Purple Mash – Class teachers have assigned tasks linked to your learning that you can

have a go at and send back to them.

Twinkl - to access these resources click on the link and sign up using your own email

address and creating your own password. Use the offer code UKTWINKLHELPS.
