Monday Focus:This week we are continuing to critique fiction texts.

This lesson we will be focusing on critiquing thethemes in a text.

Task: Use the same text you used last week. You willbe using the same text throughout the week. Thetexts are in order of difficulty so choose the onethat is most appropriate to you. Then, complete thefocus question provided.Be sure to question ALL questions in full sentencesand provide the relevant evidence from the text tosupport your answers.

Texts:

Monday Focus: PersonificationTask:

1. First, make a list of 10 action verbs thatdescribe things that humans do. Think ofwhat you did last week.

2. Now, take a look around the house andwrite down 10 objects that you see.

3. Look at your two lists and find funny orinteresting ways to combine the objectswith the verbs. For example, you mightcome up with “pencil laughing” or“sandwich whispers.”

4. Use these word combinations to createpoetic sentences about each object.

Here are some examples:

Monday Focus: Chance vocabularyMUST DO Warm Up

Your awesome teacher is allowing you to organise a classparty! They are giving you $100 to spend on food, drinks anddecorations!

Research the cost of the things you would like to have at yourparty. Compile a list of all the items and their prices, ensuringthat the total cost does not exceed $100.

Task:

The below table has vocabulary that you would use in chanceand probability along with the definitions.

Page 3: Y E AR 6 T E RM 3 W E E K 9 WPS Flexible Learning Grid

1. Felix and his flying machinehttps://www.getepic.com/app/read/42791

2. Pop Classics: Back to the Futurehttps://www.getepic.com/app/read/77420

3. The great moving mysteryhttps://www.getepic.com/app/read/27575

Focus Questions:1. How effectively does the author

communicate the message(s) or theme(s) ofthe story?

2. Does the theme(s) emerge naturally fromthe story, or are they stated too obviously?

3. Does the theme overpower the story?4. Does the theme provide insight and

understanding for today’s problem as wellas those of the past?

Extension Questions:

Use the book you are currently reading andanalyse the text.

1. How effectively does the author uselanguage to bring the reader into the story?

My ham sandwich whispers loudly that it hatesbeing wrapped in plastic.

My alarm clock yells at me every morning.

The door protested as it opened slowly.

The stairs groaned as we walked on them.

5. Create 5 poetic sentences of your own.6. Take one of these sentences and plan a

personification poem.7. Write a draft and submit this for feedback.

Extension:Write 2 more personification poems and record avideo of yourself reading your poems, Submit forfeedback

The definitions and words are all jumbled up. Match thevocabulary words with their corresponding definitions(numbers and alphabets) from the table.

Thursday Focus: Individual Learning Goal

Task:Choose a just right book. This can be a hardcopybook, epic, sunshine online or sunshine classics. Youwill practice your reading goal. While you arereading you need to document how you aretracking with your goal. This can be in yourworkbook or book creator on your Ipad.

Just Right● Do you know most of the words in the text?● Do you understand what you are readingand can retell it?● Are you reading at a steady pace? You need to explain how you are using this goal anduse evidence from the book to support yourdiscussion.

Example response:Text name: Dinosaurs

My reading goal is to use a range of readingstrategies to comprehend texts.

While reading my text today I used summarisingand synthesising to help me understand my textbetter. I know that dinosaurs are extinct and livedon this earth many years ago. My text is aboutdinosaurs and where they lived, what they ate, whatthey look like and the different types. Dinosaurslived in all of the continents “Dinosaurs lived in all ofthe continents around the world” pg 2.

Thursday Focus: Writing a personification poem

Task: Today, you will write a personification poemdescribing the journey of a River.

Write the words about the river like, tumble, roar, serene, wavy, smooth, slosh, like glass, muddy, clear, crystalBe creative. I have also included some sentencestarters for you to help you.Sentence startersI was born…I grew…I became…I tumbled...

ExampleTopic: The River by Mrs Robertson

I was born in the clouds and fell to earth as rain.I grew bigger as I flowed down the river bankhugging the rocks and the fallen trees.

Thursday Focus:

MUST DO Warm Up: Come up with a math riddle for yourteacher or fellow student to solve. Post it on the googleclassroom stream. You can research some on google.

Task: ReviewCreate a video of something you have learnt this week or last.Be creative in how you present this. You could create;

- A video explaining what you have learnt- A book creator poster- A song or rap about what you have learnt- A video of you teaching someone the skill you learnt- Cook something for those master chefs out there!- A video of you pretending to teach a class

Include diagrams, images, pictures, examples, information andmore!

You can choose to focus on chance, decimals or fractions. Ask yourteacher if you would like to focus on another topic of math.

Extension:Go and answer any riddles posted on google classroom

Investigations

Science focus: Properties of Gas- Mixing solid with a liquid to create gas.

This is a very simple experiment that you probably do often. We now need to focus on what is actually happening when a solid is mixed with a liquid and how states ofmatter can change from one to another. Before you start, I need you to find the meaning for these words.

Vocabulary:

Inflate-

Fizz-

Gas-

Expand-

Acid-

Base

Exothermic (absorbs heat, so it feels cold)

Look for the experiment template in resources.
