W E L C O M EDear Year 9 Student,

Choosing the courses you’d like to study in year 10

and year 11 is an important milestone in your

education. Although for some having the opportunity

to create your own curriculum is exciting, it can also

raise a number difficult questions: Which subjects are

right for me? Which careers complement my choices?

What if I still don’t know what I want to do?

This booklet and the Options Evening are designed to

make this time less worrying for you and your

parents or carers. Combined with our weekly Options

Assemblies, I hope that you’ll be able to make

an informed decision about your learning

and confidently choose subjects that suit your

aspirations, skills and needs.

“Please use all the information available to you: this

booklet, advice from teachers, your tutors and your

family. All of these people know you well in some way

and can suggest whether they think a subject would

suit you as a learner.”

There are some important dates to keep in mind throughout thisprocess. Options Evening for Year 9 Students and Parents.Speak to Heads of DepartmentReceive your Options Booklet. Deadline for submission of your options Individual student interviews to discuss choices where we will meetwith students across the half term All students, parents and carers to be informed of final option choices Deadline for any request for changes to option choices The decisions you make in the next few weeks will have an impact onyour success at the end of Key Stage 4 and on the choices available toyou in the Sixth Form. We hope that the information provided allowsyou to make the right choices that will see you succeeding over thenext two years and beyond.

“May your choices reflectyour hopes not your fears”

Performance Measures

The way in which a school’s outcomes for students is judged has now changed. Rather than focusing on the percentage of students

that achieve 5A*-C grades including a pass in English and Maths, schools will be judged on new measures. In line with this, each

report you receive will contain details on your child’s Progress 8 and Attainment 8 grades.

The English Baccalaureate

The English Baccalaureate is a package of the most

academic GCSE subjects. Students studying for the

English Baccalaureate will take English (language

and literature), maths, science, a modern foreign

language and either history or geography.

Research suggests that studying this combination

provides students with greater opportunities in

further education and increases the likelihood that

a pupil will stay on in full-time education.

We expect all of our students who can to do the

English Baccalaureate combination of courses to

provide them with the best possible opportunities

for further and higher education. Students who do

the English Baccalaureate will still be able to pick

an “open” option.
