VISION STATEMENT We empower students to be responsible citizens who are innovative learners and collaborative problem solvers.

We immerse students in an engaging learning environment in partnership with the school community.

Welcome to Education Week 2016 The theme this year : sharing our stories, better learning, stronger communities.

The celebrate this year our students have been working hard on developing their skills in articulating what they know through reflection and have now begun developing goals to drive future learning. This has been a focus of the Visible Learning committee, led by Mrs Brooks who meet weekly and drive this pedagogical practice in all classes across the school.

This morning, parents participated in Student Led Reporting sessions in classrooms. Your child will have led you through a series of activities and work samples to demonstrate their knowledge across a range of Key Learning Areas.

Students were very excited about this opportunity to discuss their learning with their parents and it was wonderful to see so many parents able to join us during the morning.

Your reflections and comments will be triangulated with student and staff comments gathered on the morning to assist us when planning for the future. We thank you for taking the time to complete them and for your time commitment this morning.

Sad FarewellSad FarewellSad Farewell Recently, a number of staff attended the funeral of Mrs Jane Clarke, a former staff member. Mrs Clarke was an Assistant Principal and then Relieving Principal at Putney Public School. She was a valued and well respected member of staff and is sadly missed by her friends and colleagues at Putney.

Engaging the CommunityEngaging the CommunityEngaging the Community Mrs Ward and her Engaging the Community committee met with Class Parents recently to discuss how we currently engage the school and local community in student learning. 14 Class Parents attended and worked in pairs with a teacher to complete a matrix.

This information will be compiled with staff and P&C responses to develop a direction for the future. Many thanks to the Class Parents who attended on the day.

Student ToiletsStudent ToiletsStudent Toilets Just a reminder to all parents that the student toilet blocks are for student use only and should not be accessed by adults at any time. Thank you for your attention to this in future.

Respect for neighboursRespect for neighboursRespect for neighbours When dropping off and picking up students, parents are reminded to respect our neighbours and not park in driveways or on private property. I have again received a letter of concern by one of our neighbours and ask that parents be respectful of our neighbours rights.

Ryde council has been informed.

Finally, a reminder that the P&C Association AGM is being held on 8 August. I am looking forward to seeing lots of new faces as well as existing members of this association attend this meeting. See you there!

Science Enrichment Day Last Wednesday 25 students from Stage 3 were invited to a Science Day at Marsden High School. Students partici-pated in practical activities based on Biology and Forensics. Some of the activities included; looking at a dissected lamb’s heart, making lungs, painting parts of the brain, using a microscope to look at plant and human cells, learning about microorganisms, participating in a simulation activity on how infections are spread, identifying their fingerprint type and extracting DNA from fruit.

Here are some of the learning reflections from the day.

I learnt……….

that the heart has four chambers. Hannah the brain has three parts which include the stem, cerebrum and cerebellum. Amelie there are four types of fingerprints which are the arch, whorl, simple loop and double loops. Chloe that sticking your hand in a lamb’s heart is fun. Atto the study of the heart and its disorders is called cardiology. Alice women have less blood than men. Urvi that graphite makes fingerprints more visible. Luka the four main blood types are A, B, AB and O. Jake that plants have a cell wall that makes them harder than human tissue. Billy that humans have cell membranes. Aiden that blood is pumped out of the pulmonary artery. Isabella

News from the P&C Court Opening Last Thursday was a great morning to officially open our court. Thank you to Ms Russom, Ben Woods and the school captains for their wonderful speeches. It was a fun morning with yummy food thanks to the help and support of P&C executive members, Ms Russom and the teachers on the BBQ and of course the game of newcombe ball with the kids. Such a fun event with so many smiling faces and the laughter & cheers could be heard around the community. Hopefully we can organise something similar in the near future. AGM - Notification Monday 8th August 2016 This year’s AGM is on the 8th August in the school library at 7.30pm. The school benefits significantly from having a functioning P&C. To make this AGM run smoothly we are introducing a nomination form, this also allows people who are not able to make the meeting to still contribute to being part of one of the committees. Please complete the nomination form and email to [email protected] by 3.15pm on Friday 5th August. If you would like to ask any questions about the roles please don’t hesitate to contact the current office bearers, we would love to hear from you. Update on Fees Thank you to everyone who has made their P&C voluntary levy contribution. As you know your contribu-tions will be going towards the playground upgrades scheduled for 2016. Please show your support and consider submitting your donation into the P&C box in the front office, Electronic Funds Transfer or via Schools 24. Father’s Day Stall & Breakfast, Thursday 1st September 2016 Thank you to those who have already volunteered to help with our Father’s Day breakfast & stall. We are still looking for a couple of members of the school community to take on the task to order gifts and coor-dinate the breakfast. Please contact the P&C email if you are able to help. Roles of Officer Bearers of Putney P&C  President The President is responsible for: The successful functioning of the P&C Association meetings

The attainment of the P&C Association’s objectives

Ensuring that the P&C Association takes part in decision-making processes in the school.

Fostering fair participation of all members and ensuring that all new members are made to feel welcome.

Supporting volunteers.

Acting as the P&C Association’s spokesperson when public statements or actions are needed

Setting up lines of communication with the Principal Being signatory on the Association’s bank accounts

Vice President

The Vice President will stand in for the President when required and assist in the general running of the P&C in-cluding being a signatory of the Associations bank accounts.

Secretary

The Secretary is responsible for carrying out the administrative tasks related to the decisions of the meetings as resolved. The Secretary prepares, in consultation with the President, all meeting agendas.

The Secretary is required to attend P&C Association meetings and take notes of the discussions in order to pro-

duce a set of Minutes for subsequent distribution to members and for receipt, possible amendment and adop-tion at the following meeting. The position includes receiving and tabling all correspondence as well as writing and dispatching outgoing correspondence as resolved/appropriate. The Secretary also issues notice of all meetings and maintains official records of the P&C Association such as the constitution, by-laws, rules of sub-committees, Incorporation Certificate, ABN details, list of financial (voting) members, Minutes, Attendance book.

Treasurer & Canteen Treasurer (in conjunction with an External Book-keeper)

Whilst all P&C members must be mindful of complying with financial accountability requirements, this is the Treas-urer’s primary responsibility.

The Treasurers receive and deposit monies, maintain records, draw cheques and present accounts. The Treasur-

ers also ensure that all funds held and handled by P&C are properly and openly accounted for as the Treasur-ers are responsible for all funds held in the name of the P&C Association. This includes all P&C Association committees such as the canteen operations.

This does not mean that the Treasurer must undertake the actual bookkeeping themselves but they must ensure

that the various sub-committee financial records have been kept to the Treasurer’s satisfaction such as an ex-ternal book keeping service. The Treasurer is a signatory on the P&C accounts and should not delegate this responsibility.

The Treasurer should encourage members to understand the state of the P&C Association finances. The Treasur-

er must ensure a case book or books are kept, recording all financial transactions of the P&C Association.

Elected Members The P&C can also have up to six other members who shall be included in all Executive meetings and decision

making required by the P&C Association. Assist in the running of the P&C. This has worked well in 2016 to spread the load of work and enable healthy debates on matters and be able to represent the P&C at all school events.

Working Party/Sub-Committees

Including but not limited to Fundraising, Canteen, Second-Hand Uniforms, Banking, Book Club, Road Safety and Grounds. The P & C may establish subcommittees, however styled, to carry out specific functions on its behalf. Any subcommittees that are established shall report regularly at meetings of the association and follow any directions received from the association. The association may dissolve a subcommittee at any time. Any funds raised or handled by a subcommittee shall be, for all purposes, funds of the association.

Speech Pathology News

Expressive Language

Expressive Language is a term used by Speech Pathologists to refer to a child’s use of words and sentences. There are many components to expressive language development. Sometimes a child does not develop their expressive language skills according to the general expectations of their age. A speech pathologist can complete a lan-guage assessment in order to determine whether or not a child has an expressive language delay. Expressive lan-guage delays can occur with or without receptive language delays. Children with delays in their expressive lan-guage can experience difficulties:

Developing a rich vocabulary to communicate their ideas

Using word level grammatical structures, such as pronouns (he, him, his etc), plurals (cat/cats, foot/feet) and verb tenses (kick/kicked, eat/ate)

Asking questions (who, what, why, where, how, when?)

Using more complex sentence structures that include different clauses (The girl who owns the puppy knocked on the door) and conjunctions (I can’t go swimming because I am sick).

Finding the right words to use while speaking

Retelling stories or giving information in an organised and sequential manner

Using specific language and tend to use filler words, such as ‘thing’ and ‘this’ often

Participating in classroom activities

Engaging in language-based play

Completing written work at school

Children with difficulties in expressive language development aren’t always easy to identify. Some use fewer words than others their age or make grammatical errors when talking. Others can be quite chatty but tend to talk in cir-cles or not get to the point. Some children can become frustrated as they experience difficulties getting their mes-sage across, while others might seem to be reserved, lazy or daydreamers.

Speech therapy can help children develop their expressive language skills so that they can better convey their thoughts, ideas and feelings which can in turn help with behaviour, self-esteem and school work.

If you have any concerns regarding your child’s expressive language and would like to have a chat about how to help them, please email Melissa at [email protected] or call 0414 255 283
