Note:
1.Line1: Time dimension signifying rapidly changing
environment.
2.Line2: Uncertainty showing the complexity of problems.
3.Line3: Problems with low uncertainty, which can be solved
through workflow design & optimization.
4.Line4: With the increasing uncertainties, choices have to
be made when solving problems.
5.Line5: With much more uncertainties, explorations are
needed to find solutions to problems.
6.Line6: When the uncertainties reach an even higher level,
flexibility and sophisticated action are needed.
7.Line7: Trend of development should be considered to
solve complicated problems in a rapidly changing
environment.
In sum, challenges of the new era raise higher demands on
talent training, i.e. if people want to lead the world
development in the future, they have to improve themselves
in the following three aspects:

Part II Challenges Faced by Higher Education in the 21 Century
Higher education is facing
unprecedented challenges at
the beginning of 21st century,
under the impact of
Globalization
Knowledge-based economic
growth
The information and
communication revolution
(Salmi 2002)
Challenges faced by China’s Higher Education
• Elite education to mass education requires universities to
reform and adjust their functions & education philosophy.
• Planned economy to market economy requires universities
to reform and adjust their governance system & resource
allocation system.
• Bureaucratic & mechanistic organizations to knowledge
network organizations requires universities to reform and
adjust their management system & organization structures.
• The spread of knowledge to the implementation of new
university functions requires universities to reform and
adjust their educational model & education process.
• Theoretic education to pragmatic education requires
universities to strengthen their university cultures &
innovation spirit.

• Western culture stresses religion, law and science.
• Eastern culture stresses morality and art.
• XJTLU’s educational model seeks the integration of the two and
aims at the future trends & challenges.

• Affected by individualism, western culture & education treats
students as adults and advocates self-realization, freedom &
democracy.
• Affected by collectivism, eastern culture & education treats students
as kids and emphasizes knowledge feeding.
• XJTLU’s education model seeks a balance between the two and
treats students as young adults. Based on the future talent needs, it
provides students with service, support and guidance.

Part V XJTLU Five-Star Education Model
It indicates the five key elements of XJTLU Five-Star
Education Model.
With Global Citizen as our education goal, great
attention has been paid on philosophy and value
system, capability system and knowledge system by
the university. To help our students with the
developments from the three perspectives, XJTLU
employs comprehensive education strategy and
support systems of implementation.
The five key elements will be illustrated further in the
following slides.

What’s wrong with curriculum?
1.Individual academic discipline
Paul DeHart Hurd: "Biology, chemistry, physics, and earth
science…no longer exist as they are portrayed in the simple
division of school science into subjects.“
2.The traditional general education curriculum
Robert Stevens: "We have lost sight of our responsibility for
synthesizing learning."
3.Relationship between curriculum and its real meaning
John Goodlad: "What students are asked to relate to in
school [is] increasingly artificial, cut off from the human
experiences subject matter is supposed to reflect."
What’s wrong with extracurricular activities
“We must rise above the exclusive association of learning with
book-learning. First-hand knowledge is the ultimate basis of
intellectual life. To a large extent book-learning conveys second-
hand information and as such can never rise to the importance of
immediate practice. Our goal is to see the immediate events of
our lives as instances of general ideas. What the learned world
tends to offer instead is one second-hand scrap of information
illustrating ideas derived from another second-hand scrap of
information. The second-handedness of the learned world is the
secret of its mediocrity.” (Alfred North Whitehead-1916 address to
the Mathematical Association of England)

Being initiative
1. Making active attempts to influence events to achieve
goals.
2. Self-starting rather than passively accepting.
3. Taking action to achieve goals beyond what is
necessarily called for, originating action.
Execution, a general word, and not easy to be defined
clearly, but briefly speaking, it can be referred as the
carrying out of an action, instruction, command, or
movement. And expertise and capabilities with regard to
execution capability usually exists in the following areas of
specialization: 1. strategic planning (objectives)
2. communication capability/interactive spirits
3. environment and natural resource
analysis/management
4. public relationship governance
5. administrative structure and management
6. information technology
7. human and financial resource development

"Innovation . . . is generally understood as the
successful introduction of a new thing or method . . .
Innovation is the embodiment, combination, or
synthesis of knowledge in original, relevant, valued new
products, processes, or services. Luecke and Katz
(2003)
Lifelong learning is the development of human
potential through a continuously supportive process
which stimulates and empowers individuals to acquire
all the knowledge, values, skills, and understanding
they will require throughout their lifetimes and to apply
them with confidence, creativity and enjoyment in all
roles, circumstances, and environments. (Longworth
and Davies, p. 22)

Philosophy (Wisdom) here mainly refers to a deep
understanding and realizing of people, things, events
or situations, resulting in the ability to choose or act to
consistently produce the optimum results with a
minimum of time and energy. It is the ability to
optimally (effectively and efficiently) apply perceptions
and knowledge and so produce the desired results.
Wisdom is also the comprehension of what is true or
right coupled with optimum judgment as to action.
Synonyms include: sagacity, discernment, or insight.
Wisdom often requires control of one's emotional
reactions (the "passions") so that one's principles,
reason and knowledge prevail to determine one's
actions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisdom • Knowledge system refers to an open, dynamic and multilevel
system consisting of different knowledge with certain proportional
and combinational relationships.
