It indicates the five key elements of XJTLU Five-Star

Education Model.

With Global Citizen as our education goal, great

attention has been paid on philosophy and value

system, capability system and knowledge system by

the university. To help our students with the

developments from the three perspectives, XJTLU

employs comprehensive education strategy and

support systems of implementation.

The five key elements will be illustrated further in the

following slides.

What’s wrong with curriculum?

1.Individual academic discipline

Paul DeHart Hurd: "Biology, chemistry, physics, and earth

science…no longer exist as they are portrayed in the simple

division of school science into subjects.“

2.The traditional general education curriculum

Robert Stevens: "We have lost sight of our responsibility for

synthesizing learning."

3.Relationship between curriculum and its real meaning

John Goodlad: "What students are asked to relate to in

school [is] increasingly artificial, cut off from the human

experiences subject matter is supposed to reflect."

What’s wrong with extracurricular activities

“We must rise above the exclusive association of learning with

book-learning. First-hand knowledge is the ultimate basis of

intellectual life. To a large extent book-learning conveys second-

hand information and as such can never rise to the importance of

immediate practice. Our goal is to see the immediate events of

our lives as instances of general ideas. What the learned world

tends to offer instead is one second-hand scrap of information

"Innovation . . . is generally understood as the

successful introduction of a new thing or method . . .

Innovation is the embodiment, combination, or

synthesis of knowledge in original, relevant, valued new

products, processes, or services. Luecke and Katz

(2003)

Lifelong learning is the development of human

potential through a continuously supportive process

which stimulates and empowers individuals to acquire

all the knowledge, values, skills, and understanding

they will require throughout their lifetimes and to apply

them with confidence, creativity and enjoyment in all

roles, circumstances, and environments. (Longworth

Philosophy (Wisdom) here mainly refers to a deep

understanding and realizing of people, things, events

or situations, resulting in the ability to choose or act to

consistently produce the optimum results with a

minimum of time and energy. It is the ability to

optimally (effectively and efficiently) apply perceptions

and knowledge and so produce the desired results.

Wisdom is also the comprehension of what is true or

right coupled with optimum judgment as to action.

Synonyms include: sagacity, discernment, or insight.

Wisdom often requires control of one's emotional

reactions (the "passions") so that one's principles,

reason and knowledge prevail to determine one's

as a general concept comprises knowledge of or

The concept of experience generally refers to

know-how or procedural knowledge, rather than

propositional knowledge: on-the-real world

training rather than book-learning.

natural world, by which to help human beings to solve

various problems in the world.

defined as the entities, both material and immaterial,

• XJTLU has explored its unique Learning and

Teaching Strategy on the basis of integrating the

essences of both western and eastern Higher

Education.

• Extracurricular activities are so important in that we

are convinced that informal and first-hand learning
