    area chart

A chart with vertical and horizontal axes where each point along the horizontal axis

represents a data point. The actual values for each data point are plotted against the

vertical axis. For each series, colored areas are created by connecting the plotted points

agains the horizontal axis. This chart is useful to emphasize a trend line such as stock

prices or revenue history. Similar to stacked area charts.

    art and background component

An element that can be added to a model to enhance the look with images and colors.

    background component

A prebuilt artwork element that can be added to a model to provide a visual background

and create visual divisions or group related components. Unlike container components,

this component does not hold or contain other components: it just creates a visual distinction

    between areas.

    bar chart

A chart that represents data as a horizontal line or bar and shows or compares one or

more items over a period of time or in a specific range of values. For example, this chart

may be used to show the quarterly headcount by region. Similar to column charts and

    stacked bar charts.

    bullet chart

A chart that displays information in a condensed, simple format and can have either a

vertical or a horizontal orientation. The bullet chart has a single primary measure (for

example, current year-to-date revenue) that is displayed as a vertical or horizontal bar. A

marker on the bar indicates the target or performance goal and changingcolorhues behind

the bar indicate qualitative ranges of performance, such as poor, satisfactory, or good.

    calendar component

A connector component that can be added to a model to allow users to select data values.

This component is available in the Other component category.

    canvas

The main work area where users place and manipulate components to create a visualmodel of data.

    canvas container component

A component that can be added to a model to contain other components and create

multilayer models. The canvas component has no art or background and is not visible to

    users at runtime.

more items over a period of time or in a specific range of values. For example, this chart

may be used to show the quarterly headcount by region. Similar to bar charts and stacked

    column charts.

    combination chart

A chart that has both columns and lines to represent information and is often used to

display a range of values and a trend line for those values. For example to examine stocks,

a line series might show the historical stock price throughout the year and a column chartmight show the volume of trading for that stock.

features, such as Dynamic Visibility, can then be applied to the container to affect the

container and all components grouped within the container.

    Crystal Reports Data Consumer connection

A data connection type that allows a model included in a Crystal Report to retrieve

information from Crystal Reports. It also embeds metadata in the Flash (SWF) file that

Crystal Reports uses to bind Crystal Reports data with the Dashboard Design model.data animation

in bar charts the bars gradually increase or decrease in size and, in point-based charts,

the points slide to their new position as the data changes.

    dial component

A single-value component that resembles a dial and represents a variable that can be

modified to affect other components. Users rotate the dial to select the desired value.

marker along a range of values. Similar to a slider component but the dual slider allows

users to adjust both the minimum and maximum value for the variable.

    embedded spreadsheet

The fully functional Excel spreadsheet built into the product and used to store data that

can be linked to components to create models of data.

a datasource, a mapping, a constraint, a domain table or a lookup table.

    composite row

A row that results from a databasejoin operation on at least two datasource tables.

    conditional expression

In a mapping formula, an expression that contains conditions (such as "if ..." and "then...").

    constraint

A test that you define in Data Federator to verify a property of a mapping

    core table

A datasource table that has columns that map to the key of a target table.

    data-access application

A generic term for a database, a plain file, or some other application that lets Data Federator,

    or other applications, access data.

    datasource

A pointer to a source of data; It points to and represents the data that is kept in a

    data-access application.

    datasource catalog

    A collection of datasources.

    domain

The set of permissible values of a column; a domain lets you define permissible values

    more stringently than a type.

    42/48

A table that defines a domain in Data Federator.

    draft datasource

A datasource that you are working on; You can modify a draft datasource, but it is not

available to use in a mapping.fanout

In a relationship between columns, the average number of entries in the second column

that are related to each entry in the first column.

    filter

An expression that limits the data returned.

    final datasource

A datasource that cannot be modified, and that you can use in a mapping.

    functional expression

In a mapping formula, an expression that performs a function on a value.

    key constraint

A constraint that verifies that all the keys in a table are unique.

    lookup table

A table that you create, and whose content you enter, in Data Federator; the lookup table

maps a column of values to another column of values.

    merge join

An operation used in data federation where two large tables of data are sorted before they

are joined, in order to reduce the time it takes to join the tables.

    narrow query

A query used in data federation that returns few results and for which little data transfer is

needed from underlying sources to compute the final result.

    not-null constraint

A constraint that verifies that none of the values in a column are null.

    post-filter

A filter that limits the results of a mapping rule; post-filters operate on data after the table

    relationships.

    pre-filter

A filter that limits the data that comes from datasources; pre-filters operate on data before

    the mapping formulas.

    primary key

A column that is guaranteed to contain unique values, and whose values identify all of the

    rows in a table.

    primary key constraint

A constraint that prescribes that all the values of a column must be unique.

To request a source database to perform some operation (instead of performing the

operation within the data federation engine; performing operations on source databases

is generally more efficient than in the data federation engine).

    sample datasource table data

Data that is used in a constraint check to compare the data that you expect to extract from

the sources to the data that Data Federator extracts from the sources.

    sample target table data

Data that is used in a constraint check to compare the expected results to the actual results.

    semi-join

An operation between two tables that returns the rows of the first table that match at least

one row in the second table. In other words, the first table is filtered with the rows of the

    second table.

    statistics

Numeric information about data stored in sources that are used fordata federation, including

such things as estimated number of entries in a table, estimated number of distinct valuesin a column, or average number of relationships between each value in a column and

    another column.
