Speaking of meetings, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who were able to make it to our parent meetings as well as “Back to School Night” in late August. These meetings serve as an opportunity to begin the very important communication process between you and Xavier High School. Hopefully you learned some valuable information about what we do to guide your students through their academic year. We also hope you felt the sense of community we are continually striving to build. The turnout for these meetings solidifies my belief that one of our most valuable assets is the extent to which Xavier parents are willing to be involved in their students’ education. Our partner- ship with you, your students and our parishes is a winning combination.

For over sixteen years it has been a regular family tradition that my Dad drives all four of my siblings to school every morning. These rides were something that we always enjoyed and looked forward to. Unlike many kids who slept on their way to school as their parents listened to talk radio, we enjoyed this short ride because Dad always made it fun. Whether it was blasting his Hits of the 70s cassettes and singing “Play That Funky Music White Boy” in unison,or having a mock fire drill at a neighbor-hood stoplight, Dad always tried to make

this short time in the car as fun as possible. It was also during this time that my Dad

would give us some of his famous “before school pep-speeches.” He would tell each

of us the importance of working hard and giving it our all each day. What others chose to do did not matter in my father’s eyes. Dad always told us that if you want to make a positive change, do not sit and wait for oth-ers approval but instead “buckledown and do it.” Being typical kids we would often respond by telling Dad that making positive decisions is not always easy. We would often try to make excuses by telling him what other kids were doing. He would then tell me that he doesn’t care what other students do, but as he would always say “I

Dad always told us that if you want to make a positive change, do not sit and wait for others approval but instead “buckle down and do it.”

It’s hard to believe that by the time you read this issue of the Navigator, we will have nearly a month of school under our belts! Our halls are filled with energy and the “Xavier Spirit” can be felt throughout the campus. Our new staff members have joined with our experienced faculty to offer our students the faith-based, high level academic education to which our students and their parents have become accustomed.

The beginning of the year tends to be the busiest and it’s im-portant that all of us keep an eye on the calendar. Activities, meetings and information sessions tend to be heavy at this time of year. The Xavier calendar is available on the web this year and is updated daily.

Speaking of meetings, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who were able to make it to our parent meetings as well as “Back to School Night” in late August. Hopefully you learned some valuable information about what we do to guide your students through their academic year. We also hope you felt the sense of community we are continually striving to build. Principal‘s Corner (continued from page 1)

The fall, of course, is full of opportunities to watch our Saints perform on the field, on the stage, in the gym, as well as on running courses and golf courses. I invite all of you to take time, in addition to at-tending activities your student may be involved in, to also attend an activity that your student is not involved in. Whether it is a game, a play, a concert, a meet, or a half-time performance, I think you’ll be impressed by the talent level displayed by our Xavier students. They have truly worked hard to develop the gifts God has blessed them with.

As I write this Navigator piece, we are already preparing for our annual Home-coming celebration. This year’s festivities begin with our Homecoming Mass on Wednesday, October 3 at 9:50 a.m. We will welcome Fr. John Flaherty, pastor at All Saints, to celebrate that Mass. On

Thursday, October 4 the Xavier commu-nity will gather in the Ron Thillen Gym for our Homecoming Pep Assembly and Coronation at 7:30 p.m. On Friday, the Xavier Saints will host Waterloo West in an MVC Homecoming contest. The week will conclude with the Homecoming Dance (a lock-in) on Saturday from 8-11 p.m.

As the excitement of the early school year begins to subside and the reality of “routine” sets in, I ask that you continue to partner with us in helping make 2012-13 Xavier’s best ever! Visit with your stu-dents often about our guiding words: Ac-ceptance, Belief, Community, Inspiration and Integrity.

Above all, let’s commit ourselves to this year’s challenging theme: “Like Mary…we say YES to the impossible!”

Iowa Assessments Tests Scheduled

All freshman, sophomore, and junior students will be taking the Iowa Assessments (previously known as I.T.E.D.). These tests are used to measure individual growth in many academic areas. They also help the school analyze its curriculum based upon class growth from year to year. It is very important for students to do their absolute best on these tests.

The tests will be administered from 8:00-9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, September 25, Wednes-day, September 26, and Thursday, September 26. Seniors report at 9:50 a.m. on each of these three days.

NCAA-Clearinghouse Any student who intends to play sports at a Division I or Division II college or university needs to complete a registration form through the NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE (www.ncaaclearinghouse.net). Talk to one of the counselors if you have any questions.

Golden Circle College Fair, Iowa Events Center - Hy-Vee Hall, Des Moines Sunday, September 30, 2012. 12:30 p.m. - 3 p.m. Visit 150 colleges in one day. Please plan to attend the Golden Circle College Fair in Des Moines on September 30. The Golden Circle Col-lege Fair is traditionally the largest in Iowa. Last year, 150 colleges and universities exhibited to more than 2,000 students and family members. Take advantage of this opportunity to speak one-on-one with school representatives from across the country. New this year: Iowa college fairs, including the Golden Circle College Fair, will be implementing a College Fair automation barcode and scanner system this year. Students can register online and receive a person-alized barcode to print and bring to the college fair. When a student visits the booth of a college he or she is interested in, they can have the college scan the barcode rather than filling out the information forms at the table.

Iowa Assessments will be given to 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students on September 25, 26, 27. We would ask that you try not to schedule any outside appointments during test dates. Seniors are to report to school at 9:50 a.m. on test days.

Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Test (PSAT/NMSQT) will be held at Xavier High School on Wednesday, October 17, 8:00 - Noon. Juniors participate in this testing opportunity to prepare for SAT college entrance exams and to compete in the National Merit Scholarship Competi-tion. Sophomores may take the PSAT for practice only. SAT practice tests are also available in the guidance office. Any junior with a B+ average or better should seriously consider taking advantage of this opportunity. All, however, are eligible to take PSAT/NMSQT by regis-tering in the guidance office and paying a fee of $15. An additional fee will be charged for late registration.

ACT: OCTOBER 27 - Seniors who have not yet taken the ACT for college entrance should consider the October, December or Febru-ary test dates to be eligible for scholarships. September 21 is the deadline for the October test date. For an additional fee the late registration deadline is October 5. Juniors usually take the ACT test in April or June. ACT testing is offered five times each year and may be taken as often as desired. Registration information and practice tests are available in the guidance office. Students can register via the internet at www.actstudent.org

Cognitive Ability Test (IQ): October 24 - will be administered to all freshman as an IQ update for added information to be used in educational and vocational planning and placement. Results are discussed individually with students and/or parents in conjunction with other school data upon request.

Plan Testing : October 31 - available to sophomores. This test gives an early indication of readiness for the ACT Assessment and will provide students, their parents, and counselors with compre-hensive detailed information they need to build solid educational and career plans. PLAN includes a study skill assessment, interest in-ventory, and a section for student-reported needs, plans and goals. Cost is $15. An additional fee will be charged for late registration.

Seniors Needing SAT Scores for early decision programs at Eastern schools or other Ivy League schools may need to register for one of the following test dates: October 6, November 3, or Decem-ber 1. In addition to the SAT, some schools also require SAT Subject tests. Contact colleges for deadlines. Registration material is avail-able in the guidance office or via internet at www.collegeboard.com

A School Psychologist, Social Worker, Vocational Reha-bilitation Counselor, and Speech and Hearing Clinician are available to Xavier through GWAEA. If you think your student can benefit from one of these services please contact the guidance office.

Academic Scholarships: Students who qualify for academic scholarships should apply as early as possible to the college of their choice. To be eligible for most academic scholarships a student must apply to the college. The deadlines for Presidential Scholar-ships and other academic scholarships may be as early as October 1. See one of the counselors for further information.

Selective Service – Federal law requires that all men register with Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. Now, 17 year-old men can submit their registration information early on the internet (www.sss.gov), or by filling out a form at any post office. Selective Service registration is required to be eligible for a federal student loan, job training, most federal jobs, and U.S. citizenship.

For questions regarding the programs/services listed above or other Guidance related questions, contact Dave Schemmel, or Joy St. An-drews at (319) 294-6635.

Parenting teenagers is one of the most difficult jobs in the world. We as parents want our children to be the best they can be at everything they do. We want them to excel in the classroom, on the field, on the stage and through service. We go through all of their emotional ups and downs with them; we laugh when they laugh, cry when they cry, hurt when they hurt, and get angry when they get angry or upset. We try to protect them from those things that might impact their life in a negative way. Sometimes we try to protect them from an experience that may hurt them now, but if we let had let them go through it may have helped them become a better person in the long run.

In an article called “What’s More Important: GPA or Character?” written by Jim Fay, the co-founder of the Love and Logic Institute in Golden, Colorado, when asked if we are more interested in our child’s grade point average or his or her character and responsi-bility, he gives those of us who answered character and responsibility a pat on the back. He says, “Children who grow up where character and responsibility are modeled, valued, and enforced often have little trouble being successful in school and in their adult lives.” He recommends that we as parents need to treat our teenager’s mistakes as an opportunity for them to learn how to face the consequences of their choices. No matter how hard it is for us and for our child in the short-term, “the long term benefits will be a stronger, healthier sense of personal responsibility, the foun-dation of a solid character.” Sometimes, “our attempts to save children from the conse-quences of their mistake have a great deal to do with comforting ourselves, instead of solving the problem.”

Fay offers a couple of examples for how we might handle a situation we find ourselves in when our child gets caught after making a poor decision. In the first example the parent shows empathy by explaining to her teenage daughter that she is sure her daughter is sorry and must feel awful for doing what she did. Then she offers to go with her daughter to the police station to be with her for support while she explains what she did wrong. In another example the parents says to the child, “I love you too much to let you pass up this opportunity to learn about how the real world works.” The Love and Logic philosophy gives us a great solution when we find ourselves in a situation like this. “There is a way of holding kids responsible for their actions without appearing mean or authoritarian. This wonderful technique leaves kids thinking, my parent is not the prob-lem. My problem is my bad decision.”

Anytime a parent has to step in and make sure their child faces up to a consequence he or she knows will really be hard for the child to face, it usually ends up being harder on the parent. Having a child own up to the choice they made and consequence that fol-lows will be most helpful to the child in the long run. It isn’t the mistake that should de-fine someone or be what others remember about that person, it is what they do about it. Accepting the consequence, recovering gracefully and holding their head up high and moving on helps teach responsibility and definitely builds character. Next time your child does something that could affect a grade, whether they get to participate in their favorite sport, or even whether they end up in trouble with the police, it’s character that counts!

Jim Fay is the co-founder of the Love and Logic Institute in Golden, Colorado, and co-authors of the best-selling book, Parenting With Love and Logic. For more information about Love and logic parent-ing and teaching techniques, call 1-800-LUV-LOGIC, or visit www.loveandlogic.com.

Campus Ministry Update

Fr. Vu led us in celebration at our Feast of the Assumption and chal-lenged students, faculty and parents to live out our theme for the year, “Like Mary…we say YES to the impossible”. He said that in say-ing YES to the impossible how can we say NO to the difficult. We will be holding three Kairos retreats for Juniors this year. Kairos is a four day long retreat. The dates are as follows:K-13 – October 25-28, 2012K-14 – January 24-27, 2013 (note: some communication had incor-rect date)K-15 – April 18-21, 2013

The retreats fill quickly; K-13 has only 3 spots left. The retreat has been a very positive experience for students who have attended it in the past. Please encourage your student to sign up today!

TEC retreat for Seniors will be held here at Xavier November 17-19. This is a three day long retreat. It is a great chance for seniors to take time out from their busy schedules to reflect on their faith as they be-gin to prepare for the next phase of their lives. This year the Spiritual director for the XHS TEC will be Fr. Vu, so it is sure to be a wonderful weekend. For other TEC dates and online registration, please visit http://www.arch.pvt.k12.ia.us/YAC/YouthEvangelization/TEC.html

International speaker and author John Pridmore will be speaking at Xavier High School on September 24th at 10 a.m.. Mr. Pridmore was a London gangster who thought he had it all, yet he felt a great void in his life. Hear him reveal the pivotal moment which changed his life! He will speak on subjects that really matter, like why forgive-ness can heal our wounded hearts, how to trust more fully in Christ and how our little works of mercy have the power to transform the lives of others. It is sure to be an inspiring morning. If you are unable to join us as Xavier in the morning you can attend a speaking event at St. Pius X at 6:30 in the evening of the 24th. You can find more information about John Pridmore at http://gangland-to-promised-land.blogspot.com/

A regional Catholic Conference, Christ Our Life, will be held in Des Moines on September 22 and 23rd. We will be providing transporta-tion on Saturday, leaving Xavier at 6:30 a.m. and returning around midnight. If you are interested in a ride, stop by Campus Ministry or send an e-mail to [email protected]. You may attend all or part of the conference. Saturday evening concludes with a concert by Steve Angrisano. More information about the conference and the speakers is available at http://www.christourlifeiowa.com/.

There are many opportunities for your student to become involved in Campus Ministry this year. Please encourage your son or daugh-ter to sign up for Liturgy Committee, Liturgy Singers and Musicians, Lifesavers (pro-life group) or to help with planning our Mission trip or work on the Freshman or Sophomore retreats as a group leader. Our Freshman retreat will be held on September 7 with a focus on how we are all work of the Father’s Hands.

Pope Benedict proclaims this the Year of Faith is a “summons to an authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord, the One Savior of the world” (Porta Fidei 6). In other words, the Year of Faith is an opportu-nity for Catholics to experience a conversion – to turn back to Jesus and enter into a deeper relationship with him. The “door of faith” is opened at one’s baptism, but during this year Catholics are called to open it again, walk through it and rediscover and renew their rela-tionship with Christ and his Church.

Upcoming dates:September 7: Freshman retreatSeptember 22-23: Christ Our Life Conference Des MoinesSeptember 24: John Pridmore 10 a.m.October 3: Homecoming MassOctober 8-12: Respect Life Week

We begin the school year full of hope for another year and all the blessings, challenges and opportunities that it brings.

Make weekend Mass a family priority. The US Conference of Bishops

researched young adults asking what kept them involved in church

life. Most said it was because they are involved in liturgy. A good way

to be involved with liturgy is to attend Mass as a family and be involved

in your parish community. Keep your faith alive and be nourished by

the Eucharist at Mass each Sunday.

Lifesavers

The XHS Lifesavers group focuses on defend-

ing the basic rights of those who are weakest

and most marginalized: the poor, the home-

less, the innocent unborn, and the frail and

elderly who need our respect and our assis-

tance. Through educational events, charitable

efforts, times of prayer, and opportunities for

public witness, they bring attention to this

important issue. Such initiatives are integral

to supporting the Church’s ongoing effort to

help build a culture in which every human life

without exception is respected and defended.

Lifesavers activities 2012/2013:

Respect Life Week: October 8-12, 2012.

Activities include:

• 400 white crosses representing the 4,000 lives lost each day to abortion in the US

• Baby Shower for Birthright and Aid to Women

• Dress in Black Day as a witness to the lack of respect for life in today’s culture

• March for Life in Washington DC from Janu-ary 23 through January 27, 2013 Parents Prayer Group

Parent Prayer Group

All Xavier parents are invited to meetings of

the Xavier Parent Prayer Group, which meets

every Saturday morning at 7:30 in the Xavier

Chapel. For simplicity, a rosary is said specifi-

cally for the intentions of the Xavier faculty,

staff and students. Meetings are typically over

Xavier Foundation Parish Appeal 2012

St Matthew the Evangelist Feast day: September 21st

St. Matthew the Evangelist told the world of the life and teachings of Jesus. He wrote his Gospel during the second half of the first century while living in Jerusalem. When Jesus asked St. Matthew to follow Him, he did so immediately and his life was never the same. Jesus is calling us to follow Him too! When we give our lives over to Jesus, our lives are never the same.

What can we learn from the life of St. Matthew the Evangelist?

1. Words are powerful, so be careful what you text and email!2. We all need to make changes in our lives, so consider attending the Christ Our Life Conference for spiritual renewal.3. Take the opportunity to share with family and friends what they mean to you and how they have enriched your life.

Prayer:

O Glorious Saint Matthew, in your Gospel you portrayed Jesus as the longed for Mes-siah who fulfilled the Prophets of the Old Covenant and as the new Lawgiver who foun-ded a Church of the New Covenant. Each sports season the game officials in the MVC rate the players, coaches and fans on their sportsmanship during every conference game. Xavier won the Cliff Brees MVC “Valley” Division Sportsman-ship Award for the 2012 Spring & Summer seasons. This includes the sports of Girls Soccer, Boys Soccer, Softball & Baseball.

The scale the officials use is a rating of 1 for the best score with a ra-ting of 5 being the worst score. Below is a breakdown of the Xavier officials’ ratings for the spring/summer seasons:

Girls Soccer:

Coaches Players Fans Composite

1.00 1.18 1.36 1.18

Boys Soccer:

Coaches Players Fans Composite

1.40 1.30 1.20 1.30

Softball:

Coaches Players Fans Composite

1.00 1.00 1.00 1.00

Baseball:

Xavier’s total composite score was 1.165. Coach Graham and the Girls Soccer coaching staff earned a perfect score of 1.0 and the Softball program earned perfect scores across the board!

We have a great tradition of sportsmanship at Xavier and we encourage everyone in the Xavier community to help make all of our athletic events special. We would like the atmos-phere at all games to be a positive one for our athletes including our opponent’s players, coaches & fans. Have a great year supporting the Saints and let’s win another sportsman-ship trophy this fall!

Activities Update

A Long Tradition of Sportsmanship

The Xavier Drama Department is proud to announce its first produc-tion of the year, “The Odd Couple.“ This classic comedy opens as a group of the guys assembled for cards in the apartment of divorced Oscar Madison. And if the mess is any indication, it‘s no wonder that his wife left him. Late to arrive is Felix Unger who has just been separated from his wife. Fastidi-ous, depressed and none too tense, Felix seems suicidal, but as the action unfolds Oscar becomes the one with murder on his mind when the clean-freak and the slob ultimately decide to room together with hilarious results as The Odd Couple is born. The performances will be held Sep-tember 6-8 at 7:00 p.m. in the Regis LaSalle Theatre on the Xavier High School Campus. Tickets: Adults $6.00; Students: $4.00; Senior Citizens: $2.00. Tickets can be purchased at the Xavier High School Activities Office or at the door the nights of the production.

1. Be in proper physical condition to play that specific sport. You should adequately train before the sport! Don’t expect the sport itself to get you in shape.

2. Know and abide by the rules of the sport.Rules of conduct, including illegal blocks and tackles are enforced to keep athletes healthy. Know them. Follow them.

3. Wear appropriate gear and equipment.Make sure your equipment fits properly and you wear braces and supports if necessary.

4. Rest. While many athletes think the more they train, the better they’ll play, this is a misconception. Rest is a critical component of proper training. Rest can make you stronger and prevent injuries of overuse, fatigue and poor judgment.

5. Always warm up before playing.Warm muscles are less susceptible to injuries. The proper warm up is essential for injury prevention. Make sure your warm up suits your sport. You may simply start your sport slowly, or practice spe-cific stretching or mental rehearsal depending upon your activity.

6. Avoid playing if ill or in pain.If your body is fatigued from an illness it does not perform at maximum level and this could be a setup for injury. Pain indicates a problem. You need to pay attention to warning signs your body provides.

Injuries happen, but there are a few tips in order to decrease your chances of having an injury.

Health Services News

Many of the students who visit the Health Promotion Center know that I will ask them the question, “Did you eat breakfast?” when they come in complaining of a headache, stomach ache, or feeling weak in the morning.

According to the American Dietetic Association, children who eat breakfast perform better in school through increased problem-solving ability, memory, verbal fluency, and creativity. Research indicates that skipping breakfast influences metabolic chang-es that occur when an overnight fast continues and a significant amount of nutrients are absent from a student’s overall daily nutrition. As described by registered dieti-cian, Sandra Baxter, R.D., in Bryan, Texas, “we wouldn’t attempt to drive a car for long distances when the fuel gauge reads empty, so why should we expect children to be at peak performance without fueling their bodies.”

I frequently see students who are not eating breakfast. Most of them say that they don’t eat because they do not have time or they are not hungry that early in the morning. I remind them that breakfast does not have to be a sit down breakfast consisting of bacon, eggs, and toast. I stress the importance of breakfast to them and try to get the kids to pick three different food groups for breakfast that are on-the-go foods such as a whole grain bagel or toast with peanut butter and 100% fruit juice or granola bar, banana, and carton of skim milk. On an average 200 students take advantage of the breakfast program offered at Xavier High School. For those students who are not hungry in the early hours of the morning or were running late, this is a great opportu-nity for them to get the nutrition they need.

Parents Are Called to Say Yes to the Difficult (continued from page 1)

care about Nick Satterlee. “

Although this response drove me crazy as a high-schooler, in retrospect I now see the point my father was try-ing to make. He was calling me to be a better person. Although at times my father’s challenges felt difficult and at times impossible, the support my Dad gave me led me to live the gospel message the best I could. It was his witness and encouragement that guided me to attempt to live virtuously and make decisions that were not always seen as popular.

My father was modeling the essence of Catholic love. Our heavenly father loves each of us as individuals, he does not care about the pressures of the secularized world, but rather about you and your children’s souls.

God realizes that the right things to say, do, or model are not always convenient or easy for us. It is not always convenient to take your chil-dren to Mass on Sunday with three club meetings, two sporting events, and a mix of hundreds of other parenting tasks. God understands that being modeling virtues is not an easy thing. But then again how many things that are worth having in life are easy in the first place?

Mr. Nick Satterlee joined the Xavier High School community in August. Nick joins Mrs. Esker in Campus Ministry and also teaches Theology. Mr. Satterlee earned his B.A. from Loras College. He was an active member of the Loras Spiritual Life program, serving as its Service coordinator. Mr. Satterlee was also accepted into the “Breitbach Catholic Thinkers and Leaders Program” at Loras.

As a Xavier community, we are in debt to those who are courageous enough to discern this calling. But let’s remember that they also need us! An explanation on the display reads as follows:

Please pray for those you see here. Offer prayers of thanksgiving for their courage, and prayers of support for their discernment and life’s work. Consider sending letters and words of support to others in your parish and community who have chosen a religious vocation.

Lastly, consider where God is calling you in life. None of us are strong enough, wise enough, or virtuous enough to accept the call to holiness that has been put before us. With God, however, all things are possible. Please do remember all of these individuals, as well as those priests, nuns and religious who have already said yes to God. They still need us.

• Mark Murphy (R98) obtained a degree in chemical engineering from Iowa State in 2002, and served in the U.S. Navy for five years. In the fall of 2008, Mark entered St. Pius X Seminary at Loras College and graduated in 2010. Mark is currently in his third year of theol-ogy studies at the Pontifical North American College in Rome, Italy.

• Sister Louis Marie Zogg (05) joined the Dominican Sisters of Mary Mother of the Eucharist in Ann Arbor, Michigan in the fall of 2007 following two years at Notre Dame. She took her first religious vows in August of 2010, and is scheduled to take her final vows in

2015. The Sisters are an order of teachers, so Sr. Louis Marie is taking classes at Eastern Michigan College in Ann Arbor to complete her degree in biology and secondary education.

• Aaron Junge (08) spent a year in formation with the Redemp-torists at St. John’s University in New York City, and then returned to the Archdiocese of Dubuque to study at Loras College and St. Pius X Seminary. He graduated from Loras in 2012, and begins study at Mundelein Seminary this fall in Mundelein, IL.

• Dennis Conway (09) spent a year at Marquette University in Milwaukee, then also returned to the Archdiocese of Dubuque and St. Pius X Seminary. He graduated from Loras College in 2012. He is currently serving a pastoral year in Marshalltown, Iowa, prior to entering theological seminary.

• Jacob Rouse (09) attended Kirkwood and UNI before enter-ing St. Pius X Seminary and Loras College in the fall of 2011 to discern for the priesthood. He is currently in his second year of study at Loras, and is also serving in the 34th Army National Guard Band.

• Kathleen Glady taught in the Math Department at Xavier dur-ing the 2011-12 school year. During the year, after many years of personal discernment, she made the decision to enter the Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma, MI, on August 1, 2012.

As the school year gets into full swing, it’s time to remind ourselves of another group of students who are especially important to the Xavier community, those graduates who are actively discerning a religious vocation. They are featured on the Religious Vocations Display at Xavier. The display is centered on the following verse from Scripture: Isaiah 6:8: Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?“ “Here I am,“ I said; “Send me!“

An Anniversary Reflection from Superintendent Henderson

Students and Faculty of the Month

It is almost impossible to believe that it has been 15 years since Xavier High School opened its doors to students for the first time. It is almost impossible to believe that in just 15 years Xavier has become, what it has become – an incredibly strong Catholic school living its mission each day, to develop a total person in a Catholic environment.

The school continues to grow and evolve each and every day. It does this because it has strong leadership from pas-tors, board members, administration, faculty, staff, students, parents and parishioners. It demonstrates this strength through the commitment to being first and foremost Catholic. It demonstrates this strength by all who work to make sure the love of Christ shines in all. It demonstrates this

strength through academic success no matter the measure used. It demonstrates this strength through the success of its alumni. It demonstrates this strength by helping students each and every day, in each and every way to become more than they thought they could be.

There is still much work to do for all of us in the next 15 years to keep Xavier moving forward. We must never rest on the conside-rable achievements the school has earned in the first 15 years. Complacency is not in our DNA as Saints.

So my prayer for the school community now is the same as it was 15 years ago when the school opened. “My prayer for all of us is that we’ll live out our destiny to build a community in which excellence will be celebrated and most importantly, the love of Jesus will be exhibited in all we do.”

Happy Birthday Xavier!
