tended meetings, posed questionsand offered feedback. They have alsobeen supportive of the need to sustainthe program through our technologyfee. Abundantly Blessed, Humbly We ServeSubmitted By: Mrs. Sue May

he theme created by the Campus Ministry team for this schoolear, Abundantly blessed, humbly we serve, describes how Iry to live my life. I am abundantly blessed in many ways andhumbly strive to serve Christ and his Church. The essence ofur theme is found in Proverbs 11:25, The one who blessesthers is abundantly blessed as well as Matthew 23:11, Thereatest among you will be the one who serves the rest. Thesecriptures point out that an attitude of gratitude leads to an at-tude of service. When we have an attitude of gratitude andcknowledge that everything we have is a gift from God, it leadso a desire to give back to God through service for his abundantlessings. Being a servant for the kingdom in this way showspoverty of spirit and a humble dedication to the mission of

    Christ.

ervice should ow out of our Baptismal call. As a member ofhe Xavier faculty for the past 7 years, I have had many opportu-ities to serve through my work in Theology and Campus Minis-ry. These experiences include being on the adult team for the

Kairos retreats, directing the Liturgy Singers for All-School Mass-s, being on the Xavier summer mission team through Catholic

Heart Workcamp, and chaperoning the annual March for Life pil-rimage to Washington, D.C. As a classroom teacher I can dem-nstrate to my students how Christs humble attitude of servingthers must be our attitude as well. Students can witness howur desire to serve ows from the abundance of Christs gifts tos. We love because He rst loved us (1 John 4:19).

As a member of St. Pius X Church since moving to Cedar Rapids

in 1985, I have had additional opportunities for service witfamily. With my husband Tony and our children, Aaron (X08Marita (X10), we served our parish by sharing our gift of mat Sunday liturgies and were part of a mission team organby St. Pius X Church in 2008 to Nuevo Progresso, Mexico. ing this mission trip we built houses for four needy familieOur Lady of Sorrow Catholic Church and organized a sumBible School for the children of the parish. Presently I sera musician for Sunday liturgies, direct the High School YChoir, and am a Eucharistic Minister. This past year I facilitaConrmation small group and served as a member of the Formation Commission. All of these opportunities of huservice have blessed my life, enriched my faith, and drawncloser to Christ.

The patron saint of Xavier High School is a model of servicus. St. Francis Xavier is considered one of the greatest misaries in Christian history, conducting his lifes work with gvitality and zeal while always keeping the love of Christ acenter of his ministry. The following quote of St. Francis Xis an inspiration in living out the Gospel message: It is no

actual physical exertion that counts towards ones progressthe nature of the task, but by the spirit of faith with whichundertaken.

Let us strive this school year to foster an attitude of gratitudcause we are abundantly blessed. May we, like St. Francis er, humbly serve others and through this service, bring Chra broken world.

Let us strive this school year to foster an attitude of gratitude because

    we are abundantly blessed.

    Feast of the Assumption

    Thursday August 15th

What is the Feast of the Assumption? The Catechism of the CatholicChurch explains, The Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stainof original sin, when the course of her earthly life nished, was taken upbody and soul into heavenly glory and exalted by the Lord as Queen ovall things.

Why is this feast so important? The Assumption completes Gods work iMary since it was not tting that the esh that had given life to God Himself should ever undergo decay. The Assumption is Gods crowning of Hwork as Mary ends her earthly life and enters eternity. This is an importaof Marian feast as well as being a holy day of obligation. On this day, wereect upon our lives and our hope that we too will spend our eternitywith Mary in heaven. There are many distractions in the world to divert our attention from thisheavenly goal. Mark 8:36 reminds us For what does it prot a man to

gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? Wealth and power will not gayou entrance into Gods kingdom. Saying yes to His will for your life, aMary and Jesus lovingly did, are our examples of success. Saint Augustin

shares this golden nugget of truth, Our hearts are restless until they rest in thee. If you want peace in this life, seek outGod in prayer. He alone is the source of peace, both in this world and the next. Mary Queen of Peace, please pray for us!

    Join the Xavier

Xavier High School is once again sponsoring the (formerly called Silver Club).

    For $175, your membership includes:

By enrolling in you will receive four punch cards for admission to Xavier activities. This is a change from last year when five punch cards were issued. Feedback from families

indicated that four punch cards would be adequate for each family. These punch cards (20

punches per card) can be used for up to 80 admissions (potential $400 value) to Xavier

regular season home athletic and fine arts events. The card will be punched for each person

who attends the event. The punch card can be used to admit the card holder and anyone

attending with the card holder (family, college students, friends, grandparents, etc.) to the

event. The punch card will NOT be allowed for reserved seating sales for fine arts events.

The punch cards will be allowed for admission to fine art events 30 minutes prior to

performance time. This change is being made due to a significant financial loss to our fine

arts programs last year resulting from use of the Silver Saints cards.

When the punch cards are used up, members may purchase additional cards (20punches) for $80 ($100 value) through the Activities Office.
