Congratula�ons to our three swimmers, Ella,

Shakira and Nate who travelled to Pi�sworth to

compete at the Inner Downs swimming

carnival. All swimmers represented our school

with pride and competed to a high standard.

Best of luck to Nate who qualified for 5 events

and will travel to Ga�on in March to compete

at the DD swimming Trials.

Goals for 2019

⇒ 80-85% of students achieve above benchmark in reading through the development and

alignment of reading framework.

⇒ Develop processes to support teachers to regularly analyse, discuss and use data to improve

student achievement and inform curriculum and teaching prac%ce.

⇒ Ensure greater engagement and communica%on is provided to community.

The weeks are already flying by. Last Thursday night, we had our

Parent Meet and Greet BBQ. Thank you to the staff and the

P and C for their efforts in organising such a lovely evening. We

had fewer numbers than expected but it was a lovely a2ernoon

and evening to chat to staff and parents. The touch game was the

highlight for me. The children all joined in and we had some

fabulous parents join in for a run up the field. The P and C have a

fantas%c raffle this term with a motor bike, electric scooter, trailer

and an outdoor heater as the prize. Tickets went home last week.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S PEN…

Read read read!!! Our Guided Reading groups are now in full swing and it is a great %me to discuss the importance of reading

with your child every night. One of my favourite authors is Mem Fox. Below are her top 10 %ps for parents around reading:

1. Read every day – spend 10 minutes a day reading aloud every single day.

2. Read three books a day – it could be the same book three %mes.

3. Read with excitement – Read with anima%on!

4. Read with enjoyment – read with joy and for enjoyment.

5. Read over and over again- read the stories your children love over and over again.

6. Talk, sing, bounce- let children hear lots of language. Talk to them constantly, sing and say

nursery rhymes.

7. Look for rhythm- look for short books with rhyme, rhythm and repe%%on for young

children.

8. Read and play- play games with things you see on the page eg. Let kids finish the rhyme or

find the leAers of their name.

9. Read for fun- never teach reading or get tense around books.

10. Read because you love it- read because you love being with your child, not because it’s the right thing to do.

PBL- Posi%ve Behaviour for Learning – I am a responsible learner, I am respec�ul and I am safe.

This week, we had our first PBL mee%ng for 2019. We will allocate roles and responsibili%es and keep

you informed. Our focus this week is the rou%ne of Ea%ng Areas. Students will learn and prac%ce the

following rou%ne:

Sit in the ea%ng area

Eat your own food

Put rubbish in the bin

Stop and listen to the adult when the whistle blows

Wait to be dismissed

Put lunch box in the correct area

Line up quietly

ID AAend

Our aAendance is currently siGng at 97.6%. We would like our aAendance to be above 98%.

Our best day for aAendance is a Wednesday. Classes now record aAendance on their door and students colour in their graph

each morning. Over the coming weeks, parents will receive a text message when their child is absent from school. This is

through the ID ATTEND program that we have installed. Parents are to respond to this text or we will then phone you. With

ID ATTEND, we will be able to send out text messages to parents to alert you of any messages we may have.

Professional Development

Over the last week and the next few weeks, I will be out comple%ng professional development and the 2019 Principal’s

conference. Last week, our curriculum team aAended a professional development day with Dr Lyn SharraA. Over the

weekend, our lower primary teachers, Miss Hounslow and I aAended a day learning more about SSP for our Prep and Year 1

students. It has been a wonderful %me to look at school improvement and we look forward to sharing with staff in coming

weeks.

Parents Code of Conduct

The Department of Educa%on has a strict policy on conduct of parents in schools. Parents are requested to discuss any

concerns and issues with the class teacher or the Principal. It is important to remember that making an appointment through

the school office is the best way to make contact. Social media is not the avenue to discuss concerns about an issue at

school. The school will take any social media seriously and will report any concerns to police, if deemed necessary. We are

so very proud of our school and appreciate parents who discuss issues of concern with us in the appropriate manner. Please

Pick up and Drop Off

Once again, staff have no%ced students becoming increasingly dangerous near the road at pick up %me. Please ensure you

pick your child up from the classroom or the front gate at the school. Students should not be entering or leaving the school

grounds from the back or side of the school.

Some schools offer the safety of parking on school grounds. However, these parks can fill up quickly. If you choose to park on

the roads or streets around your children’s school:

• say goodbye to your children on the school side of the road—never get them to cross the road to their school’s

entrance alone

• walk across the road and meet your children a2er school (never call out to them from the other side)

• try to leave home early to avoid arriving at the busiest %mes

• follow the direc%ons of all signs

• park a safe distance from all crossings

• always single park (double parking causes accidents and traffic jams)

• try parking a few streets away from the school and walking with your children

Warrior Day is set for the last day of Term 1. It will be the 5th of April and we cannot wait!!!! This term, we are hos%ng

different clubs for the day and the students who are invited to Warrior Day can choose their favourite ac%vity to do on the

day. Students are invited to Warrior Day for demonstra%ng posi%ve behaviours for the term. Students who receive a major

referral will spend %me comple%ng social ac%vi%es around our Wyreema Warrior expecta%ons. Stay tuned in the next edi%on

to find out about the fabulous ac%vi%es on offer.

Cross Country Club

Thank you to all the amazing runners who have been turning up for Cross Country Club last week.

It’s not too late to join if your child is keen.

A permission form can be obtained from the office.

Just a reminder that Cross Country Club is Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning

from 8.15 - 8.45am. Its a great idea to bring a hat and a filled water

bo�le to each session.

News from the Prep classroom. Our Preppies have had a wonderful start to the school year. They are already settling into their new routines and developing their independence. They have been introduced to the SSP (Speech, Sound, Pics) approach to teaching reading, writing and spelling. We have had fun learning the different Monsters for each sound and performing their movements each day. The students are learning to Monster Map (using pictures of the monsters) and Code Map words (using the corresponding ‘letters’, called sound pics) made from the sounds, s, a, t, p, i, n. Each Wednesday, the Preps have participated in a range of activities at Playgroup. They have enjoyed tackling the obstacle course, playing games, listening to stories, creating works of art and craft, using playdough and riding our bikes and scooters. Check out our Facebook page each week for photos of the Preppies having a great time at Playgroup.

Term 1, Week 2: Back Row: In Grade 5/6: Kevin has been an active participant, contributing creative ideas and thoughts.. In Grade 2/3: Alexis has completed all learning tasks and helped her classmates. In Grade 3/4: Tiana has proven to be a responsible learner by giving all tasks a go. Front Row: In Prep: Azalea has been using the SSP Monsters to make words. She is beginning to duck hand words independently. In Prep/1: Felicity represented the Prep/1 class when they received their PE award for the week. In Prep/1: Mason has been focused on all tasks. In Grade1/2: Kasari uses the reading strategy Chunking to attack big words.

Term 1, Week 3: In Grade 3/4: Ben is a responsible learner and persists with all learning tasks. In Grade 4/5: Nate gives 100% and persists in all areas. In Grade 1/2: Hayden has demonstrated stick-ability when completing written tasks. In Prep: Kahlia has been an active participant in all activities. She completes all tasks quickly and competently. Kahlia is a responsible learner, respectful and safe. In Grade 5/6: Brock has been a responsible learner, focusing hard in class and completing tasks on time.

P&C News Newsletter 2, Term 1

Meet & Greet

Our thanks to those families who came along to our 2019 Meet &

Greet BBQ. It was a great afternoon with lots

of fun for the kids! Our thanks go to Mrs Scott & Mrs Bretz for

organising the parents vs students touch football game!

AGM

Our 2019 AGM will be held at 6pm on Monday 4th March. Everyone is welcome to attend! All executive

positions will be declared open and voted on at this meeting and

applications accepted for new members. This will be followed by a general meeting at 6:30pm, which is when we will discuss our plans

for the year.

Raffle! This term, we are holding our major raffle for this year.

Tickets will go on sale next week for the

prize which is valued at $3,000!

The raffle prize includes a Box

Trailer, a Crossfire CF70 motorbike, a battery powered

ride-on tricycle with helmet, a patio heater

and some other exciting goodies! Tickets for this

awesome prize are $5 each and we’d love it if every family could

sell a book of 10 tickets. More books

are available from the office.

Prize will be drawn in the last week of

Term 1.

We’ve started the year with a bang with our Meet & Greet and launch of our Major Raffle last week. Thank you to those families who came along and got a sneak peak at our fantastic raffle prize! This raffle is going to be imperative in us having the funds to hold our 125 year celebrations next year. Please feel free to grab an extra book of tickets from the office if you think you can sell some extra tickets for us! There are only 2,000 tickets available in this raffle and over 1,000 of them have already been distributed to

Our Wyreema community so we really hope one of our families will win this exciting prize – but you’ve got to be in it to win it! The raffle will be drawn at our end of term Movie Night on Wednesday 3rd April. This is free to attend, and a BBQ, popcorn & bar will be available at a small cost. AND you might be lucky enough to tow a trailer full of goodies home with you! We hope to see all our families at this fun, social night. Don’t forget our AGM on Monday 4th March – we hope to see some new members there!

Get to Know Us: Coordinator Hi everyone, my name is Megan for those who don't know me and I coordinate the Wyreema Before and After School Care service. I also help coordinate the Bunkers Hill Vacation Care team. I have a Bachelor in Social Studies and Theology and am looking at getting my Masters in Sociology. I am a community based person. I thrive on genuine interactions and I love being creative. My goal at Wyreema is to create a safe, inviting space for everyone to come and express themselves freely and create a network of support and understanding.

Wyreema OSHC Newsletter

Welcome Back Everyone!! We hope everyone had an amazing holiday, whether you were with OSHC or with your family and friends! We love seeing all of our new faces arrive at Before and After School Care and look forward to getting to know you all and having a great year with you! We have a new Assistant Educator, Chelsea Clark, joining us this year so come in and say hi and have a look at our room changes while you are there. We hope everyone has a great term and enjoys their time at OSHC!

Student of the week This year, we are highlighting our students achievements and choosing students of the week! We have two this week, Tiana Howell and Charlee Beckmann. Both girls have shown so much creativity and initiative this week in their craft, their activities and their interactions with others. Well done, girls!!
