Dear Community of St. Bernard,During this Lenten Season the members of our

parish community who speak Spanish (or are bilingual)

have been on retreat. As announced each week, the 12 Noon Sunday Mass has been held in the Social Hall.

Following the Mass there are discussions led by folks from the Diocesan Office for Hispanic Ministry. The focus is on ministry to the Spanish-speaking in the U.S. This is the Fifth Encounter since 1972. This one too involves participation on the parish level. It all concludes nationally in Texas in 2020.

Bishop Daniel Thomas, Apostolic Administrator for the Diocese, wants the prayerful participation of all Catholics in this parochial, diocesan, and national process. On the following page you will find a letter from him explaining V ENCUENTRO. Please read it for a better understanding of what some in our parish community are doing for the good of the Church.

It has been three months since the retirement of Bishop Lennon and the appointment of Bishop Thomas as the Administrator. Please keep them both in your prayers. Bishop Thomas is the Bishop of Toledo, Ohio. I've heard he spends a week each month in Cleveland responding to the needs of the diocese.

Recently, I sent a letter to Bishop Thomas and the directors of some diocesan offices requesting permission to begin restoration of our church pipe organ. I waited until we had the estimated funds needed to accomplish this task. With Bishop's permission, the diocesan staff will assist us in bidding, contracting, and completing the project, hopefully by Christmas 2017, so to serve us for another 70-80 years! Also recently, Bishop Thomas granted my request to decommission the Rectory at St. Mary Parish. The School is doing well and could use the rectory vacated in 2010. Likely uses for the expansion of their education ministry are: science laboratory, counseling room, Title One tutoring rooms, storage areas, and possibly other uses.

Good Lent, Fr. Dan
