WWPA HAPPENINGS:

The WWPA continues to show signs of its most competitive seasons from top to bottom in recent memory, as seven teams have now reached .500 or better, thanks in large part to big success on the weekend. At the Claremont Conver-

gence, Redlands and Santa Clara both went undefeated, while Claremont, Pomona-Pitzer and Chapman all went 3-1 or better. As the week’s lead to November and the WWPA Championships at Santa Clara, key head-to-head match-ups will take place, starting this weekend with a full slate of WWPA match-ups running from Thursday through Sunday.

Redlands Head Coach TOm WHITTEmORE surpassed the 400-win mark for career victories in men’s water polo at the University of Redlands by guiding the Bulldogs to a 4-0 showing at this weekend’s Claremont Convergence. The Bulldogs garnered

one-goal wins against Fresno Pacific University, Iona College (NY), and Johns Hopkins University (MD), be-fore nabbing Whittemore’s 401st victory with a 12-9 performance against George Washington University (DC). Whittemore began coaching the Bulldog men’s water polo program in 1988, guiding the team to its best WWPA, showing in 2004, when the Bulldogs played in the WWPA Championship game.

On the undefeated weekend, Redlands was led by senior BRENDAN mEANEy On day 2 vs. Johns Hopkins, He had 2 goals, including the game winner with 1:30 to play in the 4th period, 2 steals, and 3 ejections drawn. In the final game of the tourney vs. George Washington, he 2 goals, 3 assists, 1 ejection drawn, and 5 field blocks.

Over the weekend, Chapman went 3-1 at the Clare-mont Convergence Tournament with wins over George Washington, Fresno Pacific and Iona. CHASE PARLEE, a senior transfer from Huntington Beach, had a great deal to do with the success as he tallied 14 goals in four games along with nine steals and two assists to be named the WWPA men’s Player of the Week for Oct. 13. In the Panthers’ 11-8 win over Fresno Pacific University on Saturday, Parlee had five goals and two steals. He had three goals in each of Chapman’s other three games.

RyAN BALIKIAN of Pomona-Pitzer continues his impressive career in helping the Sagehens crack the national rankings. They went 3-1 on the weekend while hosting the Claremont Convergence, defeating Air Force, Johns Hopkins and Harvard. They move to 8-8 on the season and hold one of the league’s best records at home, sitting at 5-1. Balikian had seven goals on the weekend.

STEPHEN HOBBS led the No. 12 Santa Clara water polo team to four wins this weekend at the Claremont Convergence. The Broncos defeated hosts Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 9-6, and Pomona-Pitzer, 7-4. Santa Clara also defeated Whittier, 11-

5, and Occidental, 15-3. Hobbs was a force at 2M every single game, scoring a total of five goals, six kickouts drawn, and a also drew a 5M penalty shot. His best game in terms of goals came against Whittier, when he scored three. Three of his forced exclusions were in the game against Pomona-Pitzer.

Senior bObby GEIGEr was Air Force’s leading scorer over the weekend, registering 10 goals and two assists in four games, while also recording five steals. He led the Falcons in a 12-6 victory over Fordham at the Con-vergence Tournament, scoring five goals and an assist. Meanwhile, in the final game of the weekend, Geiger scored all three of Air Force’s goals against third-ranked UC Irvine. With his performance on the weekend, Geiger moved into a tie for eighth place on the Falcons’ career scoring list with 242 points.

In 14 Quarters of play, Whittier’s CHAD EVENRUD col-lected 49 saves, six 5-on-6 opportunities, and four assists to help the Poets to a 1-3 weekend.
