LEARNING THE ROPES: TRAINING FACILITYCongratulations on purchasing BradyGAMES’ offi cial strategy guide for SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 Featuring ECW! This guide contains all of the tips, tricks, and strategies you’ll need to defeat any Superstar, unlock every hidden feature, and rise to the top of the WWE ranks on the Road to WrestleMania or in Career Mode.
This fi rst chapter contains a general overview of the gameplay mechanics of the game, with descriptions of how and when to execute the hundreds of moves at your disposal, each of which brings you closer to WWE glory.
Training Facility
The game’s title screen is also the THQ Training Facility, where you can practice moves and techniques. To access options and view information about the Training Facility, choose the Training Facility option from the Main Menu (accessible by pressing the Start button at any point except during a match).

BASIC CONTROLS
BASIC CONTROLSIf you don’t learn these basic moves, you won’t get far in your WWE career.
STRIKES, GRAPPLES, AND REVERSALSStrikes are quick attacks like punches and kicks. Grapples are more elaborate attacks, like suplexes, slams, powerbombs, and armdrags. Grapples generally infl ict more damage than strikes, but they also take longer to set up and execute.
Strikes and grapples can be executed in a variety of situations, including: when you and your opponent are both standing, when your opponent is down, when your opponent is in the corner, when your opponent is leaning against the ropes, when you are on top of the turnbuckle, and when you are running at your opponent (or they are running at you).
Master of 1,000 Holds
Using your movement control in conjunction with your strike or grapple button usually executes a different strike or grapple than the one performed with the strike or grapple button alone.
Reversal Help
If the Reversal Help Indicator is set to ON in the In Game Options, the reversal button icon fl ashes near your Superstar’s momentum meter whenever you have a chance to counter a strike or grapple.
If you reverse an opponent’s strike, you have a number of options for what you want to do with them:

Reversals counter strikes and grapples. SmackDown vs Raw 2010 uses a one-button reversal system against any type of attack, whether it’s a strike or a grapple.
01 Learning the Ropes.indd 2 10/7/09 11:29:38 AM
Reversal Finisher or Signature Move
A strike reversal is considered a grapple as long as you are holding the opponent’s limb. If you have a finisher or signature move ready to go that can be executed from a front grapple, you can use the move during the reversal grappled state.
Breaking Up the Pin
If your partner is being pinned, run up to the pinning Superstar and break up the pin with a strike and avoid the three-count. If you are the pinning Superstar and want to break up your own pin, press z (360) or S (PS3).
Don’t Get Cocky
Your Superstar is defenseless when performing a taunt, and you can’t interrupt it. If an opponent attacks while you’re taunting, you can’t counter the attack.
You can also reverse an opponent’s fi nisher or signature move by hitting the reversal button as soon as the opponent attempts to execute the move. Successfully reversing the move drains their momentum. It also maxes out your momentum, setting you up to execute a fi nisher of your own.
Finally, when getting up off of the mat, you can enter a defensive stance to automatically avoid an opponent’s strikes or grapples. This prevents you from fully standing up until you release the defensive stance buttons, but it can be a real lifesaver if you’re up against an overly aggressive foe.
IRISH WHIPPINGIrish whipping opponents causes them to run uncontrollably. If you Irish whip them inside of the ring, they will not be able to stop until the second time they hit the ring ropes.
By default, Irish whipped opponents run in the opposite
direction from the one you’re facing when you press the Irish whip button. If you want to aim them in a different direction, push the movement stick or pad in the direction you want the opponent to run after pressing the Irish whip button.
Hammer Throw
If you hold down the Irish whip button and have the Hammer Throw ability, you can cause the opponent to bounce off of the turnbuckle or fall through the ring ropes.
TAUNTINGUse a taunt when your Superstar is not in danger of being attacked for a few seconds. Successfully pulling off a taunt boosts your Superstar’s momentum.
PINFALLMany matches end when one or more Superstars are pinned by their opponent(s). To pin opponents, stand near them when they’re down and use the pin command. If you’ve infl icted enough damage on them, they will be unable to kick out before the referee counts to three.
If an opponent is too close to the ropes when you attempt a pin, the referee will declare a “rope break” and break up the pin (assuming that the “Rope Break” game option is turned ON). To avoid this, only pin your opponents when they are away from the ropes; drag them away from the ropes before going for the pin if you must.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: CREATE MODESSmackDown vs. Raw 2010 comes complete with more Superstars, move-sets, and features than you can shake a steel chair at, but its fi ve robust Create Modes take it to an entirely new level. Between Create a WWE Superstar, Create a Finisher, Create an Entrance, Create an Entrance Movie and Create a Move Set, you can recreate just about anything you’ve ever seen on WWE programming. You can also let your imagination run wild and unleash new innovations and creations on the WWE Universe.
CREATE A WWE SUPERSTARTo design a new Superstar and customize their look, choose Create Modes from the Main Menu, then Create a WWE Superstar, and then one of the following options:
New, From Scratch Create a brand new Superstar without any pre-set options.
New, From a Template Create a new Superstar from a pre-defi ned base template.
Edit Modify an existing created Superstar that you have saved to a storage device on your console.
Regardless of whether you start from scratch or modify an existing template or saved Superstar, there are four main steps to creating a Superstar: Head, Body, Clothing, and Other.
You have a pool of create points, indicated in the bottom right corner of the screen. As you add design elements to your Superstar, the available points total decreases. When you have no create points left, your Superstar’s design is as complex as it can be. If you want to add other features, you must remove existing ones fi rst to free up some points.
HEADIn this step, you create and customize everything about your Superstar from the neck up. The fi rst thing you need to do is start from a head and face template that you can work from. Select the one that looks most like what want.
Once you have the template selected, follow the on-screen commands to edit options for the head, face, facial hair, make-up, tattoos, face paint, and piercings. Highlighting each head or face option displays a preview of how it will look on your Superstar.
Skin Color
To change the skin color of your Superstar, go to the Face option under the Head menu and select Skin, then Texture/Color.
BODYIn the Body step, you defi ne the rest of your Superstar’s natural appearance from the neck down, including height, body type, body hair, scars or piercings, or tattoos. As with the Head options, navigate the submenus and highlight options to see a preview of each on your Superstar model.
CLOTHINGIn the Clothing phase, you determine your Superstar’s ring attire. There are three main categories: Headwear (everything from the neck up), Upper Body (neck to waist, including arms), and Lower Body (waist to feet).

The last option in the Headwear, Upper Body and Lower Body submenus is Edit Layers. Selecting Edit Layers from any submenu takes you to the Layers menu, which contains three options:
Edit Parts See all of the options you’ve added to your Superstar and highlight each of them to instantly edit it.
Move Layer
Rearrange the order of the layers on your Superstar. Higher layer numbers sit on top of lower layer numbers, so you can rearrange the layers to determine which clothing articles lie on top of which. This is especially helpful if you chose to add a belt before adding pants, or if the details you’ve chosen for your Superstars mask are sitting underneath the mask itself. If your Superstar has facial hair, you can move that layer further down the list so that it isn’t covered by makeup or tattoos.
Remove PartsUse this option to quickly remove any create parts from your Superstar. Remember, this also frees up create points, which allows you to add other options to your Superstar.
Select the Crowd Signs option to choose up to four signs that the members of the audience will hold up periodically when your Superstar is competing. With over 300 to choose from, you shouldn’t have any trouble fi nding four that work for you!
Finally, choose the Vs. Screen Pose to defi ne the look of your Superstar in the pre-match menu. The attire that he is wearing when you make your choice is the attire he will wear in the pre-match screen.
As with the previous two phases, select the options that you want to change and add the parts you want on your Superstar. This is where you’ll start using up most of your create points, so keep an eye on the bar in the lower right corner of the screen.
Before fi nalizing your Superstar, select all three of the attire options and make sure that they’re all correct.
Once you have everything set just the way you want it, choose Finalize from the Other menu to fi ll out an offi cial World Wrestling Entertainment Employment Application Form, which includes the following fi elds:
OTHERThe Other phase is the last step in creating your Superstar. The fi rst three options (Edit Ring Attire, Edit Entrance Attire and Edit Cinematic Attire) determine which of your Superstar’s three attires you are currently working with; the current attire type is listed in the upper right corner of the screen.
So, for example, if you want your Superstar’s entrance attire to differ from his ring attire, choose the Edit Entrance Attire option, copy over your Superstar’s Ring Attire to use as a base, and then return to the Clothing phase to add or modify attire options.
