UNITED KINGDOM’S TOP UNIVERSITIES

Primary school: Ages 5-11Compulsory education begins at age five when students progress from Grade 1 to Grade 6, learning subjects such as English, Mathematics and Science.

Secondary school: Ages 11-16From the age of 11, students attend secondary school. In Grade 10 and Grade 11, students prepare for their General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE’s), an academic qualification awarded in up to 10 subjects.

A-levels at a sixth form college: Ages 16-18After taking GCSE’s, students can choose to pursue training at a vocational college or apprenticeship, or continue academic study for two additional years in order prepare for exams called “A-levels”. Students study three or four subjects only, which are normally related to their desired degree subject. Their A-level grades are determining factors in university admittance.

The bachelor’s degree: Ages 18-21Undergraduate students in the UK typically pursue a bachelor’s degree which specialises in one subject for three years. Entrance requirements for international students include English proficiency (with a minimum IELTS level 6.0) and an additional year of secondary school, known as a EF University Foundation Program, which is equivalent to Grade 13.

Master’s, MBA or PhD degrees: Ages 21+A traditional Master’s or MBA degree typically lasts one year, and requires both exams and a thesis to graduate. Some specialized careers require the completion of a doctoral program or PhD, which includes four to five years of advanced study and research. For most of these programs, international students are required to have a recognized undergraduate degree and an English level of at least IELTS level 6.5. MBA programs normally require at least two years of work experience.

Program overview

The EF Pre-Master’s & Pre-MBA Program consists of three main areas: language study, academic skills and specialist modules. Specialist modules are academic classes which enable students to gain confidence studying their chosen subject.

During the program’s second term, students will reinforce their language skills through official exam preparation. In addition, the curriculum further strengthens university skills, including research methods and academic writing. They’ll also explore the academic subjects they have chosen for their specialist modules.

During the third term, students will advance their academic learning skills, with a focus on communication and presentation abilities. They’ll also choose additional specialist modules. Education in North America Schooling is mandatory for all children aged six to 16. The academic calendar runs from September to June. Elementary school typically runs from Grade 1 to Grade 6 (ages 6 to 12) and Grades 7 to 8 (ages 13-14) are spent at a junior high or middle school. Grades 9-12 (ages 15 to 18) are attended at a high school.

Community collegesCommunity colleges provide a two-year associate’s degree program, often used as a springboard to a four-year bachelor’s degree at university. Community colleges have fewer admissions requirements than four-year institutions. Starting at a community college for

two years and then completing your bachelor’s degree at a university is a cost-effective way for you to obtain a university degree in the US.

Liberal arts collegesA liberal arts college is an institution that places emphasis primarily on undergraduate study in the liberal arts and sciences. Some also offer grad programs primarily in business administration, law, nursing and medicine. Liberal arts colleges can be private or public.

Public universitiesPublic universities, commonly referred as state universities, are founded and operated by state government entities, receiving most

of their funding from the state and/or federal government. Generally, these universities have statewide admission requirements and in general cost less than private universities.

Private universitiesPrivate universities receive no governmental financial support. They are funded through faculty research grants, tuition fees and alumni donations. The major reasons why students choose a private university are often due to its small class size, technological resources and research facilities.

AUSTRALIA’S TOP UNIVERSITIES

Primary and secondary schoolEducation in Australia is compulsory for eleven years, but university-bound students study for thirteen. Australian students study from Kindergarten to Grade 10, with the option of an additional two years to gain entrance to university. The curriculum is nationalized across Australia with students learning core subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Physical Education. At the end of Grade 10, students sit their School Certificate examinations. They can then choose to leave school and enter the workforce, attend a vocational school or continue studying for two more years to complete their Year 12 Certificate, required for university studies.

Bachelor’s degreesUpon completion of their Year 12 Certificate, students in Australia usually undertake a bachelor’s program for three to six years. In addition to their Year 12 certificate equivalence, international students are required to demonstrate English fluency, which can be provided by an internationally recognized test result, such as an IELTS of 6.0 or higher. Successful completion of the EF University Foundation Program can waive the language requirement for entry to our many partner universities, as well as preparing students for the academic demands of university.

Postgraduate degreesPostgraduate programs are offered in many disciplines in Australia. Master’s degrees require a minimum three year full-time bachelor’s degree and demonstrated fluency in English, such as an IELTS result of 6.5 or higher. The EF Pre-Master’s Program prepares students for the academic rigour of master’s degrees and can waive the language requirement with our many university partners upon successful completion of the course.

POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

Primary and secondary schoolPrimary and secondary education lasts for ten years and is compulsory. At the end of Grade 10 students sit the GCE O-level or GCE N-level examinations. Students who complete secondary education may proceed to pre-university education at the Junior Colleges, pursue certificate or diploma studies at one

of the Polytechnics, or leave school and enter the workforce. In the Singaporean education system, pre-university education lasts for three years. These three years will prepare students for the GCE A-level examinations. Bachelor’s degreesUpon completion of GCE A-levels, students may undertake a bachelor’s degree at one of Singapore’s public or private universities, which is obtained after three to five years of study. Bachelor’s degrees in Engineering, Dentistry, Law, Building, Real Estate, Music and Architecture require four years, while Medicine

requires five. The minimum English requirement for entry to a bachelor’s degree is IELTS 6.0 or equivalent.

Postgraduate degreesA master’s degree in Singapore can be obtained after completing one to three years of postgraduate study. The education requirement for students wishing to complete a master’s degree is a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, and the standard English language requirement is IELTS 6.5 or equivalent. Doctorate degrees are awarded after an additional two years of study.

Gymnasium: Grades 11-12/13Gymnasium is designed to prepare pupils for university and finishes with the final examination Abitur, a qualification awarded in up to 10 subjects after grade 12, mostly year 13. After the Abitur, students can choose to enter the workforce, pursue training at a vocational college or enter university. Abitur is the academic qualification required to be admitted to German universities.

UniversityUndergraduate students in Germany typically pursue a bachelor’s degree which specializes in one subject for three years. Entrance requirements for international students include a German proficiency test (TestDaF) and – if the student’s high school diploma is not considered equivalent to the Abitur – an additional year of secondary school in Germany, known as Studienkolleg, which is the equivalent to grade 13 at Gymnasium.

Universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen) focus on a practical scientific approach. The range of subjects is generally not as extensive and is focused on certain subject areas, such as technology, industry, social affairs or media. The integrated practical phases are comprised of internships spanning several weeks, extended project phases or entire practical semesters.
