The WVU at Parkersburg Foundation was incorporated in 1971 as an independent, not-for-profit organization to develop ongoing, private support for the college. It was founded solely to promote, encourage and assist in the development and growth of West Virginia Uni-versity Parkersburg. It also renders assistance to the college, its faculty, students, alumni and the citizens of West Virginia. WVU at Parkersburg Foundation is com-mitted to helping the college maintain its vision of providing quality higher education in the Mid-Ohio Valley. This is achieved by engaging in fundraising and investment strategies that align with the college’s strategic plan. The three key goals of the plan are to support efforts to make the college an exceptional place to learn, work and partner.

Dear Donor Friends,

Thank you for your support of West Virginia University at Parkersburg. You are supporting an institution where gifts received increases access to opportunity for our students, our college, our community and our state. The end result is positive economic and social impact. Thank you.

Each year it seems to be more difficult to provide the financial support that students need in order to complete a higher education goal—certificate and/or degree. Many of our students receive PELL grants, and far too many are dependent upon loans. With your support, we are able to help them to afford tuition and fees and books, without going into debt. These students are preparing to enter the workforce; they are our college’s greatest economic impact because most of our students will live and work in the mid-Ohio Valley.

Your gifts help our college better serve our community. While our college receives state funding, the funding is not sufficient to ensure that the college is more than a “good” college: our community deserves a great college! We continually strive to have the best programs and state of the art facilities. The state provided funding to build two new facilities on our Parkersburg campus: an Applied Technology Center and a Center for Early Learning. The college will need to find the means to provide most of the furnishings and equipment through grants and donations. This is opportunity to “partner” with donors to have the best college possible for our community.

What would our community and our state do without our college? Our college is the resource for the community and the state to use in encouraging business and industry to locate here. Your support of the college as it provides an educated workforce-- which encourages business and industry to expand or locate here -- is critical.

I invite you to take the time to pay a visit to our college. We are proud of what we have been able to accomplish, with your help. This year we will open two new buildings and begin renovation of buildings for science laboratories and the culinary arts program. The Energy Management program has a house lab that was constructed last academic year by students at the Wood County Career and Technical Center. The new Diversified Agriculture program is a getting a “tool shelter” for the equipment that will be used by the program on land leased from the county, shared by the WV National Guard, and college land.

Certainly, I will use my role as Chair of the Board of Directors for the American Association of Community Colleges to bring to the college federal and state grants. But, your giving will continue to help us leverage the funds we receive from other sources and will help us to not simply maintain, but thrive. Thank you for helping to make our college a college of opportunity for our students, our community, and our state.

Dear Friends of the Foundation,

New to the Foundation this winter, we are very excited and eager to continue working with the board to improve community awareness and support for WVU Parkersburg. Things have been moving fast and furious for the office since then as we work on growing our scholarship donors, grant funding and accessing opportunities of support from the communities we serve. Our students represent numerous counties in West Virginia and the needs are great for students to have the opportunity of higher education.

At the Foundation, our goal is to work closely within the community to move WVU Parkersburg to the next level of accessing educational opportunities. This can be done by supporting the Foundation through scholarship opportunities, Legacy Giving and operational support. As needs of the workforce change our college programming expands to meet those needs, and as the student population increases the need becomes greater for diverse scholarships that assist in preparing a more qualified workforce for our communities.

Mr. John Gardner, a national speaker, recently visited our campus and referred to WVU Parkersburg as a “hYBRID.” We are not only the largest community and technical college in the state of West Virginia, but the only community college to offer 4-year baccalaureate degrees, not to mention very affordable tuition. We are 8th in the nation for bachelor program affordability.

Through scholarships and financial support the Foundation provides access to opportunities for many of our students who are selected to serve on national committees because of their academic excellence, and students who are selected to travel to educational competitions and

seminars throughout the United States. These opportunities access future career possibilities for those students and name recognition for the quality of education we provide for the students of WVU Parkersburg.

You can make a difference in moving WVU Parkersburg to the next level of educational opportunities through continued support. If you have not visited our campus for a period of time, we invite you to come and be amazed at the growth and new appearance. We will be offering naming opportunities for many areas of our campus. Trisha Westbrook is the 2011-2012 recipient of the Mary “Mickey” Welch scholarship. In December, Trisha completed her bachelor of arts in business administration specializing in financial management. A mother of two, she also worked part time as a work-study in the dean’s office. Trisha really enjoyed the educational experience that she received at WVU Parkersburg. She liked that the college is affordable and appreciated the experience that the instructors brought to the classroom.

Business administration/accounting major Brenda Dickson was the 2012 recipient of the Dr. Robert and Shirley Lawrence-Berrey Study Abroad Scholarship. With the help of this scholarship, Brenda had the opportunity to participate in Quebec 2012 - An introduction to the Political and Cultural Identity of Canada and Quebec study abroad program. During the trip, students stayed at the beautiful Laval University, and for an entire week Brenda’s life took on a new and exciting routine. Mornings were breakfast at the university’s student union, followed by lectures from political scientists, history professors and anthropologists. Then, afternoons were filled with excursions to nearby places of historical and political significance. The Lawrence-Berrey scholarship was a great gift, helping Brenda by lifting a huge financial weight off of her shoulders. This scholarship allowed her to focus on her studies and to learn as much as possible in the short time that she was there.

West Virginia University at Parkersburg was one of the first institutions in the state to receive the Learn and Earn grant. Through this grant, the college has partnered with DuPont in an effort to offer a new kind of educational opportunity to students. Learn and Earn allows students to obtain a chemical and polymer degree certificate while simultaneously gaining hands-on, real world experience at DuPont. Students spend the first 12 weeks of the program in the classroom located in the Polymer Alliance Zone building. There, the students have access to the equipment necessary to obtain the skills they need to supply area businesses with a skilled workforce. They spend the second 12 weeks working at DuPont where they earn up to $12 an hour. This provides students with a chance to earn up to $11,000 while earning 30 credit hours. The second semester of the course mirrors the first, with the addition of different classroom work. “I’ve gotten great feedback from the students. We feel like it is both beneficial to them and to us,” said Robin Ambrozy, director of non-traditional programs. The third group of students began in August, and new groups will start in November and February. The enrollment process for the program is competitive. Students must meet required scores on the SAT or ACT and Work keys tests. So, not all who apply are accepted. Students who receive this certificate can then go on to work towards the Associate of applied science Board of Governors degree. While additional coursework is required, all of the classes completed will transfer. The certificate also provides students with the skills necessary to enter the workforce as an operator, setter or tender for local power, gas and chemical plants.

WVU Parkersburg Partners with DuPont for Learn and Earn Grant

DPS Showcases International Artists Right Here in West Virginia The Distinguished Performance Series of West Virginia University at Parkersburg presents nationally and internationally respected performers of music, dance and theatre arts presenting classical, contemporary, and ethnic expressions. Tickets for series events are priced to provide access to the arts for all students and members of our larger community. The 2011-12 season opened in October with a concert by SFJAzz Collective, an eight member all-star ensemble of jazz musicians that showcased the work of American musical icon Stevie Wonder. In February, the series presented Imani Winds, a contemporary classical woodwind quintet. In addition to the public concert, the ensemble performed for 500 second grade students from the WVU Parkersburg Education department’s partnership schools. The series concluded in March with a performance by Franc D’Ambrosio (pictured at right). Mr. D’Ambrosio earned the title “longest running phantom” for his lead role in the popular Andrew-Lloyd Webber musical “Phanton of the Opera.” While in Parkersburg, Mr. D’Ambrosio served as a judge for the musical theatre competion sponsored by the local chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters and presented a workshop for participants in the Smoot Theatre’s “Camp Broadway.” The 2012-13 Distinguished Performance Series will begin in September.

Dr. Robert and Shirley Lawrence-Berrey Study Abroad Scholarship

The Dr. Robert and Shirley Lawrence-Berrey Study Abroad Scholarship was set up in 1987. Their Legacy continues to ensure that WVU Parkersburg students can pursue global studies. Dr. Lawrence-Berrey passed in October 2006 and Mrs. Lawrence-Berrey passed in December 2012. Throughout their lives and beyond, their legacy provides eligible WVU Parkersburg students with the life changing experiences that come with international study. The Lawrence-

Berreys looked to the future as far as creating opportunities for the growth of the community and created access to other cultures that many of these students would never have dreamed of.

Access to a Better Learning Environment

The New Center for Early Learning New to the campus in Fall 2012 is the Center for Early Learning. The center is a 5,000 sq. ft. structure located on the west end of campus and will provide care for more than 50 children. It will be run by a staff of more than 12 employees and students and will consist of three children’s classrooms, one adult classroom for those majoring in education, a reception/office area, and a warming kitchen. A large, glass-windowed piazza for children’s activities looks to the outside features of the building. These include an approximately 15,000 sq. ft. playground surrounded by a white vinyl fence and a 750 sq. ft. pavilion donated and constructed by Michael and Brenda Miller in memory of

their grandson. The Seth Miller Pavilion will have case work for storing toys, as well as a built in TV, DVD Player and sound system. The center also offers state of the art safety features such as a Bogen emergency notification system, a fire alarm system, sprinkler system, security cameras and card access to enter. The New Applied Technology Center This summer the new Applied Technology Center opened its doors to students. Governor Earl Ray Tomblin and many other notable guests attended a ground breaking on Aug. 17 to open the center. The center houses the welding, industrial maintenance and multi-craft technology programs. A 20,000 sq. ft. building, the center will house a classroom for each of the programs, several labs and four faculty offices. The previous location of the applied

technology classrooms will undergo a 14,000 sq. ft. renovation of its own, with construction beginning in November. This renovated space will be the location of the new science wing on campus and will be complete in June of 2013.
