In a rivalry knownfor unpredictability, the 2012 version will rank among the topsin Apple Cup lore. Washington led 28-10 after Bishop San-keys second touchdown run late in the third quarter, but theHuskies wilted under a siege of self-inflicted mistakes with

turnovers and penalties coming back in favor of the Cou-gars. Carl Winston ran for three touchdowns for WashingtonState, matching the Cougars entire season total of touch-downs rushing entering Fridays game. His third TD with 7:26left, combined with Jeff Tuels 2-point conversion pass toBrett Bartolone pulled the Cougars within 28-25. Washington

was then forced to punt with 5:25 left after Price was forcedto throw it away on third down. Furney connected on a 45-yard field goal to pull the Cougars even at 28-28 with 1:59 left.Washington started at its 25 with all three timeouts. Price ledUW to the Washington State 24 with 59 seconds left. Sankey

then carried twice to the 15, forcing Washington State to useits final timeout with 47 seconds left and the Huskies facinga third-and-1. Washingtons school record-tying 18th penaltybacked them up, and Sankey came up short on third down.Washington coach Steve Sarkisian ran the clock down to 5seconds before calling timeout. Coons was 3 of 4 inside 40yards, but the snap back to holder Cody Bruns was low and

the timing was off. Washington State elected to go on de-fense first in overtime. Price was pressured by Logan Mayeson the first play of the extra session and he tried to throw forSankey, but the pass landed in the arms of Pole. The big de-fensive lineman tried to end the game with the interceptionreturn, but was caught at the 5 by Bruns. Washington State

took possession and Tuel found Bartolone for 10 yards to the

    2013 WASHINGTON STATEFOOTBALL2

    Head Coach

    Second Season

    MIKE LEACH

Washington State Universi ty announced Nov. 30, 2011 that M ike Leach had been namedthe Cougar s head football coach .

In his first season in Pullman, Leachs high-powered offense led the conference inpassing, averaging 330. 42 yards per game. That figure ranked ninth nationally and markedthe second-highest average in school hist ory. Seven times the Cougars threw for morethan 35 0 yards, including the season- ending, 31-28, overt ime w in agains t Washington. Ina season that produced a 3-9 overall record, the Cougars saw a bit of a youth movementas 17 freshmen played and only four seniors star ted regularly. Academically, nine Cougarsreceived Pac-12 All-Academic honors while the 2012 fall semester football GPA of 2.66marked the first time the foot ball team had been over a 2.60 GPA for fall semest er.

Leach brought a proven record of winning to Pullman. In 10 seasons as a head coach, all at Texas Tech (2000-09) his program earned 10 bowl bids. In addition, the Susanville,Calif., native who was raised in Cody, Wyo., recorded a school-record 84 victories duringhis tenure.

Leading the most prolific passing off ense in the country, Leach received three nationalcoach of the year awards in 2008 - the Woody Hayes Award, Howie Long/Fieldturf Coachof the Year, and George Munger Award. His offense spreads the field with his excitingbrand of football and guided Texas Tech to six NC AA passing t itles and three tot al offensetit les during his 10 seasons in L ubbock. L eachs of fense produced school records in nearlyevery passing category in 200 0, his first season with the Red Raiders, but surpassed thosenumbers in each of his next nine seasons.

During Leachs time in Lubbock, Texas, the Red Raiders increased their yards per gameby more than 150 and averaged nearly 20 points more per outing. In the passing game,Texas Tech threw for about 300 yards more per game in the decade Leach was at the helm.

Leach led Texas Tech to one of the mos t memorable seasons in school history in 20 08 as t he team set a program record wit h 11 regular-season wins en route to

an 11-2 record. The win total tied the mark, set previously by the 1953 and 1973 Red Raider squads. Numerous accolades poured in from across the country as anunprecedented four players earned first-team A ll-America sta tus, in addition t o Leachs three coach of the year honors. Quarterback Graham Harrell, offensiv e tackleRylan Reed and of fensive guard Brandon Carter each garnered first-team honors, while wide receiver Michael Crabtree was honored as a unanimous consensuAll-American for the second-straight season.

On the field in 2008, the Red Raiders led the nation in passing for the sixth time in Leachs ten seasons and ranked among the top five in total offense. Harrelfinished his storied career second on the NCAA career passing yardage list wit h 15,79 3 yards. Harrell also broke the career NCA A passing touchdowns mark with134.

The Texas Tech program has established it self as one of the nations leading producers of productive quarterbacks since the 200 0 season. Harrell threw for 4, 555yards in his debut as the starter in 2006 and became the sixth player and third Red Raider in NCAA history to throw for 5,000 yards in a season with his 5,705-yardeffor t in 20 07 and 5,111 yards last season. He also is the third quarterback under Leach to win nine games in a season and the first Red Raider in histor y to win 11 in aregular season. Former quarterback Kliff Kingsbury in 20 02 and Cody Hodges in 2005 each posted nine-win seasons during their careers, while 2003 and 20 04 signacallers B.J. Sy mons and Sonny Cumbie each won eight games in their respective seasons as the star ter.

The Red Raiders improved their total of fensive numbers from 32 4.8 yards per game to 5 31.0 yards per game since Leachs arrival. Leachs first nine seasons at Tecrank as the top nine all-time in total offense, while scoring went from 2 3 points per game in 1999 to a school-record 43. 8 points in 20 08. The mos t significant increaswas in the passing game, where the Red Raiders averaged 475.3 yards per game in 200 8 compared to 175.4 yards in 199 9.

The running game flourished under Leach as well. Former Red Raider Taurean Henderson holds the NCA A career record for receptions by a running back. The RedRaiders 28 to tal rushing scores in 20 08 were the mos t for a Tech team since the 199 3 team scored 30. Despit e Techs offense revolv ing around the pass, Leach did atremendous job of incorporating the running back posit ion into the mix . Henderson finished his career with 30 3 receptions, which ranks firs t in NCA A history amongrunning backs and fourth overall.

The Red Raiders were not known solely for their play on the scoring side of the ball. The Texas Tech defense also flourished during Leachs 10 seasons. TexasTech held opponents without an offensi ve touchdown a dozen times under Leach, including seven shutouts. Three of the whitewashes came in 200 0 when the RedRaiders tied for the nati onal lead.

The play of the special teams also improved wit h each season. Former placekicker Alex Trlica holds the NCA A record with 2 33 career ext ra points and anotherecord for extra points made without a miss. He finished wit h 377 career points, which ranks among the top 10 in NCAA histor y among kickers. While leading the RedRaiders to 76 wi ns in his nine seasons, Leach is the only coach in school histor y to lead ten teams to bowl games.

Although Leachs presence was felt t hroughout the team, it also was beneficial for the players individually. In addit ion to picking up the Sammy B augh Trophy in200 7, Harrell was the recipient of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of F ames Post-Graduate Scholarship and was one of 15 players selectedas a candidate for the prestigious Draddy Award, the academic Heisman. Harrell also ranked fourth in the 2008 Heisman voting, while Crabtree was fifth. Symonswas the second Tech quarterback to receive The Touchdown Club of Columbus Sammy Baugh Trophy (Kingsbury in 2 002 ).

Kingsbury, a 200 2 All-Big 12 first-team quarterback and sixth-round draft pick of the New England Patriots , led the Big 12 Conference in several passing categories
