DINING GUIDE 2012

One of the best parts of going to college in New York City is that you don’t always have to eat like a student. Forget dining hall food three times a day — you have all kinds of cuisine at your fingertips. But finding a balance between going out to eat and staying in

can be difficult, and knowing where to go can be even more overwhelming.

As you begin your first year at NYU, the staff of the Washington Square News wants you to feel both welcomed and well fed. So we’ve put together this guide to help you navi-gate dining in the different regions that surround our campus. Eat well as your learn your way around. New York City is even better — and less scary — on a full stomach.

We have narrowed down our favorite fast foods, slow foods, hole-in-the-wall joints, chains, bistros, cafes and the best of the classics to help you find food places fit for your taste. As students who have lived here, studied here, went out and stayed out here, we designed this guide with the NYU kid in mind. We hope it helps make one part of this big city a little smaller for you as you embark on this new adventure. Make it a tasty one.

Cheers,

The WSN staff

fOOd dOn’tS fOR A hOt dAte

Here are a few tips to avoid an embarrassing food fiasco when out on date with that cute guy or girl from your class:

fingeR fOOdS With burgers, tacos or buffalo wings, you risk the possi-bility of smearing sauce on your face or having your meal collapse and spill its contents all over your plate. This signals to your date that you’re messy.

SpAghetti The dog lov-ers in “Lady in the Tramp” may have looked cute shar-ing a plate of spaghetti, but in reality it’s not quite as romantic. No one wants to watch his or her date slurp-ing strands of pasta, and they don’t want to listen to the sound of a fork twisting on a plate. You’re sure to leave with a few splotches of tomato sauce on your shirt, too.

SOUp The slurping is an immediate turn-off. When the waiter asks, “Soup or

salad?” your answer should always be, “Salad, please.”

gARliC And OniOn Or-der the garlic shrimp lin-guine or garlic knots and you will end the evening with a handshake instead of a goodnight kiss.

ClingY fOOdS Leafy greens such as steamed spinach, seaweed, broccoli or corn-on-the-cob can lin-ger in between your teeth. Avoid these foods to ensure a pearly white smile.

Mini-COffee diCtiOnARY

The cafe menus around New

York can be daunting and list

about 10 different ways to

make a cup of coffee. Navigate

the barista jargon with this

mini guide:

fLAT WHITE – Essentially a

latte with almost no foam, a

Flat White is prepared with

steamed milk poured from

the bottom of the pitcher of

an espresso shot to create a

thick and smooth texture of

microfoam.

MACChiAtO – Most have

heard of a macchiato and attri-

bute the meaning to Starbucks’

big, frothy, caramel and milky

beverage. The real Italian drink

is a small shot of espresso with

just a tiny bit of steamed milk

poured on top. This tasty drink

can generally be consumed in

about 45 seconds.

RISTRETTO – Some espresso

machines now create “ris-

tretto” shots. These are short

shots, meaning they have

less water, which produces a

bolder taste. This is an impor-

tant term to know as a double

ristretto pours about one and

a half ounces of espresso as

compared to a regular double

espresso shot, which is closer

to 2 ounces. Ristrettos have

less volume, but can be just as

strong.

CORTADO – This Spanish

drink is becoming more and

more popular in New York. It

is prepared the same way as

a latte and contains the same

amount of espresso, but only

uses about half as much milk

which gives it a much more

distinct coffee taste. It comes

in one size and can be pre-

pared with ice. —HANNAH BORENSTEIN

FEATURESFrom Fashion to Food:

Chef Hong Thaimee

Step into Chef Hong Thaimee’s restaurant Ngam, and the first thing a patron spots is the word “Love” emblazoned on the wall in marquee lights. This symbol is the essence of what Hong wants guests to feel when they taste her food and experience Ngam. Setting aside a few minutes to speak with me about her journey, her vision and her future, Hong offers us a look into the in-ception of this Thai escape in the middle of Manhattan’s East Village.

QUeStiOn: You went from modeling in Thailand to working at Merck, a pharma-ceutical company, to opening up your own restaurant. That’s a lot of drastic life chang-es. How did this happen?

AnSWeR: This is a dream project for me. I think life is an adventure and I came to the realization that I want to do something good for people. I started to realize that there’s more to life. I said, “What can I do?” I am very inspired by successful people that give

back. So I quit my job and started traveling the world. I landed here in New York.

Q: Shortly after, you scored a job with the famed Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten at his restaurant Spice Mar-ket. Was that your lucky break?

A: I applied for a job as a hostess, and when the in-terviewer asked me “What exactly would you like to do?” I said I wanted to cook Thai food and work in the kitchen. I had no idea how big [Vongerichten] was. When the interviewer heard that, he thought maybe I was fearless. So he trans-ferred me to the kitchen. I got my first gig at one of the most successful restaurants. I fought my way from not knowing anything in the kitchen. When I look back I think that time was the boot camp of this dream.

Q: Did you come up with the idea of Ngam before you opened, or did you start it on a whim?

A: Before I traveled, I con-ceptualized what kind of business I wanted to have. During that time at Spice Market, people tasted my food and said, “Why don’t you open your own restau-rant so people can know more about you?” It took me a while, [and] it was hard, but I never gave up. The idea [was to] deliver some-thing that is greater than

the product: to make people smile.

Q: You wanted to introduce diners to the “true flavors of Thai cuisine.” How did West-ern palates take this kind of approach?

A: My flavor profile is different. I see myself as a bridge. I’m still Thai in my heart, but New York is my second home, so I see the missing part — the flavor of my childhood that I can bring over here. I don’t want to say it’s fusion. I think the term should be “reverse-fusion” because I put the Thai spin into the Western. The world is so connected, and your

comfort food may not be from your own nationality. That’s why Ngam is modern comfort food.

Q: Do you ever think about opening up multiple restau-rants?

A: Well, the sky’s the limit. I’d love to do that. For some-one who has only been here six years and [has] done this much, you never know.

Head on over to Chef Hong’s flagship restaurant Ngam, located at 99 Third Ave. between 12th and 13th streets to get a home-cooked Thai comfort meal right by Union Square.

Whether you’re a freshman getting accustomed to the big city or a senior ready to take on the real world, an NYU meal plan is great way to save time and effort when it comes to food.

Every NYU meal plan comes with an allotted number of dining dollars, which can be spent at any NYU dining location. Dining dollars work like a bank debit card and can be accessed through your NYU ID. Each time you swipe your card to use the dollars, the money spent is subtracted from the total semester amount. Any dining dollars not spent during the fall semester roll over to your bal-ance for the spring semester.

Many of the NYU dining locations also have small grocery centers where you can replenish your supply of bathroom, kitchen or cleaning supplies. According to Carmen Mayes, marketing manager at NYU Dining, many students don’t use the dollars to their full potential.

“Students tend to hoard their dining dollars — they need to understand that it’s

disposable income,” Mayes said. “Instead of buying a bottle of water everyday from the drugstore, you can get a whole package of bottles at one of our shops.”

Depending on the number of dining dollars that comes with the meal plan of your choice (details can be found on the NYU dining website), here are some tips on how to wisely spend that extra money and save your own:

1. UNIVERSITY HALL

COmmONS CAfE: U-Hall Cafe is great for its popular Burger Studio, but you can also take advantage of their Provisions on Demand convenience store. You can get anything from a pack of soda and cleaning supplies, to frozen dinners and fresh fruit. It’s a great place to restock your everyday needs.

2. STARBUCKS AT fAYE’S:

Rather than getting a Caramel Macchiato at the Starbucks on Astor Place, use your dining dollars to get your favorite drink at the Starbucks on campus. Buy a tumbler or a

coffee pack for home while you’re at it. Be wary, as the line tends to get quite long in between classes.

3. DUNKIN’ DONUTS: America runs on Dunkin’, and now you can, too, with your dining dollars. Located right next to U-Hall on Union Square, Dunkin Donuts also accepts catering orders with dining dollars or campus cash.

4. ARGO TEA: If coffee is not

your morning wake-up, stop by the Argo Tea located in the Academic Resource Center to get all of your favorite choices, plus some cute porcelain mugs and supplies to make tea at home.

For other dining dollar treats,

check out the Yolato station at the kimmel Center Market-place for some tasty frozen yogurt, or stop by Peet’s Coffee in the lobby of Weinstein Hall for a less-crowded cup of Joe. Be sure to also check out Wein-stein Dining Hall and Palladium Food Court for more of your grocery needs.

Before you spend your money at any of the great eats within this guide, be sure to check out which locations accept NYU Campus Cash. Just like a debit card, Campus Cash places a bal-ance on your NYU ID and can be filled automatically online. Students are able to pay for goods at participating restaurants or cafes and are privy to deals, coupons and specials provided es-pecially for the NYU community. But unlike debit cards, Campus Cash never expires and is fully refundable if your card is lost. for a full list of merchant locations, visit nyu.edu/nyucard.C

Satisfy your worldly appetiteIn New York City there is no short-

age of corner delis and affordable pizzerias to satiate our gastronomic needs. We also have the luxury of being surrounded by an array of multi-ethnic food spots that never cease to delight. So prepare your pal-ate for the intriguing foreign foods the city has to offer.

1. LIANG pI “COLD SKIN” NOODLES AT XI’AN fAmOUS fOODS. American versions of Chinese grub have left its authenticity to a clichéd standstill. But with locations in Flushing, Chinatown and the East Village, Xi’an Famous Foods hails Northern Chinese specialty dishes. Some of these delicacies include the chewy and bouncy Liang Pi Noodles, which are made with plain wheat flour and packed with sesame sauce, chili oil, soft cilantro and crunchy sprouts.

81 ST. mARKS pL., AT 1ST AVE.

2. TAGINE AT ZERZA. Defined by authentic home cooking and distinct North African décor, Tagine at Zerza is the epitome of Moroccan and Mediterranean es-sence. After the restaurant relocated in July, meat dishes are now cooked in a clay tandoori oven instead of a Moroccan grill. The tastiest treats are the Tagine entrees (slow-cooked stews with aromatic meat, veg-etables and sauce) like the Lamb Mrouzia simmered with apricots and almonds. The kefta spiced meatballs, with poached eggs and couscous are also noteworthy.

3. WUERSTE AT LEDERHOSEN. More a German beer hall than a con-

ventional restaurant, Lederhosen de-livers a festive ambiance. Try a few of the succulent Wuerste, or sausage sandwiches, such as the knackwurst (boiled beef and pork frankfurter) and the famous Currywurst (grilled beef sausage with homemade sauce). All sausages are served on crusty rolls with sauerkraut, red cab-bage, onions and mustard.

4. CHICKEN mAKHANI AT pAKISTAN TEA HOUSE. With its long biryani, tandoori and bread selections, you have to choose generously, albeit wisely, at this TriBeCa takeout spot. Have a go at the Chicken Makhani, also known as butter chicken, served with salad, rice and coriander chutney — a dish that is rustically divine and flavor-fully explosive. Try complementing your meal with their naan and paratha breads.

176 CHURCH ST., NEAR READE ST.

5. CEVICHE AT mANCORA. Take advantage of the lunch prix-fixe on Mancora’s menu — which includes an appetizer, an entrée and a soft drink — as well as its enticing maritime furnishings. Come specifi-cally for one of the several ceviches (typically a raw seafood dish in a mélange of citrus juices and chili peppers, seasoned with cilantro, coriander and other spices.) Try the Tiradito De Pescado, a more original version, or the Ceviche Marinera Nortena, a variation with shrimp and scallops.

Everyone hears about LivingSocial and Groupon as the top discount apps around town. But for those of us who are looking for a more food-fo-cused set of discounts, here are five free dining discount gems you don’t want to pass up.

1. SCOUTmOB — Available for iPhone, An-droid, Blackberry

Scoutmob offers a wide range of food-oriented deals orga-nized by location, new listings, expiring listings and food type. Most deals will say 50 percent off, but keep scrolling for the maximum discount, usu-ally caps off around 20 to $30. Every once in a while when a food discount is advertised as 100 percent off, free food is available at your fingertips.

2. BLACKBOARD EATS — Available for iPhone, Android

Based on a weekly email

service, Blackboard Eats show-cases deals and secret meal perks at top restaurants around the city. Each deal is accessed via a Blackboard Eats Passcode, which is the ticket you hold to cash in the deal. These deals are only available for a certain period of time, so if you would like a specific deal make sure to request a code before it disappears.

3. HAppY HOURS

— Available for iPhone, An-droid, Blackberry

Though this app may seem alcohol centric, there are some hidden food treasures to be found. Cheap bar food is never something to exclude from your culinary palette.

4. BITEHUNTER — Available for iPhone, Android coming soon

BiteHunter is an app that compiles all of the best din-ing deals from all of the best

discount sites. Aggregating listings from coupon websites such as Amazon, Yelp, Living Social, Groupon and many others, BiteHunter pools them together to create one easy app focused on providing discount-ed dining.

5. RESTAURANT.COm — Available for iPhone, Android

The Restaurant.com app allows users to search res-taurants and their deals by city, zip and nearby locations. Purchase a choice of discount certificates after finding an enticing restaurant, and store it on your app. Certificates range from $5 worth of food for $2, to $100 worth of food for $40, with designated minimum purchases.
