ITU-D developed the Special InitiativeAssistance to Indigenous Peoples
World Telecommunication Development Conference in 2002 (WTDC-02) ITU developed a special initiative for “Assistance to Indigenous Peoples”
with a view to support Member States in addressing special needs of indigenous peoples, ITU-Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) included in its work activities dedicated actions and projects, based on the preservation of their heritage and cultural legacy.
BDT developed dedicated projects, activities and capacity building programmes for Indigenous Peoples, targeting to promote access to and use of ICTs with respect of their tradition and cultural legacy, and thus facilitate their social and economic development.
In line with Article 22 of WSIS Tunis Commitment

ITU seeks cooperation and partnership with Indigenous Organizations and Leaders to involve them in ITU activities and projects so they can benefit from the work developed ; In 2005, the Regulatory Commission of the Navajo Nation – USA, has joined the ITU-D as a Sector Member. IITF (ICT Indigenous Task Force- WSIS ) is currently in on-going process to become ITU-D Sector Member

“ EDUCATION PROGRAME IN ICT FOR INDIGENOUS PEOPLES”
From 2005 to 2010 ITU developed a package of three (3) on-line training courses on the topics 1,2 and 3In 2011 the courses are project management oriented.
Collaboration with “Indigenous Fund for the Development of Indigenous Peoples in Latin America and the Caribbean “Fondo Indigena” .
To date, over 1’000 indigenous have benefited of ITU on-line training courses
Development with focus on the identity of Indigenous Peoples through the use of and access to ICTs
Development with focus on the cultural legacy of Indigenous Peoples ; business models through the use of ICTs

Develop a workshop on ICT and Indigenous Digital Inclusion for indigenous leaders of Brazil (held in Conceição do Araguaia State of Para, Brazil 18-23 August 2006)Share ICT experience and best practices between the North American (Navajo Nation) and representatives of over 750 indigenous participants to the event from the Brazilian Amazonia, including the states of Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Tocantins.
