LIFE OF CHRIST 3

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to this self-study course on the Life of Christ. This course will give you the inside story of Jesus when He walked on this earth! The “Life of Christ” course is a self-study prepared for the T.R.I.B.E. programme of the Native Bible Centre. (T.R.I.B.E. is Training Resources for Indian Bible Education.) It is one of the “Chronological” courses. There are eleven chapters with “Test Yourself” questions at the end

of each chapter. The answers for these questions are located in the back of

the book.

You will need a Bible dictionary to complete some of the work for this course. If you are taking the course for credit, you will need to take the two tests included in this book. The mid-term test after lesson 6 covers lessons 1-6. The final test after Lesson 11 covers chapters 7-11. When you have completed the course, mail the two tests to the Native Bible Centre. They will be corrected and your grade will be recorded. The credit fee for each T.R.I.B.E. course is $5.00. If you are not taking the course for credit, you do not have to mail in your tests.

LIFE OF CHRIST 6

JESUS

Jesus! No other name draws people together so closely. But at the same time no other name causes some to seethe with anger at even the mention of that name. What is it about the name Jesus that divides people so clearly? Why do some treat the name of Jesus with contempt while others hold it to the highest heights? What is Jesus and the cross all about? Jesus came to save sinners! What a thrill this is for a believer! But people without Christ don’t want to be reminded of their sins. Jesus is “the way, the truth and the life” (John 14:6) and the One who saves us from our sins (Matthew 1:21). People who refuse to ask for forgiveness from sin cannot love the name of Jesus. Yet His name “is above every name,” and one day “every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord” (Philippians 2:9,11).

Jesus – O how sweet the name,

Jesus – every day the same; Jesus – let all saints proclaim

Its worthy praise forever.

LIFE OF CHRIST 7 LESSON 1 INTRODUCTION TO THE LIFE OF CHRIST

Lesson 1

INTRODUCTION TO THE LIFE OF CHRIST

Many people today know very little about Jesus Christ. All we know about Him is found in the Bible. It is important then for a believer to study the four Gospels – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John – to put together the complete picture of Christ’s life. I trust that this study will change your life as you take a close look at the greatest Person who ever walked the earth.

Jesus Before His Birth in Bethlehem You must remember that Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem was not His beginning. As God, Jesus is eternal. He has always existed. At His birth in Bethlehem he took on human flesh. This is called incarnation. He took on human flesh so He could later die on the cross for our sins. 1. What do the following verses say that show that Jesus is eternal?

John 1:1 ______________________________________________________________________

“The Word” is another name for Jesus.

When God began the creation, Jesus was already in existence.

Colossians 1:17 ________________________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________________

When it says He is before all things, it means He existed before everything else.

John 8:54-59 ___________________________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________________

2. Why did the Jews want to kill Jesus? _____________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________________

Abraham lived 2000 years before Jesus was born in Bethlehem.

As you study the life of Jesus on this earth, keep in mind that

He is the eternal Son of God who willingly came to this earth in a body of flesh.

LIFE OF CHRIST 8 LESSON 1 INTRODUCTION TO THE LIFE OF CHRIST

The World Into Which Jesus Was Born

The world Jesus was born into was quite different than our world today. The country of Palestine (also called Israel) was under Roman rule. The Roman headquarters were in Italy. The people Jesus taught and wanted to reach were mostly Jews. The culture was much different than our way of doing things today. These are things that must be kept in mind when studying the life of Christ.

The Land In Which Christ Lived On the following page you will find a map of Palestine. Jesus never traveled any farther than the places you see on this map. Study the names of the provinces, cities and seas on this map. You will also be asked to locate them later on a map that is not marked. The provinces are: Galilee Samaria Judea Decapolis Perea

Jesus spent most of His time in Galilee Note the two main seas: Galilee These are connected

Dead Sea by the Jordan River.

The rest of the names are cities that Jesus visited.

You will be referring to this map many times during this study

LIFE OF CHRIST 10 LESSON 1 INTRODUCTION TO THE LIFE OF CHRIST

The land of Palestine can be divided into four areas:

1. Along the West Coast you find low, flat, coastal plains. 2. In the middle of the country there are the central mountains. (Jerusalem is up on a

mountain.) 3. The Jordan valley runs in the central area.

4. The Eastern Mountains are located on the east side of the Jordan River.

The climate in Palestine is generally quite mild, with winter temperatures in Jerusalem averaging +40 degrees F. Summer temperatures average around +70 degrees F.

There were four men who ruled in Palestine who affected the life of Christ. They are listed below. Match them up with the verses of Scripture by drawing a line.

1. Herod Antipas 1. Matthew 27:2 (Son of Herod the Great Ruled from 4 B.C. to A.D. 39.) 2 Pontius Pilate 2. Matthew 2:22 (Procurator of Judea from A.D. 26 to 36.) 3. Herod the Great 3. Matthew 14:1-3 (The founder of the dynasty that ruled Palestine.) 4 Archelaus 4. Matthew 2:1 (Son of Herod the Great. Ruled 4 B.C. to 6 A.D. Number 2, 3 and 4 all ruled in Judea

The men listed above were evil rulers, but most of the time they allowed the Jews to do what they wanted to do. The Jews had their own system of laws and councils and it was the Jews who later condemned Jesus to die on the cross.

Note the location of Rome on this map. Rome was

in control of Palestine when

Christ was born.

LIFE OF CHRIST 15 LESSON 2 OVERVIEW OF THE LIFE OF CHRIST

Lesson 2 AN OVERVIEW OF THE LIFE OF CHRIST

The study of Christ’s life is found in the first four books of the New Testament. This study attempts to pull together all the material from all four Gospels – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Remember that you are studying to get a general overview of Jesus’ life and not to look closely at every single event. In the other chapters of this book you will take a closer look at the different parts of the life of Christ.

WHY ARE THERE FOUR GOSPELS?

Each of the four Gospel writers presents a different picture of Christ. Each of the Gospels was written to a different group of people. For example: Matthew wrote to Jews, so he emphasized things in the life of Christ that would

apply to the Jews. Luke wrote to the Greeks, so he had a different emphasis. The four different accounts of the life of Christ all agree and that gives us more proof that these reports are accurate.

CHRIST’S 3 1/2 YEARS OF WORK

The first thirty years of Christ’s life was spent in preparation for His main job. He only had 3½ years of actual service to people.

LIFE OF CHRIST 16 LESSON 2 OVERVIEW OF THE LIFE OF CHRIST

The three and one-half years can be divided up as follows:

FIRST YEAR: YEAR OF BEGINNING -- Jesus did not attract a lot of attention in this first year. This slowly changed as the year went on and He became more popular.

SECOND YEAR: YEAR OF POPULARITY – It was during this year that His popularity was very high. He had many large crowds and miraculously fed thousands.

This second year was actually 14 months.

THIRD YEAR: YEAR OF OPPOSITION – His popularity did not last very long. The religious leaders opposed Christ. It was during this time that they sought to put Him to death.

A CHART OF JESUS’ LIFE The chart below gives an overview of the life of Christ. Note the numbers near the center of the circle. These put the divisions of Christ’s three and one-half years in order.

The second circle gives the amount of time that Jesus spent in each of the areas.

LIFE OF CHRIST 17 LESSON 2 OVERVIEW OF THE LIFE OF CHRIST

Note that Jesus spent most of His time in Galilee. In fact, over half of His time was spent in Galilee. The majority of the people in Galilee were Gentiles. Locate Galilee on the map in Chapter One (page 9). Also, note that Jesus was not popular for very long. The whole life and work of Christ lead up to His death and resurrection. Remember that this was his main mission. Although the people wanted to kill Him earlier, God had set the time for Christ to die. 1. What does 1 Peter 2:22-25 give as Christ’s reason for dying?

LIFE OF CHRIST 21 LESSON 3 JESUS PREPARES FOR HIS WORK

Lesson 3

JESUS PREPARES FOR HIS WORK

In this lesson, you will begin to take a closer look at the life of Christ. You will not be studying every detail, but you will learn the main parts of Jesus’ life.

The gospels include very little information on the first thirty years of Jesus’ life.

THE BIRTH OF JESUS

Just about everyone in the world celebrates Christmas. Many people do not realize what Christmas really is all about. The birth of Christ is connected with the birth of another man who would prepare the way for Christ. Luke 1:1-17 records the announcement of this birth. Read these verses and answer the following questions. 1 To whom did the angel appear? _________________________________________________

2. What was the name he was to give his son? _______________________________________

3. What work was this son to do? _________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________________

4. Who was the “Lord” mentioned in these verses? ___________________________________

______________________________________________________________________________

THE PURPOSE OF THIS COURSE IS TO:

♦ teach you the main reason for Jesus’ coming, ♦ help you see His movement in Palestine, ♦ help you understand and put into practice the spiritual truths Jesus sought to teach.

LIFE OF CHRIST 22 LESSON 3 JESUS PREPARES FOR HIS WORK

An angel also announced the coming birth of Jesus to His mother. Read Luke 1:26-38 and write what was different about this birth. How does Isaiah 7:14 fit into this setting?

Isaiah 7:14 was written 742 years before Jesus was born. ______________________________________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________________

The account of the actual birth of Christ is found in Luke 2:1-20. Read these verses carefully several times. 1. Why was Jesus laid in a manger at His birth?

THE VISIT OF THE WISE MEN

MATTHEW 2:1-12

Matthew is the only gospel written to include the report of the wise men. Matthew was writing to the Jews and wanted to show them that Jesus was their king. The story of the wise men that came to worship Christ demonstrates that He is a king. Read Matthew 2:1-12. 1. How many wise men came to see the child?

Magi is another name for wise men. _________________________________________________

THE GREAT ESCAPE TO EGYPT MATTHEW 2:13-18

Here again, Matthew is the only one of the gospels to record this trip to Egypt. Study Matthew 2:13-18

Matthew 4:11: “On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary,

and they bowed down and worshiped HIM….”

NOTE: Mary was not given any worship.

JESUS GROWS UP IN NAZARETH. Luke 2:39-52

After Herod died an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him to return to Israel. Herod’s son, Archelaus, was now in power, so Joseph did not want to go to Judea. Instead, he was instructed to go back to his home in Nazareth. Make sure you know where Nazareth is on the map. Luke 2:39-52 describes this period of Jesus’ life. Read these verses.

4. What amazed the people the most about this twelve-year old boy?

______________________________________________________________________________

God has experienced life’s trials through Jesus’ life on earth. He has Himself gone through the entire human experience.

This includes small irritations of family life and the responsibility of hard work.

He knew about the lack of money as well as the worst pain and humiliation, defeat, despair and death.

When He became a man, He was born in poverty and died in disgrace.

He endured all this so we could live with Him forever! (Read Hebrews 12:2)

5. What does Luke 2:52 say about Jesus’ development?

______________________________________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________________

Remember, Jesus was different from every other person who was ever born. He was the God-man. He was both God and man at the same time. As God, He could do miracles. As a man, He got tired. He needed food and He felt the pain of the cross. Let these truths soak into your mind. 6. What important truth has God shown you from this lesson? ___________________________

10. What makes Jesus different from all other people?

______________________________________________________________________________

Mythology is filled with legends of ancient gods who descended from heaven and took human form, but no one ever heard or saw them, and no one ever touched them. But God’s dream was to draw near to man. God coming in the flesh (Jesus) is how His dream came true! The coming of Jesus to earth is the proof with which no one can argue: that God will do anything to draw near to us.

LIFE OF CHRIST 29 LESSON 4 JESUS BEGINS HIS WORK

Lesson 4

JESUS BEGINS HIS WORK

In the New Testament, Jesus is called the Christ. This word meant the “anointed one.” In the Old Testament, kings of Israel were always anointed. (When the king took his office, God’s prophet poured oil on his head.) The Old Testament word for this was “Messiah.” The Jews were looking for a promised King (Messiah) who would deliver them. Jesus was this Messiah but the Jews refused to believe this. What does John 1:11 say about how the people received Christ?

______________________________________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________________

Jesus told the woman at the well in John 4:25-26 that He was the Messiah. Read those verses.

The word “Messiah” is used just two times in the New Testament – John 1:41 and

John 4:25.

The title “Christ” is used over 50 times in the Gospels and over 520 times in the New Testament.

Only Jesus, the perfect sacrifice, can declare guilty people perfect.

LIFE OF CHRIST 30 LESSON 4 JESUS BEGINS HIS WORK

AN OVERVIEW OF THE LIFE OF CHRIST

Up until this time, very few people knew about Christ. His baptism was actually the beginning of His work that ended in His death and resurrection.

Keep in mind that His ministry to people was around three years in length.

Year one – Year of Beginning

LIFE OF CHRIST 31 LESSON 4 JESUS BEGINS HIS WORK

JOHN THE BAPTIST

Read Matthew 3:1-12, Mark 1:2-8, Luke 3:1-20, John 1:19-28 In Bible times a coming king often had someone go before him to announce his coming. This was true in the story of Jesus as well. God used a man named John the Baptist.

1. Give a short description of John the Baptist’s clothing and food. (Matthew 3:4) ________________________________________________________

b. _________________________________________________________________________

c. _________________________________________________________________________

3. Read John 1:29-34. What did John teach about Jesus?

______________________________________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________________

John denied being the Christ. He said he was not even worthy to untie the thongs on Christ’s sandals.

4. What eventually happened to John the Baptist? Read Luke 3:19-20 and Matthew 14:3-12.

THE BAPTISM OF JESUS

Read Matthew 3:13-17, Mark 1:9-11, Luke 3:21-23

1. What did John’s baptism normally show? (Luke 3:3, Acts 19:4)

______________________________________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________________

Acts points out that John told the people to believe in the Christ. Jesus never sinned. Therefore, when he was baptized, it was not for repentance of sins.

When Jesus was baptized, it accomplished several things. Jesus said it was to “fulfill all righteousness.” (Matthew 3:15) When Jesus was baptized, He was the only one who could meet the standard of sinlessness that God demanded. Since John baptized Jesus, it also showed that Jesus identified with John and the work he was doing. It also began Christ’s 3½ years of work. 2. After Jesus was baptized, what were two of the unusual things that happened? (Matthew 3:16-17) a.

b. ___________________________________________________________________________

3. What impressed you the most about the baptism of Jesus?

______________________________________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________________

Christian baptism is different from this baptism. You must accept Christ first and then be baptized.

Baptism does not make you a Christian. This would make a good study for you sometime.

4. Have you ever been baptized as a Christian? _______________________________________

THE PASSOVER

The Passover was the most important Jewish holiday and it brought visitors to Jerusalem from all over the world. The feast was held in the middle of the Jewish month Nisan (April). The first Passover Jesus attended in His public work brought Him from Capernaum to Jerusalem. Capernaum is the city where Christ made His home while in Galilee. Do you remember the location of Capernaum?

Lesson 6

JESUS’ EARLY WORK IN GALILEE INTRODUCTION

Hundreds of years in advance, Isaiah predicted that the people of Galilee would receive a great light. (Isaiah 9:2) Matthew 4:14-16 says that Jesus Christ fulfilled this scripture. Jesus spent more time in Galilee than anywhere else. For thirty years He lived in Galilee and now He was returning as the Messiah.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE LIFE OF CHRIST

(30 Years of Preparation)

As you already have learned, Jesus performed His first miracle in Galilee. His disciples were from Galilee. Since so much of Jesus’ life takes place in Galilee, you should make sure you know the towns and the layout of this province. Review the map on the next page.

GALILEE

Galilee is the most northern part of Israel. Note that it borders on the Sea of Galilee. Galilee is about sixty miles long by thirty miles wide. In Jesus’ day, about two million people lived there. Capernaum was the center of Jesus’ evangelistic trips. Most of Jesus’ work was done on the western shores of the Sea of Galilee.

Lesson 7

JESUS CONTINUES HIS WORK IN GALILEE

As we travel trough the life of Christ together, We hope you are allowing the lessons Jesus taught to change your life. We also hope you are drawing closer to Jesus. Because so many events took place in this ten months of Jesus’ life, you will not be looking at every single detail. All the events and the scripture have been included on a chart on the next page. You will be looking at the highlights of this period.

Jesus is in His year of popularity. Mark 3:8 lists the areas from which these people came. Locate these places on your map in Chapter one (page 9).

JESUS PREACHES ON THE MOUNTAIN

Read Matthew 5,6,7; Luke 6:17-49

Since three whole chapters of Matthew are given to this sermon, we will not be able to study it in detail. The sermon deals with what life should be like in the kingdom. In the future, Christ will set up a kingdom on earth for 1000 years. It is this future kingdom that Christ is talking about in these verses. However, there are many things in this sermon that apply to Christians today. After you read this sermon, write three lessons that you learned.

Lesson 9

JESUS’ LATER WORK IN JUDEA AND PEREA

You have now traveled with Christ through two years and eight months of His work. You will now learn about His later work in Judea and Perea. Remember that this third year of work is the year of opposition. Those who were against Christ the most were the Jewish religious leaders.

Locate Judea and Perea on map in Lesson One (page 9).

This part of Jesus’ ministry lasted for six months. He spent three months in Judea and three months in Perea.

JESUS TEACHES IN JERUSALEM

As we begin this section of Jesus’ life we find that He now begins the last lap of His race. The finish line will come six months later. Luke 9:51 says; “As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.”

“Resolutely” means Christ made up His mind that He would go to Jerusalem

and nothing would change it.

JESUS TEACHES AFTER THE FEAST Read John 9:1-10:21 These verses are divided into two sections. In John 9:1-41, Jesus heals a man who was blind at birth. In John 10:1-21, He teaches by using the illustration of a shepherd and his flock. Read John, chapter nine. This chapter shows you that even though Jesus did powerful works, the Pharisees still would not believe. This chapter would make a powerful sermon. Parts of it are almost funny as the Pharisees interview this man and his parents. 1. How did Christ heal the man’s blindness? ________________________________________

LIFE OF CHRIST 95 LESSON 11 THE RESURRECTED JESUS

Lesson 11

THE RESURRECTED JESUS

Most people like stories that have happy endings, but it seemed to most of Christ’s followers that His life ended on a sad note. He was rejected and crucified. He was placed in a heavily guarded tomb. As far as the disciples were concerned, it was over. But Sunday morning changed all of that! And even though the disciples did not understand that Jesus arose from the dead as He predicted, the disciples would never be the same! What about you? I trust this truth has filled your life and given you the desire to serve Christ.

Read the guards’ report in Matthew 28:11-15 and see how they tried to cover up what had happened.

THOSE WHO SAW CHRIST

AFTER THE RESURRECTION The Bible records the fact that many people saw the resurrected Christ. Here are some of those to whom Christ appeared. Read each of these verses.

LIFE OF CHRIST 98 LESSON 11 THE RESURRECTED JESUS

JESUS GIVES DIRECTIONS TO HIS FOLLOWERS

The eleven disciples returned to Galilee where Jesus said He would meet them. When Jesus met with them He gave them instructions that many call “The Great Commission.” Read Matthew 28:16-20; Mark 16:15-18. The main command in these verses is to make disciples of all nations. The Greek word for nations is a word that means all peoples. The world needs the resurrected Jesus. Once a person accepts Christ, he must be baptized and taught so he can become a disciple. We know that in the book of Acts these disciples were organized into local churches. 1. Is the “Great Commission” still in effect? _________________________________________

2. Are you a part of God’s program to reach all people? ________________________________

JESUS RETURNS TO HEAVEN Read Mark 16:19-20; Luke 24:50-53; Acts 1:9-12.

Christ’s return to heaven is called the ascension. (Ascend means to go up) It took place on the Mount of Olives. Jesus had been resurrected for forty days and was now ready to return to heaven. From what you read in the Scriptures, describe this event as you picture it in your own mind. ______________________________________________________________________________

LIFE OF CHRIST 99 LESSON 11 THE RESURRECTED JESUS

GOD SENDS THE HOLY SPIRIT

Read John 14:16-21. Jesus did not leave the disciples alone. He had promised earlier, that He would send the Holy Spirit. Just ten days later, the Spirit came to live inside the apostles. That same Holy Spirit indwells every true Christian today. It was the Holy Spirit who used these men to share the gospel in the book of Acts.

As you reflect back over this study, take a moment to think about what aspect of the life of Christ affected you the most. Write about it below. I trust you will never be the same, after studying the greatest life ever lived. ______________________________________________________________________________

One of the most compelling facts in favor of Jesus’ resurrection is the fact that every disciple except John died a martyr’s death.

What was the central theme of their message?

That Jesus DID raise from the dead! (Acts 2:29-32) If Christ had not been raised from the dead, why did the disciples

choose to die rather than deny it?

The disciples were eyewitnesses to the empty tomb of Jesus. They saw Jesus very ALIVE after his crucifixion. This truth was worth dying for. This truth is OUR hope!
