“For six years you shall sow your
land and gather in its yield; but
the seventh year you shall let it
rest and lie fallow, so that the
poor of your people may eat; and
what they leave the wild animals
may eat. You shall do the same
with your vineyard, and with your
olive orchard. Six days you shall
do your work, but on the seventh
day you shall rest, so that your ox
and your donkey may have relief,
and your homeborn slave and the
resident alien may be refreshed.”
Exodus 23.10-12
This month in worship and
Sunday school, we will be
focusing on the faith practice of
“Keeping Sabbath.” The practice
of Sabbath is informed by the
Genesis story of God resting on
the seventh day after laboring for
six days to create the world. A
day of rest every 7th day is one of
the Ten Commandments.
Sabbath is a time to rest from
daily work, restore energy, focus
on God and reconnect with our
spirit and to allow those who
work for us to do the same.

Palm Sunday - Including Passion Reading,
March 29 at 10:00 am
Maundy Thursday - April 2 at 7:30 pm
Our Maundy Thursday worship begins at 7:30pm,
and is a service of communion and tennebrae
which includes readings and the progressive
darkening of the sanctuary. Many members find
this the most moving worship of the church
calendar.
Easter Sunday - April 5 at 10:00 am,
followed by coffee hour and Easter Egg Hunt!
Concerts at
First Church
(Continued from page 1)
According to scripture, even
oxen and donkeys, slaves and
undocumented workers are to be
given “relief and refreshment”
every 7th day. God invites us to
learn to live in total trust,
without anxiety or stress, resting
in God’s total abundance and
provision.
Jesus criticized the
Pharisees’ legalistic attitude
about Sabbath rules, but he
modeled how to keep Sabbath
both inwardly (through prayer,
solitude, silence, and meditation)
and outwardly (through
communal ritual and acts of
justice).This month, we will
explore how Sabbath can be
more than an impractical
commandment and continue to
be a blessing in our busy lives.
In our non-stop modern lives,
we may have to re-define what it
means to “keep” Sabbath, but
carving out and protecting times
for activities that recharge,
refresh, and renew our spirits,
minds, and bodies is more
important than ever. In our
intergenerational coffee hour on
the 26th, we will share our
experiences and ideas for
keeping Sabbath (see page 5).
In the scripture passage
above, from the book of Exodus,
the idea of Sabbath is extended
to a Sabbath year, when even the
farm land and fruit trees and
vineyards are given a year of
rest. The academic and
ecclesiastical practice of
Sabbatical for faculty and clergy
comes from this Sabbath year
commandment. Among churches
in our denomination, a three
month sabbatical after five years
is the norm. My letter of call
includes a three month
sabbatical after five years of
service for the purpose of
continuing education and
spiritual renewal. My first
sabbatical was back in 2002.
This summer, two different and
very interesting continuing
education programs for clergy
are being offered that I would
like to take advantage of. When
I discussed it with the deacons,
we decided that 2015 was high
time for my second sabbatical.
I am grateful for the opportunity
this church is affording me for
spiritual renewal and
enrichment of my ministry
among you. The sabbatical will
start after Confirmation Sunday
on June 7, and I will return to
the pulpit on August 30th. While
I am away, Ellen Willert, our
Member in Discernment, will be
leading worship and providing
pastoral care. I will be writing
more about my plans in next
month’s Journal, and our head
deacon, Wayne Hileman, will be
filling in the details about how
the church will carry on in my
absence. For now, I am excited
about focusing on the weekly
Sabbath renewal that we are all
called to observe, and I look
forward to seeing you in worship
on Sunday!

2014-15 Annual Meeting - Sun, June 28
Access Health CT Access Health CT is opening a Special Enrollment Period from April 1st through April 30th, 2015 for
people who did not have health insurance in 2014 and did not obtain health insurance in 2015.
If they enroll in a health insurance policy during this Enrollment Period they can reduce or avoid the
penalties for not having health insurance in 2015. The penalty for 2015 is $325 per person ($162.50/
child) or two per cent of the family income - whichever is larger. In 2016 the penalty increases to $695
per person ($347.50 per child) or 2.5 per cent of income – whichever is larger.
Please feel free to contact me if you know of someone who does not have Health Insurance and does not
have qualifying events that would allow them to enroll for Health Insurance. If their income is slightly
above the upper limit for Husky eligibility they will be able to purchase two or three months of insur-
ance for less than the penalty.
I hope all is going well. …… Peter Armstrong (for more information call Peter at 860-921-7152)
On Wednesday, April 22, from 6:30 pm. to 7:30 p.m. in Wersebe Hall, the Washington Environmental
Council (WEC) welcomes ecological landscape designer Laura Rissolo of Land People Habitat for a
public lecture entitled, “Habitat for Pollinating Insects”. The lecture is on the ecological importance
of integrating habitat for native pollinators in our home landscapes to support a robust local food web. It
will highlight the evolutionary interrelationships of pollinators and native plants, and layout how to
provide beautiful, high-quality forage—through an endless bloom sequence— and shelter requirements
for a range of pollinators. Attendees will receive a guide to attracting pollinators to their gardens. The
lecture will be followed by a brief reception. Reservations are required. RSVP to [email protected]

Missions and Outreach - Opportunities to serve are all around us. Annie Baur (860-799-6308) or John Turner (860-868-0868), Missions Co-Chairs
Back Bay Missions
On March 8th Earl Thompson, from the First Church of Christ, Congregational (UCC), of Glastonbury
and a member of the Board of Back Bay Missions gave the sermon and made a presentation during coffee
hour. He spoke eloquently about the history of the mission and the numerous programs that it provides,
by raising money and involving volunteers. They are engaged in reconstruction of homes damaged by
storms and providing assistance and support for those in need in a community with few resources. Back
Bay Mission is a mission of the United Church of Christ (our denomination) and is a mission that our
church here in Washington has supported with annual donations funded by a portion of your annual
pledge. Some members of our church present that day would like to think about getting a small group
together to travel to Biloxi and lend a hand as a volunteer team. Please speak with Annie or John if you
are interested in hearing more about this mission or about a trip.
New Milford Food Bank
Lately, donations to the New Milford Food Bank, which broke records a couple of months ago, have
been down slights. We plan to draw attention once again to this opportunity to make a difference to the
poorest among us. As the weather gets warmer, please remember the need for food and personal care
supplies does not lessen or go away.
One Great Hour of Sharing
Our annual One Great Hour of Sharing offering will be taken on Sunday, April 26.
Members will receive a mailing later in the month as a reminder and will include more
information about this important fund that serves both domestic and global missions to
empower, provide water, supply food, and give relief from disasters.
Loaves and Fishes
There is no recent news of the attempts for Loaves and Fishes to find a new home, although there is
some optimism in the air.
Our next Loaves and Fishes dinner hosting is scheduled for Thursday, April 30th. Sign-up sheets are
on the wall in Wersebe Hall so that volunteers can plan to help on that date with this important work –
which is also fun.
New Milford Homeless Shelter
Two members of your church have enjoyed volunteering (one night every few weeks). It is not
demanding and the experience provides a fascinating window on a world most of us can otherwise not
imagine.
Wheels Program
One of the people who volunteers at the shelter has also been a driver for the Wheels Program which
takes elderly or physically challenged local people to appointments with hospitals and doctors. If you
have time and are interested in how you can help, please contact John Turner.
Community Services in Washington
John and Annie met with Samantha Sommerer, the new Community Services Specialist for
Washington, on her first day in the new space on the third floor of the Town Hall. She is available to all
Washington residents for services, including energy assistance, SNAP applications, state health
insurance applications and job searching. There is a poster on the bulletin board near the Parish House
entrance with her number and hours. Please pass on this information to anyone you know who may
benefit from assistance of this kind. There are different income thresholds so do inquire if in need.

April 26th with activities to be announced prior to the meeting.
The First Congregational Church of Washington's Youth Group is for grades 6-12 and all are welcome!
Our regular meetings are on the last Sunday of every month from 5-7 pm at the Parish House. Every
meeting involves a group discussion focusing on the current month's faith practice, food, games, and
much more. If you have any questions, please contact Emelie Samuelson (203-405-6710), or via email at

Intergenerational Activity on April 26
RECYCLE THOSE GREETING CARDS!
Under the direction of Beth Lovallo, our Sunday School is continuing to support St. Jude's Ranch for
Children by processing and sending them Christmas card fronts to be repurposed to new cards.
Please save your card fronts that do not have writing on the back and bring them in to
church or send/ drop them off to the church office during the week. There is a permanent
bin, decorated by the children, set up to receive these in the Parish House foyer.
Join us for another intergenerational activity on April 26! This month we are focused on “Keeping
Sabbath”. We will spend our first couple of minutes together doing some FUN team building
activities! Then, we will brainstorm together to develop ideas for how to “Keep Sabbath” and what that
means to each of us. Just imagine what we can learn from each other! We can build on ideas and even
find a “Keeping Sabbath” partner to support you in your commitment going forward. Join in the fun
during coffee hour and try it.. you might like it!

Star Island Presentation on
Sunday, April 19 at 11 am (during coffee hour)
Star Island is a place to vacation with a
purpose while enjoying the community, experiences and
breathtaking views only found on New England’s unique
summer island.
A guest speaker will join us for a slide show and
presentation about Star Island, easy to get to off New
Hampshire’s coast. In this beautiful place individuals,
couples and families have a chance to learn about matters
of consequence, engage in spiritual renewal and explore
the world as it might ideally be removed from the
constraints of mainland life. Plan to stick around after
the service for some refreshments and information about
a great place to get away this summer.

EGG-STRA FACTS!
• Although Easter eggs were once part of pagan spring festivals, they’ve become Christian symbols of new life. A
cracked-open shell also represents Jesus’ empty tomb on Easter morning.
• In medieval times, churches held “egg-throwing” festivals. The priest threw a hard-boiled egg toward the choir
boys, who tossed it back and forth. When the clock struck 12, whoever was holding the egg got to keep it.
• In some European countries, children go from house to house to collect Easter eggs.
• The tallest chocolate Easter egg ever produced w

!!!GREEN FAIR!!!
(Saturday, July 11)
Preparations for the Green Fair are underway. That means WE NEED YOUR HELP! At this
stage of the game we are looking for 2 things, 1) Time commitments and 2) STUFF!
What kind of time commitment? Well, anything you can give. Saying you are too busy is not acceptable. We all are busy but we must find the time to make the 2015 edition
another great fair. See Karen in the church office for a list of duties. This list is also available on
the website under “Resource Center/ Green Fair”.
What kind of stuff? Again, anything you can part with, for the most part. Garden items - furniture, nice garden decorations, planters, garden tools in good condition, are always
popular.
We need items for:
• NICE: White Elephant (Tag Sale)
• NICER: Boutique
• REALLY NICE: Live Auction.
It is easiest to list what we won’t take:
• We won’t take anything broken.
• We will take furniture but we won’t take any mattresses nor any upholstered furniture.
• We also don’t like electronics because they tend to be outdated and no one wants to buy
obsolete electronics. Exceptions might be something that has historic value as an
antique. And I don’t mean an 8 track player!
Other items needed:
• BOOKS: Used (or new) in good condition (no textbooks)
• LADIES ACCESSORIES: nice scarves, good jewelry and handbags
• KID’s SPORTS EQUIPMENT, TOYS, GAMES
• THINK ABOUT…. What you can make for the BAKED GOODS BOOTH or what you
might be able to pot nicely for the PLANT BOOTH.
Items you are considering donating can be brought to the church during regular office
hours. If the item is large and needs transportation or if you have a question whether we
will accept the item, please call the church office (860-868-0569)
or send an email to: [email protected]
Whoever you are, and wherever you are on your life’s journey, you are welcome.

POSTMASTER: ADDRESS CORRECTION REQUESTED
DATED MATERIAL—PLEASE EXPEDITE DELIVERY
A Prayer for New Life - from Illuminata by Marianne Williamson
Dear God,
Please take my past and my future.
Transform them both through the miracle of Your power into energies of love and love only.
May I know the present as You would have me see it.
May I see only You in everyone and everything that I might be dazzled by the light, lifted
up by the light, given joy by the light, and made new by the light.
Release me from my past and deliver me to my future.
In You I trust; nothing else is real.
In you I have faith; nothing else has power.
And so it is that I am where I belong, and I shall strive for nothing.
I am at home; may I feel this and be at peace.
For I would rob myself no longer through my vain imaginings and tormented thoughts.
You are my life.
You are hear and now, Amen.
