Theoretical Framework

Theoretical Framework presents Review of Related Literature and Studies, Conceptual Framework and Operational Definition of Terms.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This part of the study puts together all relevant theories and concepts that can be useful in the identification of the solution to the presented problems and its effects from the previous chapter. This presents all the requirements needed in order to develop the most appropriate answer to the problems.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

Another purpose of Review of Related Literature and Studies is to provide information about the identified requirements for the study. Requirements are itemized according to how relevant it is to the problem and are presented topic by topic.

Review of Related Literature and StudiesIn order to write the discussion of a related literature,

the researcher must provide conceptual definitions of the topic that are usually from electronic sources, books, journals and other materials. These materials must be as recent as possible, objective, relevant, genuine, valid and reliable. The paraphrased discussions from these materials should be cited properly. Also, the relevance of the selected topic should be discussed justifying the reason why it plays an important role as part of the solution to the problem. Lastly, literatures that prove that the selected topic can be integrated to the solution may be included, if available.

Review of Related Literature and StudiesWriting related studies, however, usually is

discussing theses, dissertations and/or studies that are similar, related and relevant to the study. These studies appear depending on their relevance to the study.

Synthesis usually explains the reason why featured literatures and studies are related and compares and contrasts them to the current study.

Review of Related Literature and StudiesSteps on writing RRLS:Identify keywords related to your research topicCreate an outline of topicsKnow what kind of material needed and where it

can be foundBegin reading topic with general books

(conceptual definition)Consult popular magazines to find background on

the topic (application)Cite references, prepare notes and paraphraseWrite the synthesis

Review of Related Literature and StudiesCitations:

Magno (2003) stressed that “Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is strongly puching for National ID System Act as a high priority.”

Ayers (1994) claims that dewatering improves waste handling and reducing the volume of garbage to be incinerated

Review of Related Literature and StudiesCitations:

According to Strasser, et. al. (1981), men and boys are involved more than two-thirds of the accidental deaths.

Australian universities tend to become research-oriented institutions since research publications are considered to be main criteria for recruitment and promotion of academics (Oxenford, et. al., 1995)

Diagrams (DFD, Flowchart, Schematic, etc.) should be contained in a single page and labels should be readable/legible as much as possible

Conceptual Model of the Study

This part is a pictorial representation of the identified concepts of the study. A modified Input-Process-Output diagram is used to present the variables included in the study. A brief discussion about the Conceptual Model follows after the diagram.

Conceptual Model of the StudyThe diagram is usually composed of four blocks

namely Input, Process, Output and Evaluation blocks. Input block includes Knowledge, Software and Hardware requirements. Process block contains the most appropriate Software Engineering/Engineering process and methods to use for the development of the study. The Output block presents the solution, usually the research project itself, derived from the requirements and process. Evaluation block assesses the Output and determines if the solution or the project is acceptable in compliance with the set objectives.
