We are entering the
“thankful” time of year. Does
your family’s Thanksgiving
tradition include the sharing of
blessings around the table? In
Paul Koch’s November 4
sermon, the sharing of
blessings and “A Eucharist Thanksgiving” took many
forms, in many places. At Broadway, our Thanksgiving
communions may also be shared and felt in many ways
– from the taking of the sacrament in our Sanctuary to
the hole-y donuts we share in Fellowship Hall. We are
blessed by both, and we are thankful!
When Rick Frost and Kim Ryan returned to the
Broadway pulpit on October 28, they introduced the
idea of writing letters of gratitude and love to those who
are important in your life. Why not write a letter of love
and gratitude to Broadway, as an important part of your
life? In November, the sermon series will focus on the
grateful heart in each of us. What are you blessed to
be a part of, to see, to experience? We ask that you
take a moment and write a ‘love letter’ to Broadway and
your church family. What ministry or worship has
captured your heart and feeds your soul? Are you
blessed with a wonderful small
group? How did the Broadway
Spirit show itself in your life?
Our letters of gratitude will be
shared in the Narthex each
Sunday. You can sign your name
in letters a thousand feet high, or remain anonymous.
Hand-written or typed, snail-mailed or to a minister’s in-
box, send them! But we want to know, how has
Broadway been a blessing to you?
It is the season of gratitude – share your grateful
heart with your family.
With A Thankful Heart...
Write Your Letter of Gratitude for Broadway’s Ministries
BROADWAY MINISTRIES PAGE TWO
A Thank You Note from Nick...
The author and theologian Diana Butler Bass in
her book Grateful pens the words;
“With the morning birdsong, My heart echoes thank
you.
With the rustling sounds in the kitchen, My heart
echoes thank you.
With the early noise of the suburbs, My heart echoes
thank you.
With the awakening words of day, I add my voice and
say thank you.”
I am personally thankful for all the voices that have
echoed with thank you’s throughout October. From
the first voices of Bill & Narka Ryan, who thanked us
with tireless gratitude even after driving all the way
from their home in Baltimore Maryland, - to the soft
whispers of gratefulness spoken by Kim as she, Rick
and I stood at the invitation moment in the final
worship of our 60th celebration month; it was a whole
month of gratitude put on display!
Thanks to the hardworking members of 60th
committee co-chaired by Jack & Darlene Miles!
Clearly it was something that God prepared ahead for
us to experience at a much needed time in our
congregational life. Throughout it and with God’s
grace and abundance we even added 5 new
members!
If we allow it the energy and enthusiasm we have
experienced through the heritage month will become
a habit, a regular part of how we respond to God’s
call to be part of this church. We can continue to allow
the Broadway Spirit to surprise us, elicit a strong
emotional response, and to be a steadying
companion incorporated into the daily story of our
lives. So church, I urge you to choose gratitude, not
just for October or November, but as a way of life.
There is a discipline many of you are likely to be
familiar with called the Examine which some
Christians use to center themselves each day. I invite
you to add, into your daily practices, these five simple
steps:
1. Become aware of God’s presence.
2. Review the day with gratitude.
3. Pay close attention to your emotions.
4. Choose one feature of the day and pray for it.
Look forward to tomorrow.
This need not be a long or involved process. End
your day, noticing, reviewing and praying for all that
God has already done in your life, in our midst, and
for this community of faith we call Broadway Christian
Church. Then take our invitation to write your own
“Dear Church Family” love letter and when you do
this, you can even check off one of the “8 keys of
discipleship - daily prayer.”
This way of life is already at work here, guiding the
worthy and good work of our transitional minister
search committee, our lay leadership, and our staff.
We are all diligently at work discerning who and what
God is calling us to become and how we can help to
shape, direct, and become that very vision.
I am so honored to be serving with and alongside
each and every one of you. We need all of us to
continue to cultivate our awareness and to see our
gifts more often with clearer and more consistent
vision. From our Board Chair, to our Executive
Committee, to our Board, to our staff, to our
members, each needs to be invested in seeing
Broadway flourish not just now, but for the next 60+
years!

PAGE 3 THE SECOND FRONT
Many of you know the story of
how Broadway came to be the
home for the Myanmar Christian
Fellowship Church, which meets in
the Loft every Sunday morning at
11:30, after an hour of Sunday
School in our lower level
classrooms. The church almost
literally grew in our Community
Garden.
An immigrant couple from
Burma, Sarah and Zo, had become the leaders of the local
Burmese refugee community. Sarah worked with Don Day
to assign plots for Burmese gardeners (and still does).
After working with Don on the Garden project for two years,
Sarah and Zo approached Broadway about ‘nesting’ their
growing Burmese Christian house church. The details were
worked out, and the church has continued to use our space
for worship and Christian Education.
For almost seven years, the Burmese have called
Broadway home. Since Broadway is our home, too – what
better time than Thanksgiving to get the families together?
On Sunday, November 18,
at 5:00 p.m., Mission and
Outreach Ministry will host
a Friends-Giving Potluck
Supper in Fellowship Hall.
MOM will provide the
turkey, ham and rolls –
and we ask that you bring
a side dish or dessert to
share. Forms have been
placed in all church
mailboxes, and we ask
that you respond by Thursday, November 15. Forms can
be dropped in the offering tray on Sunday or left in the
office mailbox.
Our Friends-Giving will celebrate our continued
partnership with Myanmar Christian Fellowship and the
church’s newly called minister. MOM hopes that you and
your family will join us for a great meal and an opportunity
to make new friends!
A Celebration of Friends-Giving with Our Burmese Congregation
In worship bulletins this Sunday,
November 11, you will find a brief survey
on Broadway’s adult mission trips. Mission
and Outreach Ministry is asking for you
help to discern the direction of our adult
mission ministry for 2019. For the past
nine years, Broadway has focused on
international mission to El Salvador. This
is certainly still an option for the 2019 trip,
however, MOM would like to have
members’ input before making a final decision. There
have been several major natural disasters in the United
States in recent months, and Disciples Volunteering is
considering long-term
recovery mission stations for
both the Florida Panhandle
region and the Carolinas.
Thank you for your help,
as MOM works to provide
meaningful mission trips that
make a positive impact on
communities and individuals .
If you have any questions, please contact Debby at
445.5312 or [email protected].
2019 Adult Mission Trip—Where Would You Like to Go?
Our Partner in Education at the
Center for Early Learning – North
(CELN) is the home for three
distinct educational programs for
Columbia Public Schools. The
CELN facility house the Pre-
School Special Education
classrooms, the Parents As
Teachers staff, and is the home for several Title I Pre-
School classrooms, as well at the Title 1 program
administrator. In other words, there are a lot of hungry
teachers in the building when it is time for parent-teacher
conferences!
Since we are a church blessed with many wonderful
cooks, it seemed only natural that we should provide a
meal or two for these famished educators! On Monday,
November 12, and Tuesday, November 13, members of
Mission and Outreach Ministry (MOM) will provide soup
and salad (Monday) and a taco bar (Tuesday). And the
teachers would appreciate cookies and other desserts to
snack on during a break!
If you would like to help with the
meals, please contact Debby at
445.5312 by this Sunday,
November 11. You can simply
drop of your contribution to the
meal or help MOM transport the
food to CELN. We hope to have enough soup and taco
fixings’ for at least 75 teachers and staff.
Box Top Update!
Thank you to Karen Rawlings, who has provided a
collection box for our Box Tops for Education collection.
You can drop off your Box Tops at the Narthex Welcome
Center any Sunday! Those Box Tops will be redeemed
for needed supplies and equipment at CELN.

Our November PIE Project: Feeding Our Teachers During A Long Day
It is early to discuss Advent
ministries, but Broadway’s Mission
and Outreach Ministry team is
already at work on this year’s Advent
ministry buffet of options!
Sign-ups to sponsor a Voluntary
Action Center Christmas basket
began last Sunday and will continue
until November 18. You, your family,
your small group or your Sunday
School class can provide Christmas gifts for a family, elderly
person or disabled person. You can designate the size of the
family you can sponsor, and can also sponsor multiple single
adults. Sponsors will receive their information
directly from Voluntary Action Center in the
next few weeks.
The Tree of Hope will begin on November
18 in Fellowship Hall. The Tree of Hope will
be decorated with cards that contain the
wishes and needs of local children in need.
Names are gathered from Coyote Hill, local
schools and area agencies that provide
ongoing support for children and families. To
sponsor a child, simply choose a card, sign it out in the log
and do your shopping! Gifts will need to be returned to
Broadway by Sunday, December 9.

C A L E N D A R In a wacky moment
during a Youth Group
planning session, it was
decided that Broadway’s
annual Youth Make A

of become Youth Making
A Difference Differently
Day!
OK just kidding! The youth and their leaders are always
looking for ways to make things new and different, so that is how
our Youth Make A Difference Day on Sunday, moved to Saturday,
November 10!
All else has remained the same—same energetic young
people with a willingness to serve our Broadway family, same
guidance from our youth leadership, and almost certainly at this
time of year—same acres of leaves to rake and bag! If you have
not yet contacted Nick about YMDD, and have few weeks to pull
or leaves to bag—time is definitely running out! Contact Nick at

can be added to the list.

When word reached the Broadway
family that David Dalton’s father had
passed to glory after living 101 years
among his friends, family and
community – it did not take long for the
Dalton’s doorbell to ring. Standing at
the threshold was Patsy’s partner in
CareLink ministry, Linda Poehlmann,
holding a container of muffins,
homemade apple butter, and, of course,
a fresh mum. It was the act of a
compassionate and caring friend, and it
shines a bright light on the ministry and small acts of
kindness done by CareLink volunteers for members of the
Broadway family every day.
Small acts of kindness are often chores that many of
us do for ourselves routinely. But when those routine
chores, like getting the Christmas tree out of the closet or
changing a light bulb in a ceiling fixture, become physically
impossible – CareLink’s Handy Helpers are there. When
members can no longer live independently, CareLink’s
Care Facility volunteers step in to spend time and share
stories with members. Members who are recovering from
an illness might receive a visit from the Casserole
Committee, taking one worry ‘off the plate,’ and providing
a hot meal for a family. And sometimes, CareLink is a
phone call or card, sometimes just checking in, or
sometimes sharing in times of celebration or of sorrow.
There are many other ways that CareLink lives by its
motto, “church family caring for church family.” From
Prayer Shawls to Spirited Singers, these Broadway friends
share their compassion with Broadway members and
friends they may know – or not. It is the acts of kindness
and caring that define the CareLink ministry and its
volunteers.
And the old saying that “what goes
around, comes around”? Patsy and
David are good examples of that old truth.
Enjoy the apple butter and muffins, Patsy
and David – CareLink’s latest recipients of
CareLink compassion.
CareLink Ministry News
For more than 15 years,
Ethel Okker visited Broadway
members who live in local care
facilities, updating them on
church news and activities,
listening to their stories and
sharing her own, and
sometimes just holding hands.
Her ministry predates
Carelink—it was a loving
service to our homebound.
Ethel has retired from
visiting care facilities, but her
ministry will continue. Joyce Wood Harter will now be the
caring presence for our members in care facilities. Joyce,
who like Ethel, is a retired nurse, will make regular visits to
our homebound—and along with our Broadway ministers,
will take the caring spirit of Broadway to our members who
can no longer join us in church.

What a Heritage Month!
A little over a year ago I
was reminded that in October
2018, Broadway Christian
Church will be 60 years old.
So, we need to get our whole
church involved, right? That
happened.
The church was divided
up into areas and various
groups worked hard to make us shine both inside and out.
Our history was brought into better focus with charter
members and displays along the wall by the loft. We recalled
the artistic gifts of our members in weaving, painting,
woodwork and writing by making them available to members
today (most will remain on exhibit until Advent). The church
was decorated and ready for a special event on October 7
which is still receiving accolades. Bill Stuart Ryan, the 30
year old first pastor of Broadway gave our message 60 years
after his first one. Chefs from our congregation prepared a
feast from the 50th anniversary
cookbook. A week later we heard the
voice of Don Lanier and Ken Watson
return, then Jacob Thorne with Rick
Frost and Kim Ryan presenting a
special message tailored for Broadway
each week.
I personally enjoyed the atmosphere,
familiar voices from the pulpit, music,
food, fellowship and friends so much
that I’m looking forward to the 70th anniversary!
What a month! Such things don’t just happen and our
gratitude and appreciation goes to each person who cleaned,
organized, researched, displayed, set up, put away, cooked,
sang, played, decorated and so much more. There are many
to thank and two are very special: Jack and Darlene Miles,
Co-chairs of the 60th Anniversary Celebration Committee.
Thanks for the Celebration, Broadway!

Looking Back and Moving Forward at Broadway
This is a desperate plea for some of you
younger folks to step forward and volunteer
to drive the church bus. Driving the bus is
easy. The most difficult part is helping
people with walkers and wheelchairs on and
off the bus. Last Sunday I was scheduled to
transport five people from the far north side
of Columbia and two more from the south side. For
some of them, this would mean a 2 1/2 hour bus ride. If
we had more drivers, we could use both busses and
shorten the ride. Fortunately, I was able to recruit
someone who lives on the south side to pick up those
two in their car. A huge thank you to Jane and Rick
Maguire for this assistance! I am a 78-year-old lady
with my own physical limitations driving the bus when
some people think I should be home in
my rocking chair! No one could ride the
bus to Rocheport last Saturday evening
because no driver was available. Already
a request has gone out for a driver for
next Sunday. So, PLEASE, young
fellows and gals, get your class E license
and volunteer to drive the bus once in a while. If we
have sufficient driver volunteers, no one would need to
drive more than once every four to six weeks. This is a
wonderful ministry for folks who want to come to church
but lack transportation. Please consider becoming a
part of it. My rocking chair is calling!

The Interim Transitional Minister Search Committee
has met several times since their appointment two
months ago. Step one was to listen to you, for which
we appreciate some 90 of our members expressing
their thoughts about our health as a congregation and
the direction we need to take. Two points emerged
most often: we desire increased fellowship
opportunities and more efficient methods of
communication. Each of the four sessions agreed that
as a congregation we have no issues then the rest of
the hour was usually spent discussing specific
concerns.
Step two was to complete the congregational
profile, a document that will inform candidates for both
the Transitional and “Settled” pastor what Broadway is
all about. It addresses demographics, worship styles,
personal qualities sought in a candidate, building
space capacity , mission work, past clergy and much
more.
Step three is to review interest and abilities of clergy
responding to our transitional minister call to find the
person that can help us move into the future. After
phone calls, visits and other contacts both by the
committee and those responding to the call, the
committee will select one person to go forward.
Final selection is defined by our bylaws that the search
committee will present one candidate to the board for
approval and assuming approval is given, the
congregation will vote to call this person for the
Transitional Ministry.
We have received encouragements to forego the
transitional minister and begin the search for our next
“settled” (a new term for me) pastor. The health and
input of our congregation could make this possible.
From the advice and counsel received from others
experienced in such a decision, the Transitional
Minister trained in this type of call can provide distinct
advantages for us. Since August, our leadership
(officers, executive committee, board, clergy) have
been re-examining our governance structure, pastoral
model, congregational health, replies from members,
spiritual growth, mission, finance and other
components. There are opportunities for nurturing the
vitality of our future and by the time we call our
“settled” minister next year, I believe that our
transitional minister will have helped us shape the path
to another 60 years of a vibrant Broadway Spirit.
Thank you, Broadway members, for being part of
the body of Christ in our world,
John

Broadway’s Heritage Month Was A Month to Remember
Some might think that the Boston Red Socks
had the best October ever, but we at Broadway
would beg to differ! From our October 7
Homecoming Sunday with Broadway’s founding
minister, Rev. William Ryan—to the memorable
reunion of Rick Frost and Kim Ryan on October
28—Broadway members and friends had a month of
memorable Sundays! Thank you to Bill, Rick and
