IDAHO ASSOCATION ANNUAL MEETING-CHALLIS, IDAHO

The Idaho Association of UCC/Congregational Churches annual meeting, was held in

Challis, Idaho, over the weekend of September 23rd and 24th. Most of the meeting was held

at the Living Waters Ranch, Conference and Retreat Center. This Center is located in a

beautiful area, about 5 miles west of Challis.

There were 39 delegates in attendance, representing 7 of our Churches in ourconference. Representing Wright Church were Jack and Joan Wenske, Janice Aagaard, Carl

Van Slyke, and Mike Black. In attendance also, was our Conference Minister Walter John

Boris, and Janet Scott, our Conference Moderator.

We had a lively business meeting, at which we discussed the following items.

• Proposed a new and revised set of Bylaws. After much discussion, this item

was tabled, and will be rewritten by a new task force and presented at ournext meeting.

• Proposed an updated and revised Articles of Incorporation. This proposal wasfinally approved after some revisions.

• Proposed adding a position of Secretary to the Idaho Association Board. Thiswill be deferred to the next annual meeting.

• Nominated and elected Chi Morgan, from our Nampa Church, to the

Moderator Elect position. He will replace Jay Sanderson, who resigned due tohealth reasons.

• Mike Black, gave us some information about the merger of the United ChurchConference in Montana with the Disciples of Christ churches. They mergedtheir conference offices, but will keep each of their own identities.

• The next annual meeting will be held at our Church in McCall, Idaho. This will

coincide with their 100 year celebration.

After our Business meeting, we adjourned to the Challis Church, where we had aworship service.

Notes From The Board

With wisdom and love, Dear God, we your people will use the giftsyou have provided to our Church for your glory. In his Stewardshipthought this past Sunday, Rev. Mike Black framed our Church'sphilosophy on the use of our financial resources.

Finances and budgets are the least glamorous activities of Churchlife, yet a very necessary activity. Soon we will begin our StewardshipCampaign and Budget Development for 2012. Our Church is at acritical point in our finances. We are all aware of the financialdifficulties many institutions have had over the past few years, andindeed many families have been affected by the same issues. YourChurch is )[10 different.

Your Church Board has sought to be careful with our expensesand has reduced our budget significantly over the past few years.Despite our best efforts, the expense of operating our Church hasexceeded our income. We have been able to fund our shortfall withChurch reserves; including amounts held in special funds, however weare now exhausting our reserves. Our Church no longer has thefinancial reserves to cover the difference between expenses and income.

Our Church has been very careful not to incur debt, our only debtbeing the building loan of $31,669. We do have $10,078 in anendowmen.t fund. Thanks to your gifts, the shortfall between incomeand expense is approximately $1000 per month. However, month aftermonth, over the years this has depleted our reserves.

As we plan our budget for 2012, we will review each line item andwork to further reduce the expenses of operating our Church. We inviteany ideas, comments, or suggestions. In the meantime we prayerfullyask each of you, as you are able, to give just a little more of yourfinancial resources, to support your Church.

Respectfully Submitted,Will Patterson, Board Chair

STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE from Carl Van Slyke

"Count Yourself Blessed" Luke 6:38 is the theme of this year's stewardshipemphasis month. This year's month of special stewardship moments will beginon Sunday, October 9 and will conclude on Sunday, November 6, commitmentSunday. Each Sunday your Stewardship Committee will be bringing a special

message to you. You will not want to miss a Sunday.

The theme for each Sunday is as follows:

October 9 "Generous Women of the Bible"

October 16 "God's Guarantee"

October 23 "An Inconvenient Truth"

October 30 "Wealth and Wisdom"

"Count Yourself Blessed"---what a theme. I looked up the word "blessed" in thedictionary. There are several slants to its meaning. Blessed: made sacred,

consecrated; worthy of respect; enjoying happiness, fortunate; andbringing happiness.

What a powerful theme and message for each one of us to consider as wemake our decision about our financial commitment to the General Fund ofWright Congregational Church. We may have some tough and creative

decisions to make in our budgeting for 2012. We do thank you for your supportas we work to make the budget goals we set for 2011.

May these thoughts and the themes that are presented each Sunday help youdecide your financial commitment to Wright Congregational Church for 2012.

A story from your Global Ministries I i~SlTOB E R

"Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me."JOHN 14:1

Living and Learningin a Troubled World

lBskudar American Academy in Uskudar, Turkey is an historicmission school founded by missionaries in 1873 during theOttoman Empire. Today it is a secular private school that strivesto prepare students for a rapidly changing multicultural, multilingual, and religiously diverse world. Missionary AlisonStendahl has been working with the school for a number of years. She reflects: any school is a subset of its surrounding world, whereits diverse community members learn to understand one another even in the faceof conflict and disagreement. When a community truly and sincerely cares for itsmembers, it can be a nurturing place where one should feel safe. Turkey bordersa region caught up in strong social and political forces. The more the regiondestabilizes, the greater the effects on Turkey as it braces itself for an influx ofrefugees. We are particularly aware of how immense social pressure can eventuallyfocus people on their differences rather than their commonalities. We focus on thosewho strive to build bridges of understanding rather than to construct walls of fear.

Uskudar American Academy has one of the most respected Model United Nationsconferences where 500 high school students from various countries come togetherin a forum to seriously examine the major issues facing this geographic region.Dedicated to preparing students for an increasingly intertwined and complex world,Uskudar American has a strong vision for the future and is also a supportive andcaring community. Though the vast number of teachers and students are Muslim, several are also from Christian and Jewish backgrounds. Together this diversecommunity models how a common vision can give its members energy to strive fora better and more positive future.

We pray for students, who through social service projects, do what they can to helpthose who have needs beyond their imagining. We pray for teachers who work withthe youth, as they explore what it truly means to be a global citizen in to day's world.

Alison Stendahl serves the Near East Mission in Istanbul. She works as academic deanand math teacher at Uskudar American Academy.
