HAPPY nEW YEAR to all! I personally feel that 2016 was a productive year for

all areas of the school organization. The district continues to focus on improving student achievement in the entire PK-12 organization. The teaching staff is in the fourth year of the Quality Compensation Program, which has

proven to be effective. The teachers meet in their Professional learning Communities (PlCs) for 45 minutes one day each week. The focus of the PlCs is to study data to understand how students are doing academically and how teachers can support the students to continue to improve achievement. The PlCs are also an avenue for positive professional development to take place for the teaching staff. I personally want to thank the School Board and the Education Minnesota Wrenshall teacher’s union for supporting this initiative. The Quality Compensation Program would not be possible without the support of these two entities and administration working well together.

The district has been challenged with an infl ux of new students this school year. There have been many program adjustments made as a result. In addition, two December retirements will require new hires. After many years of service to the district, fourth grade

HEllo WREnSHAll CoMMUnITY! I hope this issue of images fi nds you doing well and

ready for the new Year. The days are short and the sunshine is limited. The light of being around ones we care about can make up for the absence of daylight during this illumination challenged season. As we slowly get back to normal from the holiday season, things tend to

get pretty monotonous in the dead of January and February. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is very prevalent in northern Minnesota. Some of us may refer to this as “the winter blues” — but it can be much more serious for others. The mayo clinic explains SAD: “Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that’s related to changes in seasons — SAD begins and ends at about the same times every year. If you’re like most people with SAD, your symptoms start in the fall and continue into the winter months, sapping your energy and making you feel moody. less often, SAD causes depression in the spring or early summer.”

If you or anyone you know is experiencing these symptoms and it seems to happen like clock work every year please contact your family physician or mental health care provider to discuss the risks and options for treatment. Ignoring these symptoms will not help it go away, but learning more about this disorder and arming yourself with knowledge and insight can help you feel empowered. light therapy and medication are common ways to treat SAD, but getting out and getting active can also help limit the symptoms. Getting out and active is important for everyone this season. Don’t let the season defi ne your activity level, but rather let your activities defi ne the season.

If you or anyone you know is struggling with anything from household fi nances to possible mental health barriers, please feel free to contact me at the information listed below and I would be happy to support you in making a plan. Remember, you’re not being weak by addressing mental health issues, but it does take strength to do so! Enjoy the rest of winter the best you can!Mike Schmidt, lSW 218-428-2313 [email protected]

GREETInGS FRoM the Guidance Offi ce! As we take longer strides into quarter two, it is

important for students to remember to stay focused during this time as there are lengthy school breaks and kids are often surprised at how quickly the end of the fi rst semester arrives. organization and prioritizing are of utmost importance to reach expected success. NOTE TO SENIORS:

This is a very exciting, yet stressful time for seniors. Much is expected in the next couple months, aside from the usual coursework, athletics and activities. I have been meeting with seniors to double check graduation credits and help sketch out expectations with respect to their postsecondary plans. I would like to extend an invitation to any and all parents/guardians who would like to schedule a meeting to discuss such plans as well.IMPORTANT THINGS FOR SENIORS TO KEEP IN MIND MOVING FORWARD:• Begin to fi nalize postsecondary choices.• Take fi nal tours of colleges or other

postsecondary schools. If no tour is available, please speak with Mr. Holter about arranging a visit from that school’s representative.

• next available ACT test is February 11th. Come to the guidance offi ce or go to www.actstudent.org to register and for registration deadlines.

• Contact anybody who might need to write you a letter of recommendation for college or scholarship applications. Remember to give them written information about yourself that they might not already know regarding employment, volunteer work, academics, athletics, honors, awards, special talents — anything that will aid in the advocating process.

corner• Finalize college essays.• Free Application for Federal Student Aid

(FAFSA) UPDATE: There are two exciting changes that came to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) process this year. You can fi le your 2017-18 FAFSA as early as Oct. 1, 2016, rather than beginning on Jan. 1, 2017. The earlier submission date will be a permanent change, enabling you to complete and submit a FAFSA as early as october 1 every year. Also, you’ll use earlier income and tax information. Beginning with the 2017-18 FAFSA, you’ll be required to report income and tax info from an earlier tax year (prior-prior year). For example, on the 2017-18 FAFSA, you – and your parent(s), as appropriate – will report your 2015 income and tax info, rather than your 2016 income and tax info.

• Get postsecondary applications to Mr. Holter at least a week before the deadlines so they can be completed and sent on time.

• Meet with Mr. Holter to fi ne-tune personal timelines.

• Most importantly — stay focused on current courses and grades! AlSo, TAKE CARE oF YoURSElF by getting enough sleep, eating regular, balanced meals, and exercising on a daily basis.

IMPORTANT THINGS FOR JUNIORS TO KEEP IN MIND MOVING FORWARD:• ASVAB testing session: All Juniors will be

participating in the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery in March (specifi c date TBD). The ASVAB is an aptitude test consisting of eight short sections that help you identify your skills in the following areas: General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Mathematics Knowledge, Electronics Information, Auto and Shop Information, and Mechanical Comprehension. An interest inventory is included that will give results used to fi nd careers that match interests. This is being administered to aid students in exploring occupations, which will help in discovering typical tasks, work environments, entrance requirements, and employment opportunities to assist in deciding on career fi elds or occupations that suit interests and abilities.

• ACT testing session: Mn state law requires districts to offer a nationally recognized college entrance exam during the school day to grade 11 students. February 28, 2017 is the established testing date on which all Juniors will be given the opportunity to participate at no charge. Further details will be made available closer to the testing date.

As always, I encourage all students and their parents/guardians to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have at any point. I can be reached by phone: (218) 384-4274 x1110, or email: [email protected]. I am also available for meetings by request.

Minnesota. This recycling center project is one such project. Carlton County Zoning would like to thank the Carlton County Commissioners, County Maintenance, Blackhoof Township, and Wrenshall School for making this project possible.

Wrenshall School is also participating in the Green Schools Project, Carlton County’s school recycling and waste reduction grant program. The Green Schools Project, which was created in 2015, is focused on increasing school recycling rates and decreasing the amount of waste schools produce. Each school who applies can get up to $2,000 in funding. This money comes from SCoRE (Select Committee

Green cornercontinued from front page

on Recycling and the Environment) funds. SCoRE is funded through taxes on our waste.

Carlton County received additional SCoRE funds in 2014. Heather Cunningham, Carlton County Zoning and Environmental Services Administrator, comments on how the funds are being spent: “Starting in 2014, additional SCoRE funds were allocated annually to every county to improve recycling rates throughout the state. In Carlton County, these additional funds are used for three programs. The funds are used to increase the annual operating grant to each of the five staffed recycling centers. This resulted in an increase in the hours each of the sheds are open for recycling. The additional funds are also allocated to the new Green Schools Project. The program was developed and implemented by Minnesota GreenCorps members. lastly, the additional funds are being used to replace aging and undersized unstaffed recycling sheds located in the county.”

During the first year of the Green Schools Project, Wrenshall used the grant to purchase 37 recycling bin kits for each classroom in order to create a more consistent recycling program. Each bin kit is clearly labeled. Before Wrenshall participated in the Green Schools Project, they worked to change their waste management and collection practices, resulting in an increase of 60% in recyclable material collected!

The staff and students at Wrenshall are doing a great job tackling a variety of environmental issues in the community. Participating in the Green Schools Project, funded through SCoRE, has increased Wrenshall’s recycling numbers, and their knowledge on recycling and waste reduction in the school. Their YES! team is also doing great things in the environmental realm. Whether it’s building a recycling center for the town or designing an electric car, they are working hard and having fun helping the school, town, and environment.

— Karola Dalen, Carlton County Resource & Recycling CoordinatorThe mission of the Carlton County Zoning and Environmental Services Department is to protect and enhance Carlton County’s quality of life, environment, and growth by providing the citizens of Carlton County with comprehensive planning, efficient ordinance enforcement, and courteous technical assistance. The Carlton County Zoning and Environmental Services department manages the county’s solid waste and recycling programs, including outreach and education, and management of the Carlton County Transfer Station. Playground AttireOur playground catches the northwest wind and is cold most fall and winter school days. Please have your child dress appropriately for morning arrival and noon recess. In the winter we require that students in grades K-5 wear hats, mittens or gloves, coats, snow pants, and boots. We want them to be warm and dry as they enjoy the outdoors, and as comfortable as possible once they are back indoors.

Wrenshall Early ChildhoodA Parent Aware 4 Star Rated Program

Early Childhood Family Education • Hatchlings • Little WrensAnna Baciak, Early Childhood Coordinator, 384-4274 Ext. 1412

Shana Anderson, Early Childhood Aide

December brought cold temperatures, but exciting new activities and learning opportunities for us here in early childhood. We started the month with lessons on large, medium, and small. Students ordered objects from smallest to largest, grouped things by size, and looked at short and long. Of course, if we are talking about big things, we have to learn about dinosaurs! The children absolutely loved digging for dinos in the sensory tub, making fossil crayon rubbings, and marching around the room to their favorite prehistoric song! Our Hatchlings and

Little Wrens then moved on to super sports! We practiced our athletic skills in the gym and our sportsmanship skills in the classroom. Patterns were created with sports images and listening ears were put to the test with a coloring game. Students also brought sports to life at the art center, making basketball paintings with bubble wrap

and their own jerseys. The month fi nished with some seasonal and holiday fun — snowfl akes and Christmas trees turned our classroom into a winter wonderland!

We are thankful for fun times and good friends in early childhood!

Coming Up:Be sure to check the next issue of images for informati on on our upcoming ECfE fun night!

A special thanks to Animal Allies for a fantastic visit and lesson on furry friends!
