Important Information for the 2019 Annual Conference Members

WELCOME TO ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Annual Conference 2019 continues some of the changes we made in 2018 and brings still others as we read your evaluations. We begin with Bible study each morning and end each day with worship. We begin our physical set up in “Ordination mode” and have the “run for the seats” at 7 AM on Friday morning in traditional table mode. Through all these changes, my prayer is that we are:

Our conferences each year don’t happen by accident. This conference is a result of MANY hours of hard work, blood, sweat and a few tears along the way. I am thankful for all the support as I serve as Chair of the Conference Sessions Team. On behalf of the Sessions Team, I welcome you and pray that you will allow the Holy Spirit to be your guide this week. If there is anything you need, please don’t hesitate to ask.

I. D. BADGES: I.D. Badges are ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED to be worn at all times by members, visitors, and staff of the Annual Conference. This differentiates you from strangers on campus to allow our Conference Safety Team and the College Safety Team to keep you safe. If you feel you have been issued the wrong type of name badge, please see John Wilson, Conference Secretary.

TRANSPORTATION FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES: Golf Cart transportation is available between buildings on campus on a limited basis. Persons with Disabilities are the first priority for riding on the carts. Others are welcome to ride on a space-available basis, but please be willing to get off at any time to open a seat for a Person with Disabilities. Go to one of the “Golf Cart Shuttle Stop” signs to catch a ride. If you need any further information or help, the telephone number for the golf cart coordinator is

MEAL TICKETS & DINING LOCATIONS With your name tag, you should have received a color-coded meal ticket. There are two colors for the meal tickets that indicate where you are to eat. The locations are also printed on your name badge.

Either meal ticket may be used in the GEDUNK (Student Union) for lunch or supper. Please have your meal card in your hand PRIOR to your arrival at the check-in station.

HEALTH CARE AT ANNUAL CONFERENCE The nurse’s station is near the back of the Plenary room. You may call the nurses station at any time by picking up a campus telephone and dialing 1588 (or dial 724-450-1588 from your cell phone).

ADDITIONAL PORTABLE RESTROOM FACILITIES:

Flush-type Portable restrooms are located in the lighted trailer just outside the Plenary room accessed by going through the rolling overhead door on the back half of the plenary room. There is a handicapped accessible portable toilet in the same area.

OBSERVE TRAFFIC & PARKING REGULATIONS ON CAMPUS: Parking, typically, is not going to be adjacent to dormitories due to the green spaces of the campus. Please observe signage indicating reserved spaces for College personnel and for persons with disabilities. Vehicles that are illegally parked may be ticketed or towed at the discretion of Grove City College for health and safety reasons.

I. M. ROOM TO BE LOCKED: To allow preparation for the next day, the Plenary room will be locked 45 minutes following the close of each evening Plenary Session.

LOST AND FOUND: Lost and Found is at the “Seat Information & Hospitality” Desk in the rear of the Plenary Room. Following Annual Conference, contact Bill Jacka at 1-800-886-3382 or by email at [email protected].

WIRELESS INTERNET SERVICE: Choose GCC-Guest on your cell or laptop. Your browser will then open and you will be asked to register on the network with and e-mail address. At that point, you will be able to connect for 7 days.

PRAYER CENTER: In addition to the opportunities to worship during the Plenary Sessions, you are invited to spend time in prayer through the Prayer Center located on the second floor of the Breen Student Union (Gedunk). There are themed multisensory and interactive prayer stations and quiet areas for private meditative prayer. The Prayer Team members are praying for you personally and are available to pray with you, if desired.

As an accountant and auditor, I have gained experience in interpreting legislation and understanding guidelines. Further, it has helped me to anticipate the implications of our decisions. At the Conference level, I am currently serving on the Council on Finance and Administration as the vice-chair of the committee. In addition, I serve at the District level on the District Committee on Superintendency. In July I will begin to serve as the Washington District representative to the Conference Young Adult Council. To all of this, I bring my abilities to work hard and get everyone with me working well together. As delegates, we must faithfully work on behalf of all the voices in our Conference. I may be a stuffy administrator, but I also bring a new voice to the table! While my background and experience has been highly administrative, I also have a deep passion for The United Methodist Church and the work that we are able to accomplish together.

I’m an ordained elder who has been actively engaged in WPAUMC leadership, especially missions and outreach, disaster response, youth/young adult and anti-racism/cross-cultural ministry. I’ve been part of the 2012, 2016 and 2019 WPA delegations as a Jurisdictional Delegate/GC Reserve Delegate and have served on NEJ committees and Boards (Rules, Conference Boundaries, and UM VIM.) Through these I’ve developed working relationships and understandings of UM process useful for this moment in our life together. Since 2018 I’ve served the autonomous Bahamas Methodist Church which hosts VIM teams from all types of UM churches to do housing repair, disaster response and vocational skill-building. I’m learning from Bahamians who have lived through two denominational separations and re-organizations in 60 years and continue in ministry together as Methodists. I believe we need to address the issues coming to a boiling point in our UMC now with long term vision for the on-going mission and ministry of global Methodism. If we cannot agree to a uniting but generous orthodoxy then an amicable divorce is better than unraveling our church witness from both ends. Bahamians have taught me that we’re still going to be at the same funerals and disaster clean-ups no matter what happens. Let’s act decisively, authentically and with tenderness in policy and conduct. If necessary, I’d prefer multiple expressions to continue from a United Methodism that cannot be contained in colonial wineskins but by God’s grace could all thrive in fresh and new vessels.

The names of those nominated by the District Superintendents shall be in the hands of the Conference Secretary by March 1st, to be included in the Pre-Conference Journal. 2.3.5.1 The task of the tellers is to distribute, collect, and count the ballots, and to report the results of the ballot to the president of the Annual Conference. The Tellers should be chosen for accuracy and dependability, should have the confidence of the members of the Annual Conference, and should not have a direct personal involvement in the results of the ballot question. 2.3.5.2 The head teller shall deliver a written copy of the results of the ballot to the president of the Annual Conference. The president of the Annual Conference declares the results of the ballot.

What is a Teller? A Teller is an individual on a Team of Counters responsible for counting ballots. 1) The Teller must be of unquestionable character. They are the designated eyes and ears of the voting process, keeping watch to avoid any improprieties. They are trusted by the community. 2) They need to be ready to distribute and collect the ballots. 3) The results of the count must be given by the Bishop. Any knowledge of the results must be kept confidential until announced to the entire body at the same time.
