Psoriasis is one of the most serious chronic non"communicable dis"eases, due to the number of people a#ected, due to the significant im"pact in the quality of life and in the social relationships, due to a very active clinical and therapeutic re"search on this disease worldwide, and due to the arrival of innovative but highly costly therapeutic strategies.

October 29 is World Psoriasis Day. Conceived by patients for patients, World Psoriasis Day is a truly global event focusing on the burden of living with psoriasis. There are more than 125 million people with psoriasis/psoriatic arthritis in the world. Psoriasis is a seve"re chronic inflammatory disease that e#ects all ages, genders, races and ethni"cities.

The recent progress in the understan"ding of the disease has been remarkable. Psoriasis is now considered as a poten"tially severe inflammatory disorder. It may impose major social, psychological, physical and health impairment on pa"tients, promote metabolic syndrome, inflammatory and cardiovascular co"morbidities and reduce life expectancy. According to the years of life lost due to disability and premature death, access to the appropriate treatment modalities is mandatory to improve the health pers"pectives of psoriasis patients. IFPA APPROACH OF WHO FOR PSORIASIS RECOGNITION

The IFPA World Psoriasis Day global political action to urge the World Health Organization $WHO% to recognize psoriasis as a serious disease on a central level has now begun.

On World Psoriasis Day, Oct 29, IFPA delivered an inclusive packet of information about psoriasis to the World Health Organization $WHO% Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health Cluster at WHO in Geneva, Switzerland.

The packet included the IFPA report entitled "Psoriasis is a Serious Disease Deserving Global Attention," written by Ka"thleen Gallant, Chairman of the WHO Strategic Planning Committee. The IFPA strategy seeks to inform and request the World Health Organization recognize that psoriasis is a serious chronic, noncommunicable, autoimmune disease that a#ects over 125 million people of all ages and races, and carries severe physical, mental and socioeconomic burdens, including the elevated risk for serious co"morbid conditions. To support this claim, IFPA included scientific reports on psoriasis that covered the entire scope of the disease: epide"miology, physical/psychosocial/socioeconomic impacts, and the relationship with comorbid conditions.

IFPA is greatly honoured to relate that the Presidents of the International League of Dermatological Societies, ILDS and the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, EADV gave supporting statements for the WHO initiative and for World Psoriasis Day.

In addition, the packet also included a case statement descri"bing the organization of IFPA, as well as IFPA member re"ports and summaries of IFPAs main programs, including World Psoriasis Day concept and activities, and the World Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Conferences. Also presented to WHO was an introductory DVD trailer of the new IFPA project Under the Spotlight $UTS% , with an invitation to "meet people living with psoriasis", revealing the real life impact of psoriasis over time, by viewing the short videos on the UTS website.

WHO acknowledgement of psoriasis and World Psoriasis Day will help psoriasis patients to recognize their own disease and seek treatment, will enable the public to realize psoriasis is not contagious and halt discriminating behavior, and will facilitate the medical community to diagnose and e#ectively treat the disease. In small but e#ective steps, this outcome will help lift the heavy burden of psoriasis worldwide and allow for a better quality of life.

It is our goal that IFPA and WHO can partner together and reach out to the 125 million people struggling with psoriasis worldwide, assisting them to live a better quality of life and furthering IFPAs vision of a world without human su#ering

from psoriasis.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF EADV, PROFESSOR ANDREAS KATSAMBAS

29 October ! World Psoriasis Day 2008

$Brussels, 22/10/2008% Psoriasis is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease a#ecting approximately 2"3' of the European population. Although most individuals with psoriasis have mild skin involvement, requiring only topical creams and ointments for its management, a significant proportion of patients have a more extensive disease leading to marked physical discomfort, severe psychosocial distress and a negative impact on quality of life. Dermatologists are the experts in the field of Psoriasis and can provide specific help for the patients acting as their advocates who o#er them a wide range of treatments. Over the past decade, extensive research at the clinical and basic science level has enhanced our understanding of the pathoge"nesis of Psoriasis and its genetic background. Previously considered a disease of the skin $and in some cases of the joints%, we have now come to appreciate psoriasis as a systemic inflammatory condition with important repercussions in other organs and systems. The most essential development, however, has been the introduction of targeted biologic therapy in the clinical mana"gement of patients with moderate to severe psoriasis. By blocking critical steps of the inflammatory process, anti"TNF and anti"T cell agents have revolutionized our therapeutic approaches and have provided an e#ective treatment for long"term control of the disease with an acceptable safety profile. Our expanding knowledge of the underlying mechanisms of psoriasis will undoub"tedly create new opportunities to treat and potentially cure the disease. Together with the endeavours of the International Fe"deration of Psoriasis Associations $IFPA%, which the European Academy of Dermtology & Venereology $EADV% fully supports, the future for our patients has never before looked as bright and promising as it does today!

UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT ! NEW IFPA PROJECT RELEASED

First of a kind documentary project follows people living with psoriasis to see the e"ects of the disease on their lives over time

Stockholm, Thursday October 29th, World Psoriasis Day, 2009: The International Federation of Psoriasis Associations $IFPA% today launches the Under the Spotligh! project, designed to illuminate the impact that psoriasis has on individual lives, over time. A number of people living with psoriasis have agreed to allow cameras into their lives, to create a unique documenta"ry project, to see how the disease a#ects them and impacts the course of their lives, socially, in relationships and particularly at work.

Today, the first of a series of documentary programmes is made available, featuring six people living in the Nordics region of Germany, Sweden and Denmark. This documentary, along with other shorter films about the contributors can be viewed on www.underthespotlight.com. The project is the first of its kind and is intended to create a community of people living with pso"riasis around the world, where support and reassurance can be gained through shared experience. IFPA intends to broaden the

reach of the project by World Psoriasis Day 2010, when other coun"tries will join the project, and to continue to extend its reach over the next five years.

Meanwhile, the biggest ever international survey of people living with psoriasis has shown that the disease can cause significant and permanent damage to lives, with more than a third $37'% of the respondents stating that they will never be same person again, even if their psoriasis symptoms are cleared1.

Professor Uwe Gieler, a Psycho"Dermatologist from the University Clinic for Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy, in Giessen, Germany has been involved in the development of the Under the Spotligh! project. ‘There has never been any doubt that psoriasis is a devasta"ting disease, but the recent survey results begin to paint a picture

of how psoriasis can damage somebody’s life potential, perhaps because of a profound psychological impact or because they have felt unable to follow their chosen path in life. This produces a 'gap' between somebody's natural life trajectory and the tra"jectory they ultimately follow, and that is a very sad situation, not rarely followed by depression and stigmatization feelings.’

22 year old Benjamin, from Aarhus, in Denmark, is one among several people featured in the documentary who has had to aban"don his first choice of career. He was unable to work as an electrician because of practical problems with his skin, and is now studying to be an engineer. He anticipates a time when he may also need to leave engineering because of the appearance of his disease. He says, ‘I’m worried because in my new career I will have to look representable, I can’t look like a monster. I don’t know how people will react. I’ll have to take a job which is more suitable for my illness. I also have to worry about stress at work, as my psoriasis is a#ected by that.’

Lars Ettarp is President of IFPA. ‘People still believe that psoriasis is simply a disease of the skin. But everybody who lives with this disease knows that there is a great deal going on under the surface that may be invisible to the world around them. It’s time we try to understand the full implications of living with psoriasis, and to provide comfort to people who may otherwise feel they are alone in struggling to cope. It’s appropriate that we are launching the Under the Spotlight project today, on World Psoriasis Day, to mark our determination to understand and support people living with psoriasis.’

Under the Spotlight is an International IFPA project supported by Abbott, comprising a series of documentary films and a rela"ted website www.underthespotlight.com. The project is envisioned as a series of documentaries, where the same people are fol"lowed year after year, and each year additional IFPA member groups will join the project. The first documentary launched today, features people with psoriasis from Denmark, Sweden and Germany.

On World Psoriasis Day and during the month of November, the Hospital is distributing folders about the illness and carrying through enlightment lectures. But the main activity consists of medical attendance of the patients that need an one"hour inter view, because dermatologists have to explain all correlated problems; these interviews are being done twice a week. This is the first"of"its"kind press conference in China focusing on the burden of living with psoriasis. There are more than 125 million people with psoriasis/psoriatic arthritis in the world. Psoriasis is a severe chronic in"

FINLAND

Networking at the stationThe main event of the WPD in Finland took place at the Helsinki railway sta"tion. Approximately 250)000 people walk through the main station every day. The idea was to contact as many of them as possible and make them think ( at least for a couple of seconds ( of a condition called psoriasis.

We had a stand in the middle of the station with the head board saying: “Don´t be alone with psoriasis”. From the stand people could get more infor"mation about the disease and the local psoriasis associations.

Near the stand there was more action particularly for the younger generation. During the day youngsters with psoria"

sis build up an installation called “Pso"riasis at the station”. Some additions to this work of art were sent to Helsinki by train. “Mr. B. Virtanen”, quite a well known and popular cartoon character su#ering from psoriasis, also had an important role in WPD. The cartoon character was successfully used in media contacts and press releases, and the creator of the character ( a psoriasis patient him"self ( also came to Helsinki to meet media and fans.

One of the popular evening papers $Il "talehti%, read by 15 ' of the Finns $c. 750)000 people%, wrote in advance an extensive story about B. Virtanen, pso"riasis and WPD. Also Apu, one of the biggest general weekly magazines $read
