Stenden Rangsit Campus

Stenden Rangsit University is based

just north of Bangkok at the

campus of Rangsit University, the

fastest growing private university in

Thailand. The roughly 30,000

students, both Thai and foreign,

provide a wonderful opportunity to

mingle with different people and

cultures. The modern campus is laid

out in American collegiate style

with beautiful trees, gardens and

lakes between the high rise

buildings. SRU premises are located

on the 12th floor of the new

ideal for both city and nature lovers.

The facilities are designed for the

Bangkok

Bangkok, whose 13 million

inhabitants include virtually every

nationality in the world, is the

capital of the never colonized

Kingdom of Thailand. Known

globally for the friendliness and

natural hospitality of its people, the

“Land of Smiles” serves as a hub for

the whole South East Asian region

and is as such a natural place for a

study abroad with an international

management focus. About 12

million tourists arrive to Thailand

each year, flocked to see the

stunning Buddhist temples, royal

palaces, the natural beauties of the

forests of the North, and the sunny

white beaches and tropical islands

of the South. Bangkok provides the

shopping extravaganza of a

lifetime. The shopping facilities

include the floating markets on the

canals, Chatachuk, a sprawling

market of over 10 000 stalls, as well

as the enormous, modern shopping

centres, offering every international

brand known to man. The

extraordinary Thai cuisine is enough

to draw visitors all on its own. The

facilities including swimming pools,

gyms, football and basketball fields,

golf courses, help the students to

recharge after a long day of studies.

SRU campus is a perfect place for

intensive studies in a friendly and

multicultural environment.

“The minor also offers perfect opportunities for self-development through the different

community stays in which one have to cope with unfamiliar situations, forcing oneself to

adapt, to be open minded. Also, the language barrier propels one to be more flexible”

Melanie Mai, International Tourism Management

Relevance to the industry

With community-based tourism (CBT), you can immerse yourself in the day-to-

day lives of local and indigenous people while helping them to preserve their

environment and cultural heritage. By doing so, the communities will share in the

revenues of tourism. The growing awareness of the importance of sustainability

and the wish to have an 'authentic experience' during a trip is stimulating travelers

to choose eople travel more frequently they become 'career-travelers',

continually demanding newer, deeper and more meaningful experiences at the

destinations they visit. These developments provide good chances of increasing

demand for CBT (source: www.cbi.eu). In 2012 a research showed that in West

Europe 35% of the adults would like to try volunteer work in communities, and 6%

had already done so. Most tour operators offering adventure holidays are

nowadays also organising village stays, with volunteer work included. So, if you

are interested in becoming a professional in this sector, it is important that you

experience this type of tourism yourself. But most important you will learn about

the tourism value chain and business between the tourism generating countries

and receiving destinations, sustainable tourism development with a focus on the

creation of income generation for deprived communities.

Introduction minor

During an introduction in Thai culture and society, studying community based

tourism in Asia, the students will be trained by a Thai NGO called CBT-I. During this

period the lectures and seminars offered, allow the students to actively debate

the issues that the students see as central to the topic and most relevant in their

individual preparations for their fia package deal including CBT-elements. In

addition, the rising level of education and subsequently an increasing interest in

(other) cultures suggests that tourists will increasingly demand a combination of

culture and leisure. As peld work. The used teaching approach pushes the student

to become the driving force behind the module and therefore a pro-active

attitude of the student is required. After the introduction period, for 3-4 weeks

students will stay in a small village to support the tourism product development

and will further seek market opportunities. CBT-I will coach and supervise the

students every day and translators are available to communicate with the

villagers. The students will be regarded as junior “consultants” to the community.

The experiences of the students will be guided and assessed in a personal

portfolio. During the field work period, students will reside with host families and

experience their daily life/customs. After having completed the module, the

results will be presented to the local communities and CBT-I. The minor is an

authentic learning experience, rich in culture and biodiversity, in which you will

get to know the locals at the grass roots level..

Community-Based Tourism

“Seeing the lifestyle of the different communities also encourages me to see my own life in a different way, to be happy with simple things, to value what I have even more including my own family and friends”

Thailandthe land of smiles

“The work you do during the module is

varied, for instance, you have to write

a blog every other week about issues

concerning International Relations and

there are debates in which you spilt

your group in half to debate in teams

against each other concerning various

topics. The minor is a great opportunity

to learn more about Thailand,

Southeast Asia and the world in

general”

Teun Oonk, International Hospitality

A changing world

The world today is characterised by rapid change and

growing interdependence among nations. The political

and economic situation of countries has become more

complex and increasingly dependent upon events beyond

borders. Examples of these changes and growing

interdependence are the impact of the latest recession,

the increasing importance of South-East Asia's economy,

which is illustrated by the evolution of ASEAN, and China's

rapidly growing economic power. Because of the

complexity of the world we are living in today, nations

need professionals with knowledge of international

relations who can serve in international organizations,

governments and international business.

InternationalRelations

Introduction minor

This double minor provides you with a deep knowledge of international

relations covering topics such as international security, international law,

international politics, diplomatic history, international economics and business

culture with a focus on the Asian region. You will work on case studies drawn

directly from the actual situation and current events in Asia. You will visit

diplomatic organisations such as UNESCO, ILO and embassies and will attend

international network events. To fully immerse yourself in the Asian culture, you

will learn the basics of the Mandarin language and Chinese culture. The minor

aims to prepare you for positions of leadership in international business or

foreign affairs

“ASEAN is defined by ethnic and religious pluralism. In a

globalised world, this diverse and pluralistic region is facing

quite some new challenges (as the countries) are integrating

and working together much closer than in the past. That will

bring a lot of problems and challenges. The challenge now is

how to live in harmony and mutual respect for a better

future.”

Former Secretary General, ASEAN: Mr. Surin Pitsuwan

“Let me end by saying that of my

entire education at Stenden, this

has been one of the most

informative modules. I learned a

tremendous amount of new things

and met a lot of people with

interesting stories”

Page 6: World of Opportunities Brochure SRU

Event Management

The MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and

Events) industry is a multi-million dollar industry

specialised in hosting and organizing events, such as

corporate conferences, incentive travels, VIP meetings,

festivals, seminars, branch-related events and

exhibitions. The MICE industry is a growing industry that

is in need of skilled and professional event organisers.

Particularly interpersonal skills, (project) management

skills and a deep financial insight are important. Also

interaction with stakeholders, insight in new media and

marketing knowledge are essential qualities of an event

organiser.

“Thailand is an experience which I will never

forget. Who could've imagined that a place

like Thailand could change your lifestyle, how

you treat people, and how you learn from

them. For me it was like this, it changed my

whole perspective of the world. Doing event

management in Thailand was very fruitful,

high quality education, entertaining and very

practical, preparing you for the real world.”

Sami Abdin, Media and Entertainment

Management

Event Management 2

Introduction minor

In this minor you will organize a real-life event in cooperation with experts from the local MICE

industry. As there is a variety of different events to choose from, the minor will start-off with a

bid presentation where you and your group get the chance to convince the client to accept your

bid.

After you have been assigned to an event, you and your group will work on organizing this

particular event throughout the complete module. You will do this in close contact with the

(external) client and the CEO (the Stenden tutor who will support the process). Meetings with

your group, your external client and your tutor will therefore be the main activities during this

module. Be aware that the events you are dealing with would require a planning phase of up to

over a year, making it - most of the time - impossible for you to go through all project planning

phases until the actual implementation.

“Of course the main question is “does this minor help me

with my career?”. I'm confident to say it does! Because the

minor is very practical you get a peak of how it goes in the

'real world'. The student constantly has to come up with

feasible fresh ideas which fit to the concept, and constantly

keep the clients demands in sight. Next to that the student

learns how to sell and defend their ideas to the client, and

how to cope with negative feedback and changing ideas

from this client.” Willem Dekker, Media and

Entertainment Management

“Being invited to the Stenden Rangsit University campus is

always pleasure and the foresight of bringing lecturers with

practical experience clearly confirms the applied approach to

this curriculum. Lecturing the future generation on some of

the uncommon challenges they will face is specifically

gratifying while these students are the ones that soon will

be in the front-line facing the “ what else can go wrong “

calamities and demands for “ the best event for as little

money as possible.“ Bert van Walbeek - Owner, The

Winning Edge and Chairman Membership Committee at

Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA)

Page 7: World of Opportunities Brochure SRU

Wellness, spa and health

The wellness industry is a booming business with an annual global turnover of

almost two trillion USD. The industry is not new; even in Roman times all

classes of society frequently used public bathhouses and understood the

benefits of wellness products. Nowadays, the global wellness industry

comprises of a wide range of sectors like the spa industry, medical tourism,

fitness, nutrition, anti-aging, spiritual wellbeing and more. The growing

demand for wellness services is caused by various developments and trends:

life expectancy is increasing, companies focus stronger on physical and mental

wellbeing of employees and people from all over the world are searching for a

healthy balance of work and social life, in which fitness, health and relaxation

play an important role. Wellness, in fact, touches on various aspects of

everyday life.

“Looking back I can conclude that

I have gained knowledge about

the business potential in Spa and

Wellness in South- Eastern Asia

as well as doing business in Asia,

in general. Looking from a more

practical perspective, I improved

my teamwork skills and learnt

new approaches as to how to

solve a business question in

general. Besides its business

direction, the minor reflected on

my personal enrichment as well. I

discovered new ways of keeping

your body, mind and spirit in

balance by means of yoga and

healthy food workshops”

Nikoleta Siderova, International

Tourism Management

Spa & Health Business Concepts

Introduction Minor

The minors Spa and Health Business Concepts in Thailand and Spa

Business Strategy in Bali will prepare you for becoming a manager,

consultant or entrepreneur in one of the sectors of the wellness industry.

The minors are also of value to students who would like to work in

industries that have connections with the wellness industry, such as the

hospitality, leisure or tourism industry or to students with an interest in

HR.

The module in Thailand provides you with a global overview of the

wellness industry; its characteristics, philosophies and trends. Although

you will get a worldwide overview, the focus will be on Asia and Thailand;

you will attend guest lecturers and workshops from Asian industry

experts, will visit leading spa companies in Bangkok and will acquire

basic knowledge of Thai (healthy) food, Thai massage and yoga. At the

end of the module, you will have gained an in-depth understanding of

one of the sectors of the wellness industry and have presented your view

on health concepts and philosophies in a paper. But more importantly;

you will have experienced and seen the spa and health industry from

nearby, in a region from which many of the spa concepts originate.

“Nowadays, lifestyle, technology and all surroundings are more complicated and impact our

health and well-being. Due to the growth of spa and wellness industry, the demand for more

qualified industry professionals is increasing. The positions in spa and wellness industry are

varied, but it is important that the people employed truly understand the core of the health and

well-being business”

Mrs Phattiraporn Khiewsanun, Vice President of the Thai Spa Association and Managing

Director and Owner of spa & health Consultancy Company, Milk Line Co., Ltd.

“The Spa and Health

minor is very up to date

with the latest trends and

it has become very clear

that people are becoming

more aware of their

personal health. Next to

that employers become

also more aware of the

importance of health of

their employees. The

minor allows you to look

at these trends from an

Asian perspective, which

is very interesting.

Dewi Moester,

International Hospitality

Page 8: World of Opportunities Brochure SRU

“Working with the SRU students on the Marketing & Management in Asia

Minor has been invaluable to me as a small business operator. For the

students working on 'real life' projects gives them practical experience working

to find practical marketing & management solutions for real business

operators, while from the business operator perspective, having the ability to

utilize the creativity and open mindedness of the students can yield a

practical, implementable business plan, that can fast track a small business.”

Andrew Jacka, Managing Director, Spa Origins International Co., Ltd.

“Marketing and Management in

Asia part 1 offered all the

theories I am interested in. I

especially loved the ASEAN

studies and brand management

classes as well as the field trips

which I found to be very

inspiring”

Zaneta Imam, International

Hospitality Management

Welcome to Asia

Asia hosts around 56% of the world population and is home to

three of the four most densely populated countries in the

world (China, India and Indonesia). While most western

countries have experienced a downward economic trend in

the last years, Asian economies have grown at a fast pace,

unleashing a true potential as emerging markets. From merely

cheap production places, Asian countries have now become an

interesting and growing consumer market for western

companies. Though Asia is a large and diverse market, it

brings with itself unique challenges to doing business. The

marketing environment and current practices in the different

Asian countries will reveal new norms and conventions for

companies planning to enter and do business in these

countries.

Marketing and Management in Asia 1

Introduction minor

The Marketing and Management in Asia 1 minor aims to develop the critical competencies

that are needed to identify, analyse and solve problems and challenges encountered in global

marketing and management, with a special focus on Asia. This minor provides the students

with the unique opportunity to get familiar with marketing and management concepts in Asia

while staying in the international business environment of Bangkok; the city that is home to

most of the multinational companies that are doing business in the region of South East Asia.

Students can continue with Marketing and Management 2 in Bali, where the acquired

competences will be put into practice.

“We established our crazy ideas

adapted to the Asian market,

that indeed has different needs

and wants – do you think Justin

Bieber in a commercial would

work in Germany/The

Netherlands when aiming at

students?!“

Melanie Mai, International

Tourism Management
