Definition What is global health (International Health)? Health problems, issues, and concerns that transcend national boundaries, which may be influenced by circumstances or experiences in other countries, and which are best addressed by cooperative actions and solutions (Institute Of Medicine, USA- 1997) STRUCTURE OF WHO The head office of the WHO is located in Geneva Switzerland. It is governed by three principal bodies . World Health Assembly The WHO is governed by the world health assembly, which is composed of representatives from all 192 member countries. The main tasks of World Health Assembly includes approval of policies, programs the budget for the following biennium. Executive Board The executive board comprises of 31 professionals and technical experts. Each region has at least three representatives in executive board. Although the executive board members come from their representative countries, they are technically not considered as country representatives. A member is selected for three years and every year one- third of the board members retire. The board meets at least twice a year. Its functions include, implementing the decisions taken at the World Health Assembly. In event of an emergency, the board can take decisions on its own. Secretariat While the above two bodies are instruments of the democratic process of the WHO, secretariat heads the bureaucratic structure. Director General is the CEO and heads the secretariat.
