* Preach the Gospeh 11 Heal the Sick" “ Ye shall know sha.ll VOL. II KANSAS CITY, MO., THURSDAY, APRIL 13, 1911 No. 49 WORKS R exford J effery Extracts from Mr. Jeffery’s Sunday even- ing talk in Unity Audito- rium, April 9, 1911. The subject for our talk to-night is “Works.” You remember last Sunday we spoke of “Faith.” Paul said that faith without works was dead. So we want a living faith, a faith that works, a faith that accomplishes and docs things. There are four ways of handling the principles of the science of the Christ. One is deep thinking; another is speaking; another, writing; and the fourth is the living of these principles. There arc some minds that are not yet trained into consecutive thinking, but they can write down those things which they feel to be so and know to be so, and in their writing is a life-giv- ing, quickening, healing power. If they will continue in their writing, they will soon find their minds coming into the power of thinking consecutively and in order, and being able to speak out; and then they will do their work by either si- lent or audible reasonings. You remember that in the story of the creation it was said, “Let there be a firma- ment in the midst of the waters.” And then, “Let the waters be gathered to- gether in one place, and let the dry land appear.” That is, let it be known what vou believe. I)o you believe in One Power omnipotent? Then stand to it. Do you believe that that Power will operate when you stand to it? If you do, declare you believe it; you will find the mind opening, the perceptions quickened, and you will be able to see back into the cause of things and understand tile reasons for things being as they are. They may be contrary to your belief, but you state your belief and stand to it. If some one should de- clare to ymu that evil exists, that there is a force of evil in the world, and you believe that God is omnipresent, and state your belief and stand to it—you need not say anything, you need only stand to your belief—if you will stand firm in the face of that which contradicts, you will see that the mind that has taken a contrary attitude will come around to your belief and way of thinking. If a thing is not founded on the Truth it cannot stand. You will find that gradually the thoughts of evil will depart from your mind. Your eye will be open to see the good only. I f you stand to the fact that there is only one substance filling the universe, you will be- gin to see yourself the offspring of the Spirit, and you will realize the truth that what the Master said is so—that you are born of the Spirit. These are “works.” These "efforts to establish new states of consciousness are works. If you have the Truth always in your mind, always have some statement or some divine Principle operative in your mind, you will come to a place where you will not have to act or speak or write in any way. You will simply have to abide in

E xtrac ts from M r. J e ffe r y ’s Sunday evening ta lk in U nity A ud ito

rium , A p ril 9, 1911.

T he sub jec t for our ta lk to-night is “W orks.” You rem em ber last S unday we spoke of “F a ith .” Paul said th a t faith w ithout works was dead. So we w ant a living fa ith , a fa ith th a t w orks, a faith th a t accom plishes and docs things. T here a re four ways of handling the principles o f the science of the C hrist. One is deep th in k in g ; another is speak ing ; another, w ritin g ; and the fourth is the living of these princip les. T here arc some m inds th a t are not yet tra ined into consecutive th ink ing , but they can w rite down those th ings which they feel to be so and know to be so, and in the ir w riting is a life-giv- ing, quickening, healing power. I f they will continue in the ir w riting , they will soon find the ir m inds coming into the pow er of th ink ing consecutively and in o rder, and being able to speak ou t; and then they w ill do the ir w ork by e ither silent or audible reasonings.

You rem em ber tha t in the story of the creation it was said, “ L et th e re be a firm am ent in the m idst of the w aters.” And then, “L et the w aters be gathered to gether in one place, and let the d ry land ap p ear.” T h a t is, let it be known w hat vou believe. I)o you believe in One Power om nipotent? T hen stand to it. D o you

believe th a t th a t Pow er will operate when you stand to it? I f you do, declare you believe i t ; you w ill find the mind opening, the perceptions quickened, and you will be able to see back into the cause of things and understand tile reasons for things being as they are. T hey m ay be contrary to your belief, but you sta te your belief and stand to it. I f some one should declare to ymu th a t evil exists, th a t there is a force of evil in the world, and you believe th a t God is om nipresent, and state your belief and stand to it— you need not say anyth ing , you need only stand to your belief— if you w ill s tand firm in the face of th a t which contradicts, you will see th a t the mind th a t has taken a contrary attitude will come around to your belief and way of thinking. I f a th ing is not founded on the T ru th it cannot stand. You w ill find th a t g radually the thoughts of evil w ill d ep a rt from your mind. Your eye will be open to see the good only. I f you stand to the fac t th a t there is only one substance filling the universe, you will begin to see yourself the offspring of the S p irit, and you w ill realize the tru th tha t w hat the M aster said is so— th a t you are born of the S p irit. These are “ works.” These "efforts to establish new states of consciousness are works.

I f you have the T ru th always in your mind, always have some statem ent or some divine P rinc ip le operative in your mind, you w ill come to a place w here you will not have to act or speak or w rite in any way. You will sim ply have to abide in

th a t P rincip le . Those who come in contact w ith this sta te in you w ill be charged, will feel the touch of the Infinite. These are the works of faith . H e who w ill hold to the P rinc ip le of e ternal life w ill find th a t the re is w ork going on in him and around him th a t is life-giving, quickening. Jesus, charged w ith the idea of eternal life, was able to b ring fo rth those who were lacking in th a t thought. “ T he things th a t I do shall ye do also,” said he.

P erhaps you are dissatisfied w ith the conditions in your life , in your social world, in your environm ent, in your business w orld. These conditions are the outcome of the thoughts you have held, the feelings you have entertained . I f you do not like them you had b e tte r get back to the cause. F ind out w hat key you are singing in, w hat you are th ink ing about. Are you beholding some evil somewhere? Are you seeing m istakes in some one? Arc you engaged in accusation? I f you are, these have been p ic tured out in your environm ent and affairs.

The reason a m an does not touch his p rosperity is th a t he is in a constant sta te of accusing. T here a re some people who growl a g rea t deal, and who never come into the ir own. T hey do not understand it. T hey w ork h ard , and ye t they a re not p rospered as w ell as one who toils much le s s ; there is some one thought in the ir minds th a t is not in tune w ith the universe. I f our environm ent is not to our liking, le t us get back to ourselves and see w hat is going on there. L e t us find w hat we believe, and stand to th a t belief and declare th a t belief. L e t us speak it over and over, and g radually we w ill discover th a t we are building up a sta te of fa ith ; and let us stand to th a t fa ith , and we will sec th a t it is an opera ting P rinc ip le and does things. L e t us look and see w hat we believe— look into our beliefs, because our life, our own state , m ental and physical, and our environm ent and social and financial conditions, are all the resu lts of the thoughts and beliefs th a t we are holding in mind. Some people do not know that.

T hey believe in Satan . I t has been handed down to them from generation to generation. T hey do not seem to know th a t the w ord “ S a ta n ” is sim ply a w ord for our belief in the absence of God. Some do not know th a t the ir belief in an end of the world, and a hell fire and brim stone, is the cause of m an’s sickness and so rro w ; but it is. I t is a race thought, a hered itary belief. T here are a ll sorts of conditions th a t come up in the mind and body, sim ply because we believe th a t conditions can be hered itary . Jesus said, “C ast these things ou t; go out and preach the gospel. H eal the sick, cast out demons (or passions— th a t was the nam e for passions in the old ag e ) , raise the dead .” H ow are we going to do it? B y first know ing who and w hat we are. “ Know ye not th a t ye are the offsp ring of G od?” T h a t which is born of the S p irit is S p irit. S tand to th a t, hold to that. I f you do not yet know it, then take it on the w ord of o th e rs ; take it on the w ord of the M aster. Believe it because it was so sta ted , and hold the mind open and you will find out w hat it means. You are a child of the Infin ite M ind, and because of th a t you are able to do these things. T here steals into you a sense of pow er in your speech, in your word, in your w riting.

S tate , then , your belief, and stand to it day and n igh t, and do not waver. Keep some one of your P rincip les m oving in your m ind all the time. W hen you are w orking w ith your hands you can have runn ing th rough your m ind some great doctrine of C hrist, and you will find th a t it sets a glow m oving in your being, and a streng th th a t is bound to do something. I t is a creative power. Keep the sayings of the M aster: “M y w ords arc S p irit and they are L ife ;” “ H eaven and ea rth shall pass aw ay, but my w ords shall never pass aw ay.” I f you hold the sayings of Jesus in vour mind, you will find th a t a sense of the One S p irit and the One L ife will come into your consciousness. In th is state , when you speak, when you w rite, when you act, the re is a quickening th a t goes out to people and into the environm ent.

WEEKLY U N ITY 3

This T ru th is the science of the I Am, and he who has touched the I Am also knows th a t it is a sta te of 1 W ill, I Do. T h a t m ind th a t is in C hrist Jesus is a m ind th a t is always operative, always keyed, alw ays ready. I t is a pow er in th a t it knows its own ab ility , its divinity. S im ply know ing is power. T hen stand to w hat you believe, and sec it become knowledge and power.

So the tim e comes when you know there is nothing to do on your p a r t bu t to keep the D ivine P rinc ip les moving in your consciousness. You will find a f te r awhile th a t there is no such tiling as healing the sick. W hen Jesus said, “Go and heal the sick,” he m eant, S tand for w hat the T ru th is, and there will be no sick. T he man who ju d g es by appearances, who judges from w hat he sees and hears w ith m aterial eyes and ears, says there is healing to take p lace ; but he who knows, sees the re is no such th ing as healing. T he m athem atician who holds to m athem atics, and th inks and speaks of its ru les, will find th a t his head will begin to ta"ke another shape. Is he th ink ing of his head? No, he is th in k ing of the g rea t p rincip le of m athem atics. I f we keep the D ivine P rincip les w orking in our m ind, if we keep th ink ing of them all the tim e, we w ill begin to see people as they rea lly a re ; and when we see them as they rea lly are , they begin to m anifest th e ir rea l selves. One who looks w ith the physical eye sees them changed, but we know they are not changed. T hey are ju s t as they alw ays w'ere. You see th ings as God m ade them , and he pronounced them all good. I f any one will speak to you of the evil or w rong-doing of another, you w ill stand and say th a t there was a false ju d g m en t placed upon him. You w ill ju d g e righteous ju d g m en t; and if you stand by your judgm en t you will begin to see a change in th a t person. So your g reat w ork of healing is to see a m an as he really is, and then he w ill come fo rth and show him self. N otice how Jesus d id that. T here is alw ays a w ay out of every situation ; the re is always a keynote to s tr ik e ;

and when you strike th a t note, all is well.W hen you abide in faith un til you no

longer have faith— the faith has you— all you will have to do is to stand firm, and appearances will change about you. Can any one say to you, T here is lack, or loss, or poverty , anyw here? T here can be none of these things in the om nipresent Good. Know th a t; speak the word, sta te your belief, and stand to it. S peak it over and over un til i t becomes operative w ith you. S peak it un til you can sim ply look a t one and p rosper him by the ligh t th a t shall shine from w ithin your being, which is all aglow w ith the fire of T ru th .

T here is alw ays a sign being w afted to u s; the Infin ite is ever throw ing out signals to us, but we do not behold them. We cannot see. I f we stand firm to our belief, we see success w here ap p a ren tly there is none. W e have a new sense of heaven; we have a new earth . T he kingdom of heaven is rig h t here, in and around us, within and w ithout. W e find th a t people change, th a t environm ents change, as we get closer and closer to the fact of who and w hat we are.

T he universe is to you as you have spoken into it. W hat is your belief, and how have you stated it? T hen set your m ind to high ideas. S ta te them and resta te them , and you will find th a t they come into your being. T he mind is as g rea t as m an has courage to affirm. The m ind is as free as man has courage to d e n y ; and man is as g rea t and strong as he has courage to stand to his belief. I f man w ill abide in his belief, he will move to the heights of the universe. H is thoughts and ideals are the substance out of which th ings are made. They are made with the thoughts th a t move out from our being, from our beliefs. Some people believe in sickness; they get it. W e come across people and find th a t a g rea t cause of th e ir trouble is they have had a belief th a t they some tim e m ight have th a t thing. T he idea was w ritten in th e ir flesh and was m anifested. G et into your m ind and find out w hat the thoughts you are holding are

like. A re they con trary to the T ru th in which you have fa ith ? W hat is the re to fear if God is the All in all ? P e te r said, “H ave reason for the hope th a t is in you.” So when you see and know who and w hat you are— th a t you are born of th a t D ivine Intelligence perm eating the universe— then as D ivine M ind you p reach the gospel, heal the sick, cast out demons, and raise the dead. “ I t is not I , but the F a th e r w ithin me, he doetli the w orks.” I t is well to make those statem ents together, because the hum an is quite ap t to rise up and a p p ropria te the statem ents made w ithin, and you will have to balance yourself to know th a t it is the F a th e r th a t does a ll things. H e who can w ork the works of H im who sent him is the one who can stand up and say, “ I of mine own self can do no th ing ,” and can balance th a t sta tem ent by saying th is: “ I have all pow er in heaven and in earth .” W hen you can stand poised between these two states of being, then you are in the C hrist consciousness.

T here is a certain creative force in the word of him who takes the stand of the M aster and abides by his sayings. Then le t us work the w orks of him who sent us, stand to our beliefs, and speak our beliefs. Let us stand to our good, and hear nothing but th a t good. Ju d g e as you know to be righteous and true. K eep vour eye on the Suprem e and you w ill ju d g e only rig h teously. H old to your P rinc ip le . N ever forsake it, no m atter w hat the appearances.

S tand to your beliefs and be courageous enough to speak them , and to deny th a t

which contradicts the g lory of God. In this w ay you will find th a t you are p re vented from getting sick, instead of gettin g healed a fte r you are sick. You are prevented from m eeting financial tangles. N othing can resist your P rinc ip le of T ru th .

Wednesday Evening MeetingOne of the most help fu l meetings held

during the week in U nity A uditorium is the W ednesday evening healing meeting. M r. F illm ore alw ays gives a good practical ta lk , and th is is followed by a season of silence, when the healing W ord is sent to all those whom the m embers of the congregation wish to help.

T he follow ing are a few points from a ta lk on “ C ourage,” given on W ednesday evening, A pril 5, 1911:

W e find th a t we gain sa tisfaction only when wre handle the propositions th a t come up daily . I f we play the cow ard and run aw ay, we arc dissatisfied because we feel th a t we have not done our duty. The reason of th is is th a t the soul is seeking expression along all lines. T here is someth ing to be brought fo rth every moment, and if we arc negligent a t any tim e, the law is broken and a d isappoin ted soul the result.

P eople w ith high ideals are sometimes rebellious because they are out-distanced by others who have more confidence than ability. This feeling of rebellion can be overcome by recognizing th a t along with high ideals there should be a cultivation of confidence and courage. “A ct, and act quickly,” should be the motto of people who lack courage. I f you are given to seeing bugaboos and bears in your way, w henever you a ttem p t to do anyth ing , trea t yourself for courage and go forw ard. In stead of saying, “Oh, I can ’t do th is ,” say “ I can, I w ill.”

I f you know how to handle thoughts by denying w hat you do not w ant and affirming th a t you have a ll th a t you desire, you will succeed in the end.

WEEKLY UNITY 5

In clearing aw ay m ental states of fear, first do aw ay with thoughts of opposition of every kind. All opposition is first mental. Those who believe in enemies, or in some dangerous occult force, build up a fear sta te &f mind, and as Job said— “ T he th ing which I g rea tly feared has come upon me.” E very fea rfu l thought goes out and builds fea rfu l conditions, unless one is wise enough to dissolve them in tim e by his word. D o aw ay w ith all thoughts of enmity. M ake friends w ith your adversaries. I f you are a fra id of the elem ents, change your thought about them and be friendlv tow ard them. T here are m any th ings th a t the m ortal man finds to fear, but we know th a t the universe is perm eated w ith One Infin ite Substance th a t is pure and powerfu l, and th a t is always silently w orking fo r good. I t is never destructive, but is alw ays constructive, and it is d irec tly connected w ith the m ind of man. W hen we know th is, and make it p a r t of our consciousness, we build in th a t w hite Substance, and lose all thoughts of fear.

A ll conditions are held in place by thought. T hose, who recognize th is tru th have the key to all pow er and m astery. T hey can change any condition. Speak words of boldness and courage like these:

“ No fea rfu l condition or opposing force of any kind has power to h inder my full, free expression.”

You w ill be su rp rised how you can go fo rth and safely m eet a ll th a t seems fo rmidable. if you will send out your bold, fearless w ord before you. T he S p irit of the L ord does go before and make easy, safe, and successful the way of a ll those who have confidence in it and speak it rig h t out into the ethers.

M r. Je ffery announced last S unday night th a t he would leave fo r the E a s t next week. H is ta lk in the evening of E as te r Sunday w ill therefo re be his la s t before his K ansas C ity friends, un til he decides to make us another visit. A ll are cordially invited to be presen t, and none should miss this opportun ity of hearing him once more.

E very man th a t striveth for the mastery is tem perate in all th ings. Now they do it to obtain a corrup tib le crow n; but we an incorruptib le.

A nd if a m an also strive for m asteries, yet is he not crow ned, except he strive law fully .

Because thou h ast kept the W ord of my patience, I also w ill keep thee from the hour of tem ptation , which shall come upon all the w orld, to try them th a t dwell upon the earth .

Behold, I come qu ick ly : hold th a t fast which thou hast, th a t no man take thy crown.

Blessed is the m an th a t endureth tem ptation : for when he is tried , he shall receive the crown of life , which the Lord hath prom ised to them th a t love him.

As ye have the re fo re received C hrist Jesu s the L ord , so w alk ye in him:

F or in him dw elleth a ll the fullness of the G odhead bodily.

And ye are com plete in him, which is the head of all p rincipality and power.

B uried w ith him in baptism , wherein also ye are risen w ith him through the faith o f the operation of G od, who hath raised him from the dead.

F or if ye then be risen with C hrist, seek those th ings which are above, where C hrist sitte th on the rig h t hand of God.

S et your affection on things above, not on th ings on earth .

F or ye are dead, and your life is hid w ith C hrist in God.

W hen C hrist, who is our life, shall ap pear, then shall ye also appear with him in glorv.

Knowing th is, th a t our old m an is cru cified with him , th a t the body of sin might be destroyed, th a t henceforth we should not serve sin.

F or in th a t he died, he died unto sin once: but in th a t he liveth , he liveth unto God.

Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dea<J unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus C hrist our Lord.

T he Society of S ilent U nity has a brand-new organ which they ordered d irect from the factory in Y ork, P a. They have also some new song books w ith b righ t lively tunes th a t send the blood bounding through the veins w ith the jo y of living. B y the way, the S ilen t U n ity people a re a happy lot. T hey have th a t kind of hap piness th a t follows w here the dom inant thought is helpfulness to others. N ot a g rea t deal is known about the ir w ork, even by the K ansas C ity friends, except by the results th a t are given in U nity each month under the head of “D em onstrations of the L aw ,” but they w ork aw ay quietly and happ ily every day on the th ird floor of the new' building, sending out the W ord of L ife in a consecrated, concentrated way th a t carries blessings around the earth .
