It is an honor to be hosting the 8th Annual Summit 3 sale. Our thanks go out to our Summit partners, our Australian partners, our family, sale staff and our farm staff. These events do not just happen. Good people make them happen.Sophisticated testing procedures allows for better animal selection. Codiak sale cattle have been tested genetically for polled, coat colour and myostatin. In addition, the cattle are tested under the Q-Select program. Testing allows us to genetically select the best possible matings. As we move ahead we will continue to not only test our herd sires but also our females. Please feel free to request test results from us prior to the sale. We can perhaps help guide you in the direction you choose to move in your own program.Codiak bulls are raised for the first winter on 5 lbs of barley and silage. The summer

is spent on pasture only. Six months prior to the sale they are fed whole oats for two months and then a 13% grower pellet ration. Our vaccination protocol for the bulls is Pyramid FP10, Vision 8 with Somnus and Multimin 90. Our complete protocol will be available with our supplement sheets including a commentary from our herd veterinarian, Dr. Graeme Boender.Please join us on the 30th for a look through the cattle and again on sale day, the 31st for dinner and refreshments.

We would like to welcome everyone to this year’s sale and say how excited we are to once again be part of the Summit 3 Sale. We are extremely proud of our pen of bulls this year. We have what we believe, is an excellent lineup of bulls that will work for both the commercial cattlemen and purebred breeders, and in the end will add pounds and dollars to the bottom line for the producers. Our animals have been developed on a high quality home grown hay ration, supplemented with at 14% textured ration, and are on a full herd health program. Our focus over the past year has been to improve our genetics through genetic defect testing (polled/horned, coat color and myostatin). We are pleased to be able to say that our entire offering are homozygous polled and homozygous black for coat color, with only 20% carrying the myostatin gene. Each animal offered in the sale will be tested for breeding soundness and has been tested for

PMCH is a gene test that defines alleles as A or T. When compared to TT genotypes, AA genotypes will have an increased fat deposition, with results of increased tenderness, mar-bling, and 12th-rib backfat.

igf2 test results will show cattle with alleles to be ei-ther C or T (note that these are not the same alleles as those of the PMCH test). Cattle with the igf2 geno-type of CC have larger ri-beyes than TT genotypes.

crH4 test results will show cattle with alleles to be either G or C. GG-genotype cattle are able to handle stress bet-ter, resulting in increased hot carcass weight and increased ribeye size as compared to CC-genotype cattle.
