Students will learn the practice and skill of drawing blood for phlebotomy positions in laboratories, hospitals and doctors’ offi ces. Once the classroom portion of the course is completed, students gain valuable clinical experience during an internship with a local healthcare provider. Patient Care technicians work in hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, long-term care facilities, physician offi ces and assisted living facilities. These professionals possess the technical skills to perform bedside care, diagnostic tests, collection of laboratory specimens, vital signs, phlebotomy, EKG’s, infection control, and more. The Patient Care Technician course at Rockland BOCES is designed for the Nursing Assistant/Aide who wants to progress his or her career, improve his or her current skills and become a more competitive candidate for employment. Students will learn about the care of animals as well as how to recognize signs of illness and disease. This program also covers interpersonal communication, interaction with clients and their animals, as well as how to assist the veterinarian during examinations. Administrative duties, such as fee collection, banking and accounts payable are also emphasized to provide the student with the skills necessary to maintain an effi cient front offi ce.
