WORDS THAT RHYME WITH ORANGE By Stacey Lane

SYNOPSIS: On a dull grey island, a clan of spiders all named Bob live a monotonous life of uniformity until a one-of-a-kind creature crashes down. This happy-go-lucky oddity brings with her tales of the outside world and delicious food. She praises the spiders’ uniqueness, despite their insistence that they are all the same. Their leader attempts to rein in the arachnid colony by declaring that anything different is evil and swearing that muddy leaves taste the same as every other food. With help from their peculiar new friend and their plucky hatchlings, the spiders learn to recognize and celebrate their individuality.

8: A what? LAMADODACADA: A lama-doda-cada. BOB 8: Wow! I’ve never seen anything like you before. LAMADODACADA: Neither have I. I’m the only one of my kind. BOB 2: How dreadful! LAMADODACADA: And who might you wonderful creatures be? BOB 1, BOB 2, BOB 3, BOB 4, BOB 5, BOB 6, BOB 7, AND BOB

8: Bob is our name. We’re all the same. BOB 1: Intruder, why have you come to our island? LAMADODACADA: On accident, actually. You see, I am highly

allergic to the color blue. BOB 3: I’ve never heard of such a thing. BOB 4: That’s because it’s utterly ridiculous. LAMADODACADA: So flying over the blue ocean left me feeling

quite seasick. I got dizzy and well, I crashed. So here I am. BOB 1: Then you best be leaving now. You don’t belong here. BOB 1, BOB 2, BOB 3, BOB 4, BOB 5, BOB 6, BOB 7, AND BOB

8: Goodbye!

LAMADODACADA: But since I’m already here, I was hoping you might be able to help me with my quest.

BOB 8: A quest? BOB 1: No. We can’t help you. You are an outsider. You are

different. BOB 1, BOB 2, BOB 3, BOB 4, BOB 5, BOB 6, BOB 7, AND BOB

8: We’re all the same. LAMADODACADA: But you don’t all look the same. BOB 1, BOB 2, BOB 3, BOB 4, BOB 5, BOB 6, BOB 7, AND BOB

8: Yes, we do! LAMADODACADA: I mean, sure, you’re all spiders, but aren’t you

different kinds of― BOB 2: How dare you! LAMADODACADA: No, I think it’s great. Why would you want to look

like everyone else? That’d be boring. BOB 1: You are questioning our way of life. ATTACK! The spiders spin a web around the LAMADODACADA. BOB 1, BOB 2, BOB 3, BOB 4, BOB 5, BOB 6, BOB 7, AND BOB 8

Bob is our name. We’re all the same. We always agree, That’s why we’re happy. Being alike is good. We are understood. We eat the same foods. We share the same moods. We have the same dream. We’re on the same team. We feel no shame, For we’re the same. We’re identical spiders, Who don’t like outsiders.

LAMADODACADA: Okay. Okay. I get it. I can tell when I’m not wanted. If you will just help me with my quest, then I will be on my merry way.

BOB 8: What is your quest? LAMADODACADA: My quest is to find a word that rhymes with

orange. BOB 7: Smorange? BOB 1: There is no such thing. BOB 2, BOB 3, BOB 4, BOB 5, AND BOB 6: No such thing! LAMADODACADA: Perhaps. But that’s not going to stop me from

looking. BOB 7: How about brorange? BOB 6: That is not a word. BOB 7: What about florange? BOB 6: That’s not a word, either, Bob. BOB 7: Man! This is tricky. BOB 4: Tricky?! It’s utterly absurd. There are no words that rhyme

with orange. BOB 6: Everybody knows that. BOB 2: You are looking for a word that does not exist. BOB 1: Your quest is impossible. LAMADODACADA: You thought a lamadodacada didn’t exist either

until I crashed into your island. Nothing is impossible. BOB 8: But why do you want to find a word that rhymes with orange? LAMADODACADA: Alas, it is my life-long quest. You see, orange is

my favorite color. It’s bright and cheerful and a bit unusual. Orange and I are a lot alike. We both have no matches, at least none that I’ve been able to find so far.

BOB 5: How lonely. LAMADODACADA: Plus, oranges are especially scrumptious.

Almost as scrumptious as strudels. BOB 7 AND BOB 8: What’s a strudel? LAMADODACADA: What’s a strudel?! Only the best food in the

entire world. The very best. And I happen to have some with me. Want to try one?

BOB 8: Yes!

BOB 1, BOB 2, BOB 3, BOB 4, BOB 5, BOB 6, AND BOB 7: No! BOB 1: Everything tastes exactly the same as everything else. BOB 6: Everyone knows that. BOB 2: So there’s no point in ever trying anything new. BOB 8: I’d like to try it please, Miss Lama-cama― LAMADODACADA: Lamadodacada. BOB 8: Right. BOB 5: No, Bob! Don’t do it. It’s just a trick to squish you. LAMADODACADA: No, it’s not. Here have a taste. BOB 8: Wow! This is incredible! It’s like nothing I’ve ever tasted

before. LAMADODACADA: I told you. BOB 1: And I told you that everything tastes the same. BOB 8: But it doesn’t. BOB 1: How dare you disagree! BOB 1, BOB 2, BOB 3, BOB 4, BOB 5, BOB 6, AND BOB 7: We

never disagree. BOB 6: Never ever. No matter what. BOB 2: Shame on you, Bob. BOB 1: Bob, have you forgotten who you are? BOB 8: No. I just like the way this strudel tastes. It tastes different. BOB 1, BOB 2, BOB 3, BOB 4, BOB 5, BOB 6, AND BOB 7:

Different is bad! BOB 8: Why? BOB 1: As long as everyone and everything is the same, no one can

make fun of anyone else. Trust me, Bob, everyone and everything that is different from us is evil.

BOB 2: Everything. BOB 6: Absolutely everything. BOB 4: Evil, indeed. LAMADODACADA: But I’m different. BOB 1, BOB 2, BOB 4, BOB 5, BOB 6, AND BOB 7: Exactly. BOB 8: The lala-dodo-cola― LAMADODACADA: Lamadodacada. BOB 8: The lada-cada - whatever she’s called - she’s not evil. LAMADODACADA: Why, thank you.

BOB 8: And strudels are not evil. LAMADODACADA: Definitely not. They’re delicious. If you’d just try

them, I’m sure you’d agree. They’re even yummier than ice cream. BOB 8: Ice cream? BOB 1: There is no such thing as ice cream! BOB 2, BOB 4, BOB 5, BOB 6, AND BOB 7: No such thing! BOB 6: Everyone knows that. BOB 4: It’s just a legend. LAMADODACADA: Ice cream is real and it’s really good! BOB 3: My great-great grandmother, Carmela, tasted ice cream

once. BOB 8: Wow! BOB 7: Wait a second! Carmela! I thought all spiders were named

Bob. BOB 1: All spiders are named Bob. That’s the way it always has been

and always will be. BOB 3: Now you know that’s not true, Bob. Long ago before we lived

on this island- BOB 7: Wait! There was a time when we spiders didn’t live on this

island? BOB 3: Oh, yes. Spiders used to― BOB 1: Enough! Let’s not talk about the past. There is nothing we

can learn from it. BOB 2: Absolutely nothing! BOB 4: Bob is right. It was horrible. All the other animals were so

mean to us. BOB 7: You mean there were other animals? I thought we spiders

were the only ones. BOB 1: We are the only ones! BOB 3: No, no. There were more kinds of animals than you could

ever imagine. There were monkeys and squirrels and- BOB 7 AND BOB 8: Wow! BOB 8: What’s a monkey? BOB 7: What’s a squirrel? BOB 2: You kids ask too many questions. BOB 1: We do not talk about the past.

BOB 3: But my great-great grandmother said it was so beautiful. BOB 4: No it wasn’t. My great-great grandfather Bob said- BOB 3: Your great-great grandfather was named Andrew and you

know it! BOB 4: Well, anyway, he said that all the other animals were terrible.

They said spiders were weird. They said we were ugly. They said we were gross. They were scared of us. And they always tried to squish us.

BOB 5: I don’t want to be squished! BOB 1: No one will be squished. We are all safe now. Safe on our

island where we are all exactly the same in every single way. The eggs begin to crack open. BOB 4: Our eggs! BOB 6: They’re hatching! BOB 1: Don’t let this outsider near our babies. They will be terrified to

see something as strange as her! The spiders quickly circle the LAMADODACADA, tying her up with the web. FRED: (To the LAMADODACADA.) Mama? BOB 1: No. That’s not your mother. JIMMY: (To the LAMADODACADA.) Mama! BOB 2: How could that bizarre thing be your mother? She looks

nothing like you! LARRY: (To the LAMADODACADA.) Mama! FRED, JIMMY, AND LARRY: Mama! BOB 1: Bob, Bob, and Bob! Stop that! BOB 2: Stay away from that creepy creature! BOB 8: See, these little ones aren’t scared of what’s different. Why

should we be? FRED: Feed us, Mama! LAMADODACADA: Here, try a strudel, my tiny new friends. BOB 1 AND BOB 2: No!

FRED, JIMMY, AND LARRY: Yummy! More! More! More! BOB 1: Here, kids. Eat this muddy leaf. It tastes exactly the same as

a strudel. FRED: Nope! LARRY: Nope! JIMMY takes a small bite of the leaf. JIMMY: Ewwwhhhh! Yucky! Yucky! Yucky! More yummies, please,

Mama! BOB 3: I’d like to try a taste of that strudel if you don’t mind, Miss

Lamadodacada. LAMADODACADA: Certainly, my friend. BOB 7: Me too! BOB 6: Me three! BOB 5: What’s the harm! BOB 4: Eh, why not? BOB 2: Well, if everyone else is doing it. The spiders untie the LAMADODACADA. She passes out strudels. BOB 5: How tasty! BOB 3: Delicious! BOB 4: Indeed. BOB 2: Unbelievable! BOB 6: This is the best thing I’ve ever eaten. BOB 8: Told you. BOB 7: This is awesome! Want another bite, Fred? FRED: Yummy in my tummy! BOB 4: Who’s Fred? BOB 7: That’s what I just named this little dude. FRED: Yeah! BOB 7: He looks like a Fred. BOB 1: Wait! You can’t do that, Bob. BOB 7: Sure, I can, Bob. I just did. BOB 8: How about we call this one Jimmy?

JIMMY: Yippee! BOB 3: And I’ll name you Larry, after my dear great-great

grandfather. LARRY: Goody! BOB 1: No! No! No! You can’t do that! Bob is our name. We’re all the

same. BOB 8: Open your eyes, Bob. We’re not all the same. BOB 3: And that’s something to celebrate! FRED, JIMMY, AND LARRY: Hooray! BOB 1: You’re making a terrible mistake. That ugly gross weird

outsider is going to make fun of you! BOB 8: Bob, you’re the only one that’s making fun of anyone. LAMADODACADA: Well, I believe my work here is done. It’s time

for me to continue on my quest. BOB 3: Goodbye, my friend. BOB 8: Sorry we couldn’t help you with your quest, Miss Lodydody-

whatever. LAMADODACADA: That’s alright. The best part of the quest is the

journey. BOB 7: Maybe you’d have better luck finding a word that rhymes

with purple.
