Waterworld isn’t just the name of a science fiction movie, it is also one of the off-site activities at JamBe 2013. Sailing, raft building, kayaking and the ‘adventure trophy’ were the ticket activities for Waterworld. But there was also plenty of time to do whatever you like in and around the ‘Zilvermeer’ (Silver Lake) in Mol: sunbathing, swimming and going down the waterslide… The arrival of Magnatio made such an impression that even the regional television (RTV) came to have a look.

After preparing their lunches, Magnatio left for the Silver Lake. Sadly, there was a problem with the buses: after having to wait for an hour, they finally arrived to take Magnatio to Mol. Unfortunately not all the activities could be done because only one hour remained for the ticket activities.

Trek ’t je niet aan! (Don’t worry ! – Ne t’en fais pas !)

“ C’est génial ! Super! It’s fun!” These were some of the reactions by the sailors and raft builders enjoying their activities. They didn’t mind the delay and decided to make the best out of it. And they were right. Building their own raft and then testing it: the best way to show off their skills to other scouts and guides. Or what about getting on a pedalo? Once the scouts got the hang of it, it was about being the best and the fastest!

went away and the sun came out. So, if Waterworld is still waiting for you, don’t forget your sunglasses, sunscreen and maybe a hat, because the heat is on!

Those not too fond about water activities found their bidding at the adventure trophy. Climbing on a platform in a tree to do a death ride: to some it felt a bit like flying! Still, gradually, the risk of getting wet during this adventure trail got bigger. Be sure to check it out!

With enough wind in their sails, some scouts and guides took a little sailing trip, after being told by the supervisors how to turn around the buoys and how to get the wind in their sails.

Back on the beach, next to the sunbathers, a beach volleyball game and a game of football were taking place. And let’s not forget the water slide and the fountains: fun is guaranteed at the Silver Lake!

Super, zoveel talen door elkaar. Maar op JamBe 2013 gebruiken we vooral Nederlands, English et le Français. Pas mal. What kind of problems have you discovered on your way… with all the other languages?

How do you say ajuin?In de keuken van het IST-restaurant is het simpel. Tanja: “Als we een woord niet kennen, dan lopen we met bijvoorbeeld een grote ajuin door de keuken om te vragen: “how do you say ‘ajuin’ in your language?”. Tot nu toe hebben we nog geen ingrediënten door elkaar gehaald.”

There has been some confusion in the kitchen about the ‘chocopot’. “A lot of people here don’t know what choco is. We asked them to put the chocopot on the table but they had no clue what I was asking. The same with our bouillonblokskes (stock cubes).”

Ook in de scoutsshop is het niet altijd even makkelijk. Julia (Engeland): “Maar we laten de truien gewoon zien. Om te passen heb je niet veel woorden nodig natuurlijk.” De manière générale, presque tout le monde parle très bien l’Anglais. Et sinon, on se débrouille assez bien avec des gestes.

Oí ! Vamos tentar de comunicar en español. No entiendas Ingles ?” – “Muy poco.”

Como tentas de comunicar?- “Con ayuda. Ou un poco en Ingles. Os otras ayudan bien.”

But Jenn (IST from England) is chatting away in Spanish like it’s her mother tongue, while she’s watching the shield game. “I learned Spanish at the University of Aberdeen and I studied in Santiago de Compostela as well. As for French: I speak French all the time at work, because I also studied in Brussels. Belgium is my second home.” Jenn is a true language expert!

IMPORTANT

The next days, it will be very warm. NEVER leave your food outside: you can get very sick. Bring leftovers back to the FDC. Please, please, please recycle according to the RULES! Use the right bins.

If you find a tick on your body, please don’t remove it yourself. It is not safe, as there can be parts of the tick that stay under your skin! Your sub camp staff can help you remove it in the right way.

Sub camp scarf & pass (with your name): wear it AT ALL TIMES. For your safety, it is very important that you wear them. We have to recognize you as a participant or a leader, not as a stranger.

Les prochains jours, il fera très chaud. Ne laissez JAMAIS votre nourriture dehors : vous pourriez vous rendre malades. Ramenez ce que vous n’avez pas consommé au CRA. Veillez également à trier vos déchets selon les règles; utilisez les bonnes poubelles.

Si tu trouves une tique sur ton corps, ne l’enleve pas toi-même, car la tête de la tique peut rester sous ta peau. Ton staff de sous-camp peut t’aider à la retirer proprement.

Foulard de sous-camp et votre pass (avec ton nom) : portez-les TOUT LE TEMPS. Pour ta sécurité et pour celle des autres, il est important que tu les portes. Nous devons te reconnaître comme participant ou comme animateur, pas comme un étranger.

Het wordt de volgende dagen ontzettend warm. Laat GEEN voedingsresten achter, je kan er zwaar ziek van worden. Breng overschotjes steeds naar het VVC. En recycleer volgens de REGELS. Gebruik de juiste vuilnisbak.

Een teek ? Haal ‘m niet zelf weg. Het is niet veilig, want zijn pootjes kunnen onder je huid blijven zitten. Je subkampstaf zal de teek op de juiste manier verwijderen.

Draag STEEDS je das en naamkaartje, voor je veiligheid. Je bent hier immers als deelnemer of leider, en geen vreemdeling.

Wall climbing

In Let’s go wild, some of the participants have conquered their fear of heights.

José (Spain)“I’m proud of us, because we climbed the climbing wall. Apart from our own muscles, we also needed the help of our friends, who had their feet firmly on the ground. It was real team work!”

Joris (France)« L’été passé, lors de notre camp en Corse, on s’est un peu perdus. On marchait en patrouille, sans les animateurs et on s’est retrouvés à faire le GR20 en Corse. A un moment, on a du descendre une falaise avec nos sacs sur le dos. Toute une aventure ! Nos animateurs n’en revenaient pas. Il faut dire qu’on a pris des risques... Mais maintenant, c’est un bon souvenir, et ça fait des choses à rencontrer en rentrant de camp

! Ici, je viens d’escalader une pile de 17 bacs avec l’aide de mon groupe. Je crois qu’on a égalé le record... »

Jef (België) “Ik had nog nooit op bierbakken geklommen. Ik heb er acht gestapeld en beklommen! Mijn leider, Sebastiaan, heeft mij geholpen. Sander, de sympathieke IST, bekommerde zich over de veiligheid van de activiteit.”

Que penses-tu de tes chefs?

Simon Zytka (France)« Ils sont très sympas. Pour préparer le JamBe on a du chercher des subventions. On l’a fait tous ensemble. On a fait ça avant de venir ici. La conséquence c’est: on doit faire des interviews ici pour notre projet. »

Louise Aagaard (Denmark)“I have really good leaders, I like them. They don’t act as if we are children, but they treat us as grown ups. As equals, even. Some years ago, some others came here to and really liked the camp (Flamboree). That’s why we thought it was a good idea. You get to know other people. The rain in the night was not good but until now I

enjoyed the camp. The opening show was good! The end was not really clear to me, but I enjoyed the fire men. That was so cool. Really, I didn’t expect something like that.”

Yara (België)“We hebben toffe leiding, ze zijn alle drie van dezelfde leeftijd en ook buiten de scouts zijn ze de beste vrienden. Om ons voor te bereiden hebben ze voor ons een boekje gemaakt. Er stonden vertalingen van zinnen in het Engels en het Spaans. We moesten ook leren om tenten op verhogen te bouwen en zo van die dingen.”

Ook buiten JamBe 2013 geraken we stilaan bekend! We kwamen op VTM NIEUWS op maandag en dinsdag stonden we in Het Laatste Nieuws. Op woensdag komen we op RTV. Uiteraard kan je alles volgen op Twitter en Facebook!

Koken met ... Alsace

Il est 19h, il pleut, et nous rejoignons un groupe de scouts alsaciens en train de préparer leur repas du soir. Il devient vite évident que les Alsaciens aiment manger, et qu’ils sont intarissables sur le sujet.

« Pour le World Village, on a prévu de partager un plat typique d’Alsace, le Baeckeoffe. C’est du porc, de l’agneau, des légumes et des patates qui mijotent avec du vin blanc dans un plat en terre cuite. Nous serons heureux de partager ceci avec les autres participants ! », nous confient Timothée (17), Silvain (17) et Arnaud (43) avant de poursuivre en nous parlant d’autres spécialités locales : « La choucroute, la baguettine, la tarte flambée, la forêt noire, le kugelhopf, les bretzel, le munster, le Fleischschnacka*... Tout ça, c’est alsacien ! »

Est-ce qu’il y a des différences entre ici et chez vous ?« En France, il n’y a pas de repas sans pain. En Belgique, ce n’est pas le cas, alors il arrive encore à l’un ou l’autre de se demander où est le pain quand on passe à table. Mais on s’y fait ! Ce soir, on compte également se servir d’un bénédicité que nous a appris un groupe d’espagnols ce midi. »

“Ik ben Jeroen en ik sta in voor de

Veiligheid”

Vandaag brachten we een bezoek aan ploeg Veiligheid, een klein maar onmisbaar team op JamBe. In de voormiddag is het rustig in de kapel, waar het coördinatiecentrum is opgesteld. Tjerk, Jan, Dries en Jorg liggen immers in hun bed; de eerste twee om zich voor te bereiden op een nachtdienst, de laatste twee om ervan te bekomen.

Daarom staat Mathias me te woord. Hij houdt al enkele dagen de dispatch draaiende. “Van hieruit coördineren we heel de werking van team Veiligheid. De dispatch is 24 uur per dag bemand, we staan altijd klaar om in te grijpen bij problemen. Hoe minder ik hier te doen heb, hoe beter dus.”

Mathias stuurt de stewards aan die op het terrein de boel in de gaten houden. “Ze zorgen er voor dat de regels worden nageleefd, zodat het kamp voor iedereen vlot verloopt. Zo moeten we er iedereen telkens opnieuw aan herinneren dat je je das en je badge moet omhangen!”

Alles onder controleTeam Veiligheid staat niet alleen paraat bij problemen, maar bemant ook de EHBO-post. Daar staan professionele verplegers en een dokter klaar voor kleine en grote pijntjes. Reinhilde en Jorg (pas uit bed) verzorgen daar een ongelukkige deelnemer uit Spanje, die geraakt werd aan zijn lip. “Dit is één van de meer ernstige gevallen die we tot nu toe gehad hebben. Voorlopig blijft het grotendeels beperkt tot insectenbeten en schaafwonden. Niets ernstigs dus”, vertelt Reinhilde.

Mijn kennismaking met team Veiligheid eindigt bij Jeroen, opperhoofd van het team. Hij is zeer tevreden over zijn medewerkers: “Ze kloppen lange shiften, maar de sfeer is goed. Alles loopt volgens plan, al begint de vermoeidheid toch toe te slaan. Bij ons moet er namelijk veel stand by gestaan worden, wat best slopend kan zijn. Maar hoe minder er gebeurt, hoe beter natuurlijk. En moest er toch iets gebeuren, zijn we er op voorbereid!”

Jeroen sluit af met woorden van lof voor hun enige Franstalige medewerker, Cédric. Hij werkt als steward maar is als getraind psycholoog ook beschikbaar als Luisterend oor. “Cédric heeft zijn draai gevonden. We doen allemaal ons best om ons verstaanbaar te maken en dat lijkt aardig te lukken.”

Cédric zelf beaamt dat. “Au début, j’étais un peu inquiet quant à la méthode de travail et gêné de ne pas connaître la langue et donc d’en “imposer” une autre à l’équipe, mais j’ai compris très vite que mes craintes n’étaient pas fondées. C’est juste un peu dommage que je ne comprends pas toujours les blagues en néerlandais.”
