    Trevelyan (1910-1988) was well-known for surrealist prints in the1930s. He worked in Paris andLondon, became head of theetching department at the RoyalCollege of Art and was himself ahighly influential teacher of suchstudents as David Hockney.

    A pair of much earlier oils, late18th-century studies of amounted jockey in silks, alsofound a ready buyer at theBingham Hall saleroom inCirencester. They had come fromthe house of one of Cirencestersoldest farming families and mayeven have depicted horses ownedby the family in an earlier

    generation. Telephone andinternet bids were taken for thepair, which finally went under thehammer at 1,800.

    A limited edition screenprint byJohn Piper (1903-1992) depictingthree Suffolk church towers in atriptych format on marbledbackground also made a goodshowing in the modern art sale.

    A very familiar subject for theartist, it was number 52/70 in oneof his highly collectable limitededitions and sold above estimateat 950. John Piper was an officialwar artist during the SecondWorld War and later producedmany studies of church towers.

    Art Deco bronzes and ivories arestill more than holding their ownin todays market and this wasevident in the competition for acharming Ferdinand Preiss

    carved ivory figure of a childfeeding a dove on outstretchedhand,. Made in about 1930, it wassigned and stood on a black slateplinth. Measuring only 19 cmhigh, it soldfor 1,900.

    A 20th century Irish Schoolbronze half-length figure of aballerina found a buyer at 400,while a pair of 15cm high LibertyTudric pewter candlesticks, eachon three curved supports,realised 400.

    There were five lots two houses,two parcels of woodland and apasture field.

    Lot one was six acres of ancient andsemi-natural woodland atCoddington with a guide price of30,00035,000. Bidding started at30,000 and quickly rose to 62,000 more than 10,000 per acre. It was soldto a local land owner.

    Lot two was half-an-acre ofwoodland on the Malvern Hills whichmade 7,000. A parcel of 4.6 acres ofland at Ryton was then sold for inexcess of the guide at 38,000.

    Lot four, the Cottage at Woodendwas described as a rare gem off thebeaten track. The guide price was100,000 120,000 and bidding was

    very strong. It eventually sold for arespectable 150,000.

    Lot five was Willavis, a four-bedroom bungalow at Shuthonger,near Tewkesbury, in need of work andstanding on one-third of an acre ofgrounds. Th e property did not reachits reserve and is still available forpurchase.
