1950s Heritage Oyster Jetty used by local endangered shorebirds and internationally protected migratory birds as a roosting site. To preserve heritage and protect this bird habitat, the roof was

recently replaced and structural repairs were undertaken.

3.6m wide elevated shared boardwalk for pedestrians and cyclists. Boardwalk has been designed to have minimal impact on mangroves

Sutherland Shire Council is transforming the foreshore of Woolooware Bay between Atkinson Road and Alexander Avenue, Taren Point. These works will provide a shared pathway for pedestrians and cyclists with multiple viewing platforms providing undisturbed views across Botany Bay. Endangered ecological communities will be protected and enhanced. A greater awareness of local heritage and the environment will also be key aspect of the project.

The proposed new works include construction of:

• 3.6m wide boardwalks between the mangroves• 3.6m wide shared pathways on ground• three viewing platforms including interpretive signage and

seating; one platform is shaded

• a sand island for bird sanctuary• bird screen for habitat protection including artistic

interpretation• environmentally friendly sea walls• salt marsh planting and installation of protection fencing• extended drainage• drinking fountain and bike rack• landscaping and planting with passive recreation zones

off the path. This area is an important link of a greater foreshore trail from La Perouse to Kurnell which gives public access to previously closed foreshore land. Resident and migratory shorebirds of international significance will be protected from the pedestrians and cyclists through the construction of a bird hide and an

off‑shore sand island. The Heritage Oyster Jetty has been repaired to protect heritage values and secure the known roosting habitat for shorebirds. The pathway alignment has been chosen to minimise harm to mangroves and provide opportunities to plant endangered salt marsh. Interpretive signage will be installed to educate visitors of the environmental and historical importance of the site, including the migratory bird habitat, the 1950s oyster industry, the Heritage Oyster Jetty and the Heritage Post War Nissen Hut.
