AUCTION FORRAISING FUNDS

The PTA at Hunter’s PointMiddle School decided to bank onthe beautiful skyline view and hosttheir first evening gala to raisefunds for the school. The “View ofthe Skyline Gala & Silent Auc-tion” will be held at Hunter’s Pointmiddle school on April 15, 2016.

The committee is optimisticthe tickets will sell out but thePTA is still in the asking stages of

assembling donated auction prizesand tastings dishes from stores, restaurants, and shops within itscommunity. “It is a unique oppor-tunity for local restaurants andbusinesses to advertise themselvesand give back to the community atthe same time,” says the PTApresident, Paul Cynamon.

Undeniably, the Hunter’sPoint student body is a mecca offive neighborhoods. Young stu-dents travel from within L.I.C.,neighboring Sunnyside andWoodside but also from Astoria

and Jackson Heights. Everystudent’s school loyalty is im-pressive - from the debate to thevolleyball teams, as their proudparents will attest, just dealingwith the 7 train to school everyday is an achievement.

If your business would like todonate tasting samples for theevening or goods or gift certificatesfor the silent auction, please contactthe Hunter’s Point CommunityMiddle School PTA atHPCMSPTA@gmail. com or call718-609-3300 for more information.

A HOPPY DAY

(continued from front page)

by Anne Walsh

The Sunnyside-Woodside Li-ons Club held their annual Easter/Spring Party for the children in thecommunity at St Teresa’s Churchon Saturday March 19th. They gotto work on various arts and crafts, get their faces painted, hunt forfilled Easter eggs, play games with

their friends and snack on pretzels(juices, water) and of course Eastercandy. Each child also received awell-filled goody bag to take home.

The biggest surprise was a visitfrom the Easter Bunny who gra-ciously posed with the children and/or their parents for photos galore.A happy “hoppy” day for all!

A MIL-LIONREASONSTO INVESTThe city’s library presidents

joined advocates and elected offi-cials on the steps of City Hall to urgecity leaders to restore public libraryfunding to Fiscal Year 2008 levelsand address a serious maintenancecrisis plaguing its 217 branches.

The rally launched the KeepInvesting in Libraries campaign - asequel to last year’s successful In-vest in Libraries Campaign - andmarked the release of a new report,Still Overdue: New Yorkers NeedMore Funding for Libraries. Thereport details how last year’s one-year $43 million increase in cityoperating funds greatly benefitedthe public, but finds libraries arestill not meeting their full potentialin fighting inequality and offeringopportunities to all New Yorkersdue to crumbling infrastructure andthe lingering effects of $65 millionin budget cuts since FY 2008.

Following the rally, the librarypresidents testified at the Prelimi-nary Budget Hearing to outline theirfunding requests, which include:

* A restoration of the $65 millioncut since FY 2008, allowing librariesto increase staff, services, and pro-gramming addressing the word gap,the digital divide, and so on

* Restoring last year’s $43 mil-lion increase into the budget, aswell as any other additional operat-ing funding (the mayor has alreadyput a portion of that funding intohis preliminary budget for FY 2017)

* Capital investment to addressthe over $250 million in urgentmaintenance needs

The Keep Investing in Librariescampaign is a partnership betweenthe City’s three library systems -Brooklyn Public Library, New YorkPublic Library, and Queens Library- as well as DC37 and library sup-porters across the City. Last year, the preceding Invest in Librariescampaign resulted in a historic one-year $43 million funding allocationthat ensured citywide six-day ser-vice, additional Sunday hours, andmore programming. Libraries alsoreceived $300 million in the 10-year capital budget, which has al-ready been allocated to projects inthe five boroughs.

The city’s libraries are enor-mously grateful to the city for thishistoric investment, and hope tobuild on the momentum to secure afull $65 million restoration in Fis-cal Year 2017. The funding wouldallow libraries to do even more tosupport city priorities, such as earlyliteracy, immigrant services, clos-ing the digital divide, and so on.

“I’m proud to have been achampion for libraries for nearly20 years. And prouder still to havehelped lead the fight for the his-toric funding level achieved lastyear,” said Queens Council Mem-ber and Council Majority LeaderJimmy Van Bramer. “The $43million restoration to libraries lastyear was historic & long overdue. That funding increased allowed sixday service to be restored citywide, but there is still so much more weneed to do to make sure librariesare at full capacity. The mayorshould baseline all of the fundingrestored last year and I supportrestoring the last $23 million forlibraries to bring them back to pre-recession level funding. That is awise investment for our City.”

URGE TO ADDRESS LOOMINGDOCTOR SHORTAGE

Ahead of what is known as “MatchDay,” where medical students across thecountry learn where they will go for theirnext stage of training, Rep. Joe Crowley(D-Queens, the Bronx), Vice Chair of theDemocratic Caucus, called on Congress tobring up his Resident Physician ShortageReduction Act to alleviate the bottleneck indoctor training that is standing in the way ofaddressing the looming doctor shortage. The bill has over 114 co-sponsors in theHouse of Representatives.

After graduating medical school, futuredoctors are required to complete a residencyin their chosen specialty. Medical schoolenrollment is growing, yet the number ofresidency positions is still subject to anoutdated cap, meaning that many of thesemedical school graduates will have no placeto finish their required training. In 2015,nearly 1,000 U.S. medical school graduatesdid not initially match to a position, a num-ber that is likely to increase in coming years.

“Match Day should be a time to cel-ebrate the future of medicine, yet year afteryear, we see too many graduating medicalstudents left without a residency positionsimply because there are not enough slotsavailable,” said Rep. Crowley. “The out-dated limit on the number of doctors that canbe trained each year ties the hands of ourmedical schools, our teaching hospitals, and, quite frankly, our future. I urge my col-leagues to take up this important legislationso we can take steps now to address thelooming doctor shortage.”

According to the Association of Ameri-can Medical Colleges, the U.S. is expectedto face a stunning shortage of 90,000 doc-tors by 2025, including shortages in bothprimary and specialty care. Additionally, last year, an investigation by the Depart-ment of Veterans affairs concluded that manyVA hospitals do not have enough primarycare doctors, contributing to long wait timesfor care.

Crowley and Rep. Charles Boustany,Jr., M.D. (R-LA) reintroduced the Resi-dent Physician Shortage Reduction Act in2015. The bill would increase the numberof Medicare-supported hospital residencypositions by 15,000 (3,000 slots per year, over five years), bringing the total num-ber of slots available to approximately102,000. The legislation also places anemphasis on expanding residency slots inprimary care and other specialties neces-sary to meet the needs of a growing civil-ian and veteran population.

Crowley first introduced the ResidentPhysician Shortage Reduction Act in 2009and again in subsequent Congresses.

The legislation is supported by overtwo dozen leading national organiza-tions, including the American HospitalAssociation, American Medical Asso-ciation, American Osteopathic Asso-ciation, American Association of Col-leges of Osteopathic Medicine, andAssociation of American Medical Col-leges, as well as numerous physicianspecialty groups.

SUNNYSIDE FILMMAKERSHORING UP NATUREIN JAMAICA BAY

by Mary Caulfield

Sunnyside filmmaker DanHendrick shook so many hands in themoments before the premiere of hismovie, Jamaica Bay Lives, he re-sembled nothing so much as a joyfulwhirl-gig in a big wind.

He was standing at the entrance tothe sold-out Sumner Redstone Theaterin the Museum of the Moving Imageon March 17th. He greeted residentsfrom communities around the bay, movie lovers enjoying the 7th AnnualQueens World Film Festival, AudubonSociety members, people from the NYCPark’s Department, members of thepress, family, friends and neighbors.

They had come to see the results offive-years’ labor to produce his movie. While working in the print world edit-ing a Queens-wide newspaper, Dan’scuriosity drew him to the life in andaround Jamaica Bay, which lies be-tween the Rockaway peninsula and themarshlands that compose parts of thesouthern edges of Brooklyn and Queens.

He and director David Siegal docu-ment the local then state and nationalefforts to restore health and vitality tothe watery part of the 26,000-acreGateway National Recreation Area. Itis the biggest national park in the fiveboroughs and is larger than Central,Prospect and Van Cortlandt parks com-bined. It earns the distinction of beingthe only wildlife refuge in the countryone can reach by subway train.

As Susan Sarandon narrates, view-ers learn over the course of 76-minutesthat body of water has overcome somehuman-induced health challenges butfaces new and perhaps bigger ones. The city stopped dumping in the shal-low refuge to over 300 species of mi-

grating birds, fish and insect life. Thathelped. But it also gave 4,930 acres toKennedy International Airport andabout 19 square miles around its pe-rimeter to be filled in for industrial, commercial and residential uses. Awater filtration plant on the shorelineof Brooklyn spills nitrogen-filled wastewater in the water. And heavier, highertides resulting from worldwide carbonemissions may be the force destroyingmany of the grassy islands that dot itsexpanse and harbor life among theirgreen blades and heavy root systems.

Although the challenges are real, the bay has many who champion itsfuture. Some of those leading the effortcome from a community entirely sur-rounded by the waters and marsh is-lands of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Ref-uge, Broad Channel. Among the littletown’s residents are those who descendfrom people who spent summers theredoing what the Lenape and Jamecopeople did before them: harvesting thebounty of seafood in its waters.

When Hurricane Sandy threat-ened in October of 2012, they reliedon generations of local knowledge toprepare the island to weather thestorm. But the bay they thought theyknew was transformed into a waterybattering ram that caught everyoneby surprise. Undaunted, they rebuiltand continue to lobby for measuresthat will preserve the natural beautyfor future generations.

Well received by the audience at itspremiere, Jamaica Bay Lives will screenin the Washington, D.C. Environmen-tal Film Festival on March 24th, thePrinceton Environmental Film Festivalon April 7th, and the Palm Beach Inter-national Film Festival April on 10th.

Queens residents Debra Tharringtonand Regina Shanley support thrilled, but tired, producer Dan Hendrick.

WOODSIDE YOUTH PRESS EAST

by David Rosasco

As the longer hours of daylightpermit ever-expanding distancesfor the youth of this community toconduct their work, the sense ofaccomplishment in having restoredan entire United States zip code topristine condition does not appearto waver.

Alexis Melendez, 7th gradestudent at St. Sebastian School,in considering the choice be-tween doing nothing or continu-ing on, observed “Well, we havemade so much progress today, but I’m sure we’ll find things todo even when we return in thedirection we came from.”

The youth gathered as has be-come natural to them on Saturday,March 19 to do just that, first arriv-ing in good order at 58th Street and39th Avenue, to once more cleanand eliminate graffiti that appearsfrom time to time under the myriadof underpasses in this area. A sepa-rate crew from their numbers wastasked with specific graffiti re-moval assignments along 39th Av-

enue westbound until it mergeswith Woodside Avenue headingwest around 52nd Street.

After an afternoon intermis-sion, the youth, in greater numbersthan in the small hours, wheeledeastward to Queens Boulevard, extending their work again acrossthe border into Elmhurst at JacobusStreet, just east of 76th Street, achieving a new milestone in theeasterly direction, while, in rapidspeed, removing all known in-stances of graffiti from the third ofthree bridges.

This particular bridge runningdiagonal across Queens Boulevard, presented a challenge in both itslength across the boulevard andthe total surface area with graffitito be removed, resulted in not muchof a challenge at all, as the youthformed separate crews based onprior experience to perform theirtask with precision and efficiencyin time.

Meanwhile, individual assign-ments were taken on by ZaraClelland, 7th grade student at St.

Sebastian School, whosinglehandedly this day did moreto restore the confidence of theresidents than thousands of the resi-dents ever have, resulting in sepa-rate fixtures being repainted andpermitting the project for the dayto be achieved in depth.

With daylight quickly disap-pearing, remaining youth crossesback across the border in the direc-tion from whence they came, withtransit stops at 70th and 67th Streetsalong Queens Boulevard to removeadditional graffiti and clean the com-munity garden they have staked somuch manpower in rehabilitating.

Jackie Alvarez, 11th grade stu-dent at the Dominican Academy, and one of the leaders of the youth, remarked, after a long day of tri-umphs over waiting for someoneelse to do what this team of allstars does almost without an af-terthought, “Every time I thinkwe’ll never finish, or we’ll runout of supplies, but every time wemake it home with everythingdone. That’s freedom.”
