ACADEMICS Anticipation was in the air with the new faculty members, the new
demerit system, and the evaluation which was to come in March. As we returned from a restful vacation we found several new teachers along with the old stand-bys. The demerit system was brought into Woodrow to reduce suspensions and promote self-discipline. This year marked the culmination of our self study. This study, which started in 1979, pointed out the strengths and concerns of Woodrow's educational program.
Thanks to the hard work and studying of the students all previous records were broken at the fall Smarty Party. There were 158 students attending, of which 41 % were 9th graders.
Just as the year bad begun, we ended the year anticipating the next year and the opportunities which awaited us.

STUDENT LIFE Is there life after 2:05? Just ask any Pac-Man fanatic. Pac-Man ate
its way into the hearts of Woodrow students. The only problem with Pac-Man was that it couldn't be carried to school. Not so with Rubik's cubes. Rubik's cubes were small enough to go anywhere, usually ending up in teachers' desks.
In January, snow and ice were on the ground "as well as in the air," causing us to miss almost two weeks of school. This provided a chance for everyone to catch up on soap operas and watch UVA basketball. As the snow melted, students escaped from home to see Raiders of the Lost Ark again and again and again.
Spring brought the yearly migration of ninth graders to the park with white cards in hand. As summer approached, students had mixed emotions. Some were looking forward to vacations while others were remembering the school year.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES Songs, newspapers, dragons, and scripts were in the air
for the first time in several years as new clubs were launched. After a year of absence, the choir returned with the help of choir director, Mrs. Smith. The drama club presented examples of theatrical fairytales to the student body and several elementary schools. Each week D and D players wove their way through tunnels and barely escaped imaginary monsters. After many long hours of writing, typing, and pasting, the newspaper staff produced several editions of the President's Paper. The chess club met once a week, learning skills and preparing for a school tournament at the end of the year.
In addition to these new activities, those that have existed for many years continued to thrive this year with the help and understanding of their sponsors.

SPORTS Cheers were in the air as Woodrow Wilson students turned out to show
support for our teams. Despite the different skills and abilities needed for the various sports at Woodrow, our teams all had enthusiasm and determination to do their best. Hours of try-outs, practice, and performance paid off in many victories. Special mention should go to the 1981 boys' baseball team and girls' tennis team for being the city runners-up in the championship and the boys' basketball team for winning the city championship.
Last spring Da rryl Ruben was the city champion in the · high jump.

The 1981-1982 boys' basketball team was outstanding. Although they had lost to Ruffner twice during the regular season, they were ready to face them in the championship. It was a close game, but Woodrow was prepared and fought hard enough to win 67-66. Martin Skelly won the MVP award. Darryl Ruben, Rodney Ratliff, and Chuck Beasley were also selected for the All-Tournament Team.

Mr. Joh n H a rris was the coach of the boys' basketball team. Unfortuna tely, this was his last season as the basketball coach. H e wants to spend ti me with his c hildren, teaching them how to play basketball and te nnis. But what a way to go out, with a winning season! Mr. Paul Barrell has been chosen as the coach for the bas ketba l l team next yea r. We want to welcome Mr. Barre ll and to tha nk Mr H arris for a great job'
