Dear Parents,

We live in a world surrounded by technology, and we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on understanding how technology works. However, only a small fraction of us are learning these skills. That’s why our entire school participated in the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during the week of December 17-21. More than 100 million students worldwide have also tried an Hour of Code!

Your students are ready and excited to learn these foundational 21st-century skills. We encourage you to talk to your child about their coding experience and the dance party they coded in class! Maybe they can even teach you a thing or two about coding and computer science! See http://hourofcode.com/us for details.

Intermediate students in Kimberly will also have the opportunity to expand on their coding abilities by joining our very own Computer Science Coding Club which will be offered after school in the spring. We look forward to giving our students these valuable learning experiences and cannot wait to see what they create with them!

Sincerely,

Emily Berndt Computer Applications Teacher Mapleview & Woodland Intermediate Schools

The Hour of Code is a global movement introducing tens of millions of students worldwide to computer science, inspiring kids to learn more, breaking stereotypes, and leaving them feeling empowered.

The largest learning event in history

During Computer Science Education WeekDecember 3-9, 2018

What is the Hour of Code?

A one-hour introduction to computer scienceThe Hour of Code began as a one-hour coding challenge to give students a fun first introduction to computer science and has become a global learning event, celebration, and awareness event. HourOfCode.com offers hundreds of one-hour activities in over 48 languages for kindergarten and up. Activities require no experience and can be run on browsers, tablets, and smartphones - some don’t require any computer at all.

Why computer science?

Computer science is foundationalComputer science is changing every industry on the planet. Every 21st-century student should have the opportunity to learn how to create technology. Computer science concepts also help nurture creativity and problem-solving skills to prepare students for any future career.

Economic opportunity for all Computing occupations are the fastest-growing, best paying, and now the largest sector of all new wages in the US. Every child deserves the opportunity to succeed.

Students also love it! Recent surveys show that among classes students “like a lot,” computer science and engineering rank near the top—only performing arts, art, and design are higher.

Beyond the Hour of Code

The Hour of Code is organized by Code.org, a public non-profit dedicated to expanding access to computer science and increasing participation by women and underrepresented students of color. The Hour of Code is celebrated during the annual Computer Science Education Week in December. Code.org®, the CODE logo and Hour of Code™ are trademarks of Code.org.

The Hour of Code has made huge strides in bringing computer science to all students

In the first Hour of Code four years ago, more girls tried computer science than have tried in the last 70 years!

Celebrities, tech visionaries and even Former President Obama support Hour of Code

● Every Apple Store in the world has hosted an Hour of Code. ● Hour of Code has been featured on Apple, Amazon, Google, YouTube, Yahoo!,

Bing, and Disney homepages. ● Celebrities Ashton Kutcher and Jessica Alba and tech leaders Sheryl Sandberg,

Bill Gates, and Jack Dorsey have talked with classrooms in live video chats. ● President Obama wrote his first line of code to kick off the Hour of Code in 2014,

and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau kicked off the Hour of Code 2016. ● Hour of Code students opened the NASDAQ at a special event in 2015. ● Over 300 partners have come together to support this grassroots campaign,

including The College Board, Microsoft, Infosys Foundation USA, Google, Salesforce, BlackRock, Verizon, Disney, Teach for America, Khan Academy, DonorsChoose.org, and more.

Together, we can solve the diversity gap in computer science

Women who try AP Computer Science in high school are ten times more likely to major in it in college, but females currently only make up 25% of high school CS classrooms, and those ratios don’t change in the workforce! An Hour of Code is a great place to start addressing the diversity gap and introducing computer science to more girls in an engaging and empowering way!

Elementary (920-739-3578). If you would like to donate or are

in need of some assistance with resources, you can contact

Mapleview or Westside. In addition to the clothes, Woodland is

frequently being offered ways to support our families if they

When to Keep Your Child Home

Children should be kept home from school when they don’t feel well. It is important to get the rest they need to

recover, and to prevent the spread of germs to other children and the staff. If you are unsure of when to keep your

child home, please contact the school nurse or your family medical provider.

The following symptoms may suggest a communicable disease. Children who have the following symptoms should

be kept home from school until a doctor has seen them, they no longer have symptoms indicating a communicable

disease or they have received treatment for at least 24 hours for certain diseases.

SORE THROAT

An oral temperature of 100.4 or higher indicates a fever. If your child has a temp of 100.4 or higher at school he/she will be sent home. Your child must be fever free for 24 hours without the use of a fever reducer (Tylenol or Ibuprofen product) before he/she returns to school.

If a fever is accompanied by a sore throat, stomach ache or head ache it may be strep throat. Strep throat is diagnosed by a throat culture obtained at a medical clinic. If your child is diagnosed with strep throat, your child must be on appropriate antibiotics for 24 hours and fever free for 24 hours without the use of a fever reducer (Tylenol or Ibuprofen product) before he/she returns to school.

If your child has an episode of vomiting and diarrhea at school, he/she will be sent home. Anyone with these symptoms should stay home until symptoms are absent for 24 hours.

A cough may be a sign of many different illnesses. If a cough is accompanied by a fever, sore throat, body aches or any other symptoms you should keep your child home. Any cough that lasts for more than several days should be discussed with a doctor.

Rashes and infected sores needed to be diagnosed by a medical provider. Many skin rashes such as impetigo, scabies, chicken pox, Fifth disease or Hand Foot and Mouth disease are very contagious. Students may return to school once the rash has been diagnosed and treated for 24 hours or cleared by a doctor. Open sores from illnesses such as chicken pox and impetigo may need to be covered at school with bandages for several days.

Symptoms that prevent the student from active participation is usual school activities OR student is requiring more care than school that can safely provide.
