MEET THE COACHING STAFFS: Gustavus Head Coach Mike Carroll is in his 13th season at the helm for the Gusties. He has compiled an overall record of 267-64-20 in 13 seasons on the bench and has the most coaching victories in the history of the program. Carroll, an Edina, Minn. native, competed in hockey and baseball at Minnesota State University-Mankato. After graduating with a degree in municipal recreation in 1982, Carroll played professional baseball in the Montreal Expos organization for two years.

Carroll is assisted by Steve Carroll (MSU-Mankato ‘81) - named one of the 10 greatest Mavericks in their men’s hockey program; Kirstin Peterson (Gustavus ‘11), a three-time All-American for the Gustavus women’s hockey program from 2008-11; and Matt Carroll, Mike’s son.

Now in his 25th season in coaching, Tom Palkowski enters his fifth season as the Tommies’ head coach and has a 64-30-11 record. He replaced Kevin Gorg, who coached UST its first nine varsity seasons. Palkowski, a former Tommie men’s hockey star, has 20 years experience as a hockey assistant coach. The Columbia Heights, Minn. native previously served 11 seasons in the boys’ programs at Columbia Heights, Totino-Grace and Mounds View high schools until becoming Gorg’s top assistant at UST.

Palkowski is assisted by Dave Larson, Maggie Fisher and Travis Dundore.

ABOUT ST. THOMAS: St. Thomas has emerged as a conference and national power in women’s ice hockey. The Toms are 159-64-18 over the last nine seasons (130-27-13 vs. conference foes), and have been regularly ranked in the top 10 nationally. Over the past 11 seasons, the Tommies have finished third or better in conference play each season.

This season, the Tommies began with a 1-0-2 overall record and 1-0-1 mark in the MIAC. St. Thomas started conference play with a win and a tie against Saint Benedict last weekend.

Senior forward Kaylee Keys leads the Tommies with five points on two goals and three assists. Sophomore forward Jenny Saxson has posted a team-high four goals in three games and sophomore forward/defender Christina Rozeske leads the team in assists - along with Keys - with three assists. Sophomore Alise Riedel has spent all three games in goal for the Tommies with six goals against (1.89 goals against average) and 59 saves (.908 save percentage).

LUCKY NO. 13: Senior goalie Danielle Justice has etched her name all over the Gustavus women’s hockey program record book throughout her four seasons wearing the black and gold. Among goalies with at least 500 minutes, the Alexandria, Minn. native holds the program record for most minutes in goal (3788:56), save percentage (.936) and wins (45). And with 13 more saves to her credit, Justice would become the first player in Gustavus women’s hockey history to tally 1,000 career saves. She currently sits at 987 saves.

SETTING THE TONE IN THE MIAC: We’re only two weeks into the season, but the Gusties’ impressive start has them atop the conference standings not only record-wise, but in many statistical categories as well. The Black and Gold lead the league in scoring offense by a wide margin (6.5 goals per game), scoring defense (1.5 goals allowed per game), combined special teams (62.9-percent), scoring by periods (26 total goals) and goals allowed by periods (six total goals allowed). They also rank second in the power play (38.9-percent) and special teams net (+5).

LAST SEASON: The Gusties and Tommies split the regular season series last year with each team winning at their home venue. St. Thomas won 1-0 in game one on a third period power play goal off the stick of Jamie Tiede. The game went through nearly 53 minutes of scoreless action before Maria Bothwell and Meghan Parker found Tiede for the game-winner. Gustavus enacted revenge the following day, claiming a 1-0 victory of its own. Game two was decided much earlier as Kirstin Peterson found Tam Meuwissen for the game-winner at the 16:07 mark in the first.

RACKING UP THE STATS: With an early undefeated 4-0-0 record by way of outscoring their opponents 26-to-6, many of the Gusties rank at the top of the conference in various statistical categories. Captain Mollie Carroll leads the MIAC in point scoring (2.5 points per game) with Allie Schwab (2.25 ppg) and Carolyn Draayer (2.0 ppg) coming in at second and third, respectively. Draayer leads the conference in goal scoring with six goals (1.5 goals per game). Schwab tops the league with 1.75 assists per game and Danielle Justice is arguably the best netminder in the MIAC with the lowest goals against average (1.00) and second best save percentage (.952) with a perfect 2-0-0 record.

POLL POSITION: Four games into the 2011-12 campaign and without a blemish on their record, the Gusties remain the No. 6 team in the nation according to the United States College Hockey Online (USCHO.com) poll.
