President’s Message November is here! We have much to be thankful for. We had two speakers for our October meeting. Heidi Ganahl spoke about her life. She is hoping to get Moms together to talk about their children’s issues in today’s world and how to best help our children through it. Please check out her website www.momsfightback.org. Whitley Crow from Conspire talked to us about “Marijuana in the Workplace”. Her power point was full of information about this topic and how it is affecting Colorado and other states who have voted marijuana in. The Bowl-a-thon on Saturday, October 29th is always a hit with costumes and raffle tickets for the scholarship fund. Please remember to get out and vote on November 8th. We are privileged to be able to vote as women and as citizens. Express your freedom and vote! We are doing a job walk of the new Springs Rescue Mission Shelter on November 10th at 3:45 p.m. It will be interesting to see how it has all come together. Nunn Construction, Inc. will be continuing to work on the Day Center as soon as the Shelter is finished. We are very excited to be able to help our community by building and remodeling the facility. Dr. Jason Cahill of Freedom Chiropractic will be speaking to us at our NAWIC general meeting on November 17th about “Healthy Eating During the Holidays”. This is always a good reminder with so many goodies around this time of year. Our holiday party is being hosted by Valerie Bates on December 8th. We will be having a potluck and “ugly” sock contest. We always look forward to that and the laughs or groans it brings. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

APC Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 15, 2016 was called to order at 9:00 a.m. “Unmask the Power of NAWIC” was our theme.

The General Session started with Presentation of Colors by Boy Scout Troop 555, followed by the National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance by Kym Roundtree. Inspiration was given by Melanie Healey. Introduction and Recognition by Liz Teramoto. Welcome to Fall Conference by Julie Barraza. Our first speaker was Cam Walker, Mayor Pro Tem Boulder City/LVVCA introduced by Kym Roundtree.

Cam Walker is Director of Business Development at Ledcor. He is fourth generation Nevadan and has strong ties to the community and 25 years of experience in the local construction and development industry.

He told us about 1905 when the railroad auctioned off parcels of Las Vegas. The City of Las Vegas had 42 million in tourists last year and six million in convention delegates. Southern Nevada is posed for another boom. Some of the projects coming up are The Shops at Summerlin, Union Village at Henderson, UNLV – medical school building, Raiders Stadium (possibly), Wynn Lagoon (over one billion and will have parasailing), Faraday Futures Tesla Car Building. He also talked about the Switch “SuperLoop” data building with level four security.

Keynote Speaker: Beth Campbell, Executive VP of Design at Westfield - “Construction through the Eyes of a Developer”. Westfield is a 50 year family owned business out of Sydney, Australia. Technology – Westfield will own their own software. She talked about:

Baseline

A Developer living in a Contractors World

Life Lessons 1)Create forming years – responsibility/respect 2)Drive – 5.3 billion in construction – overseeing. 6 billion next year design and construction. 3)Future – 2024 Olympics in Los Angeles (if they get awarded it) Touch client’s relationships. Emotional connection/brick & clicks/trust of relationships. Trends and Evolution/next generation/mixed use/little cities/hubs/residential/hotel/restaurants/ Evolving department stores. What is the experience for you as a shopper? Development, then design and construction, leasing, center management, tenant coordination. Airports – concession, food and beverage Design with estimators and subcontractors, so they help develop design up front. Construction early phases.

Westfield at the World Trade Center – check website. Curiosity – we all have a destiny to fulfill. Your attitude should be good every morning. Context – surround yourself with good friends and people who support and push you. Core Values – Trust, honesty, etc. Are people stepping on your core values? Clarity – Take time for yourself to think things through without emotion. Who are you as a person? Ticket – You have one ticket for this ride. Enjoy it! (From Real Estate Magazine Interview) HALT – Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired. If you are any of these, it affects your attitude. We ourselves can be roadblocks. Tina Quigley – General Manager – Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada. Tina was our last speaker. She knows what it means to think big. In a city of 2.1 million residents and 42 million annual visitors, Quigley is the forefront of visionary thinking and planning for the future. She recognizes that an enhanced multi-model and technologically advanced transportation infrastructure will help ensure that Southern Nevada can continue to attract tourists, residents and new business. Infrastructure – roads, traffic management, transportation planning and funding. 1940 - Pennsylvania Turnpike. 1956 –President Eisenhower – federal aid – Highway Act. It took President Eisenhower 65 days to travel from coast to coast. He wanted new roads to make the drive more efficient. Nevada will see 26% growth by 2025 in Southern Nevada. 42.3 million to 53.1 million. 26% of Southern Nevada is tourists. Check out “WAZE” app. (Karen Mitchell likes this one.) Intelligent Infrastructure – creating an environment for autonomous vehicles – one without driver. Connected vehicles with driver, with technology. Need paint markings with technology that lasts in heat. How can broadband not go off line and wreck cars, etc. Uber pools. Public transport – more time – than Uber and same price. Shared mobility, paratransit, handicapped transit. Opportunities – lead in policy and regulation – state and local level. Pilots and demonstrations. Auto maker or infrastructure? Provide consumer education and awareness. Took 15 years to approve airbags. CES (Consumer Electronic Seminar) – Summit/Demo. “The future is now!” The Regional Transportation of Southern Nevada still needs funding for streets and highways:

1) Portion of sales tax 2) Federal Funds 3) Motor Vehicle fuel tax

$.52/gallon – pre 2014, but costs increased. RTC can bond approximately $700-800 million to build 199 roadway transportation projects. 364 unfunded projects – 6.2 billion. If bond passes, would be $2-3 billion (half of what they need). $.25/a day costs to motorists on average. RTCNV.com Berni Mount Pikes Peak Chapter 356 President 2016-2017

Almost 100 years ago Olson Plumbing & Heating Co. opened as a one man plumbing shop.

Since that time Olson Plumbing & Heating Co. has worked on some of the most distinct landmarks in the Pikes Peak Region. Today, we are still family owned and guided by the same simple rules – do excellent work at a fair price, provide prompt service day or night, and stand behind every job.
