Woodburn Families, In March our Wolf Pride character trait is grit. Grit is about cultivating perseverance and passion towards learning. In recent years there has been a lot of talk about grit. Studies are showing that kids who demonstrate grit persist at hard tasks and show personal growth. Grit is a critical trait of most people who are suc-cessful in life. Grit is complex because it is related to other character traits such as optimism, purpose, growth mindset, and even self-control. There are some misconceptions about grit. Grit is more than telling kids to “try harder” or not give up. Grit is also about helping kids find their inspiration for learning. Having grit does not mean never quitting—it means being thoughtful about quitting (and not just because times get tough) and sticking to the things to which you are truly dedicated. Grit is a combination of passion and persis-tence. Demonstrating grit could involve:

• Finishing what you begin

• Staying committed to your goals

• Working hard even after experiencing failure or when you feel like quitting

• Sticking with a project or activity for more than a few weeks

We give credit to the Character Lab and the research of Angela Duckworth from the Uni-versity of Pennsylvania to help us learn more about Grit. https://characterlab.org/tools/grit What are some ways you might promote Grit at home?

Do you, or someone you know,

Your PAWS Art Program team is excited to bring you Project 4, Paper Sculptures. This one-hour lesson centers on shape, form and use of space, with a cameo by radial symmetry. To help things run smoothly, we are asking for at least 3 volun-teers in each classroom, including the lead. We are looking for even more volunteers this time around in the K-2 grades because of the amount of help the smaller ones will need with this project. If you would like to lead in a classroom,

you need to have either attended the initial training, or if you were unable to do that, you can attend a class you won't be leading to see how it's done. If you have the time, please consider signing up for mul-tiple sessions. Sometimes we have sessions right after the one you sign up for and need extra help, so keep an eye out for those as well.

Note: Project 3's clay pendants will be delivered in the Project 4 lesson. If you have any ques-tions or concerns, please contact the Woodburn Art Program at [email protected].

The health room is in need of elastic-waisted pants

for kinder-sized students.

If you have any that your children have outgrown,

we’d love to have them!

The weather outside in March can be cold and damp. Please keep the weather in mind when

preparing your child for school. Although we encourage our students to make good choices on

the playground, accidents do happen, and we are not always able to provide additional dry

clothing. Please consider sending extra clothing (socks and pants) with your child during the

wet winter months.

As a reminder, please keep sick children at home until they are 24 hours fever free without

the use of medications (with a fever of 100 or above), 24 hours symptom free of vomiting or

diarrhea. Please make sure and update the office with any new contact information, health

conditions, or concerns.

Adults must check in all medications to the health room, please do not send medications

(even over the counter medications such as cough drops or Tylenol) to school with your

child. All medications, including over the counter medication such as cough drops or Tylenol,

require a medication authorization form completed by your child’s health care provider to be

on file in the health room, and must have a prescription label attached to the medication.

Please contact Beth in our health room with any additional questions or concerns (360)833-

Sexual Harassment (CSD Policy & Procedure 3205) Students and staff are protected against sexual harassment by anyone in any school program or activity, including on the school campus, on the school bus, or off-campus during a school-sponsored activity. Sexual harassment is unwelcome behavior or communication that is sexual in nature when:

A student or employee is led to believe that he or she must submit to unwelcome sexual conduct or communications in order to gain something in return, such as a grade, a promotion, a place on a sports team, or any educational or employment decision, or

The conduct substantially interferes with a student's educational performance, or creates an intimidating or hostile educational or employment environment.

Examples of Sexual Harassment:

Pressuring a person for sexual favors Unwelcome touching of a sexual nature Writing graffiti of a sexual nature Distributing sexually explicit texts, e-mails, or pictures Making sexual jokes, rumors, or suggestive remarks Physical violence, including rape and sexual assault

You can report sexual harassment to any school staff member or to the district's Title IX Officer, Marilyn Boerke. You also have the right to file a complaint (see below). For a copy of our district’s sexual harassment policy and procedure, contact your school or district office, or view it online here: 3205 and 3205P. COMPLAINT OPTIONS: DISCRIMINATION AND SEXUAL HARASSMENT If you believe that you or your child has experienced unlawful discrimination, discriminatory harassment, or sexual harassment at school, you have the right to file a complaint. Before filing a complaint, you can discuss your concerns with your child’s principal or with the school district’s Section 504 Coordinator (Dana Lighty), Title IX Officer and Civil Rights Coordinator (Marilyn Boerke. This is often the fastest way to revolve your concerns. Complaint to the School District Step 1: Write Our Your Complaint In most cases, complaints must be filed within one year from the date of the incident or conduct that is the subject of the complaint. A complaint must be in writing. Be sure to describe the conduct or incident, explain why you believe discrimination, discriminatory harassment, or sexual harassment has taken place, and describe what actions you believe the district should take to resolve the problem. Send your written complaint—by mail, fax, email, or hand delivery—to the district superintendent or civil rights compliance coordinator. Step 2: School District Investigates Your Complaint Once the district receives your written complaint, the coordinator will give you a copy of the complaint procedure and make sure a prompt and thorough investigation takes place. The superintendent or designee will respond to you in writing within 30 calendar days—unless you agree on a different time period. If your complaint involves exceptional circumstances that demand a lengthier investigation, the district will notify you in writing to explain why staff members need a time extension and the new date for their written response.

Page 12: WOLF - Camas School Districtschools.camas.wednet.edu/woodburn/files/2013/07/... · If you only have a hard copy, we can scan your photo. Send the photo to school with your child in

Step 3: School District Responds to Your Complaint In its written response, the district will include a summary of the results of the investigation, a determination of whether or not the district failed to comply with civil rights laws, notification that you can appeal this determination, and any measures necessary to bring the district into compliance with civil rights laws. Corrective measures will be put into effect within 30 calendar days after this written response—unless you agree to a different time period. Appeal to the School District If you disagree with the school district’s decision, you may appeal to the school district’s board of directors. You must file a notice of appeal in writing to the secretary of the school board within 10 calendar days after you received the school district’s response to your complaint. The school board will schedule a hearing within 20 calendar days after they received your appeal, unless you agree on a different timeline. The school board will send you a written decision within 30 calendar days after the district received your notice of appeal. The school board’s decision will include information about how to file a complaint with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). Complaint to OSPI If you do not agree with the school district’s appeal decision, state law provides the option to file a formal complaint with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). This is a separate complaint process that can take place if one of these two conditions has occurred: (1) you have completed the district’s complaint and appeal process, or (2) the district has not followed the complaint and appeal process correctly. You have 20 calendar days to file a complaint to OSPI from the day you received the decision on your appeal. You can send your written complaint to the Equity and Civil Rights Office at OSPI:
