Preparedness for evacuation in case of a nuclear accident
Project background (1)
• Nuclear accident is low probability – high impact event• Municipalities Krško and Cernavoda both host nuclear power plants • Municipality Krško is at cross-road of vital infrastructure for the
SEE, i.e. Motorway A1, X. Pan-European railway corridor, electrical and gas lines;
• Long-Term Protective Action Planning Zone spreads over national border (at the moment still EU border and Schengen Area)
• Within the radius of 25 km around the NPP (Long-Term Protective Action Planning Zone) lives 240.000 people out of which 61,5% live in Croatia. The area reaches City of Zagreb, which as a capital of Croatia represents demographic, political and economic centre.
• The state emergency plan for nuclear accident foresees preventive evacuation in the precautionary action zone. Evacuation as precautionary measure in highly populated areas is rather rare; this project can improve such measure and serve as an example on European level.
