This is a timely production. The standard of inhalation anaesthesia in this country is of such a high standard that in routine operating lists local anmsthesia is often not considered. This is certainly the case in plastic surgery. The relevant anatomy is described and clearly illustrated by many diagrams. This is a very useful and practical book for all members of a plastic anti maxillofacial unit. A. B. W. Fortsehritte der Kiefer- und Gesichts- Chirurgie. By Prof. Dr Dr KARL SCHUCHARDT und Prof. Dr Dr MARTIN WASSMUND. Pp. 259 , with 372 illustrations. (Stuttgart : Georg Thieme Verlag. 1955.) This is the first volume of a year book presenting in collective form the recent advances in surgery of the mouth and face. The book is essentially in two parts. The first of these deals with the problems pertaining to cleft lip and palate. The indications for surgery, the operative planning, and the operative techniques employed by acknowledged authorities are presented. The second part of the book is devoted to the detailed consideration of methods of correction of the more gross facial deformities such as micrognathia, mandibular prognathism, and unilateral asymmetry of varying gtiology. Much of the work was read at the Congress of the German Society for the Study of Surgery of the Mouth and Face, held at Bonn in 1954. The contributors include Professors Schuchardt and Wassmund, who have in addition been responsible for editing this excellent collection of articles. The book is freely illustrated with photographs and line drawings. The publishers are to be congratulated on the standard of production which is msintained throughout the work. If only the difficulty of language could be surmounted: this would undoubtedly prove to be an invaluable addition to the library of all who are interested in cleft lip, cleft palate, and in the correction of facial anomalies in general.
