THE WEEK AHEAD X The Wisconsin men’s track and field team makes

its annual trip to Des Moines, Iowa, this week for the 101st running of the Drake Relays.

X The Badgers also will send several athletes to compete in an alternative meet at UW-Whitewater on Saturday, April 24.

LOOKING BACK X The Badgers head to Drake as defending champi-

ons in both the 4x800-meter relay and the 4x110-meter shuttle hurdle relay after winning both events in 2009.

X Wisconsin’s victory in the 4x800 relay marked the Badgers’ first Drake title in a relay since 1971, and the time of 7:21.10 laid down by Craig Miller, Jack Bolas, Steve Ludwig and Zach Beth ranked as UW’s fastest in the event since 1976.

X The Badgers return three of the four athletes from that relay: Beth, Bolas and Miller.

X Wisconsin also claimed its first-ever shuttle hurdle relay title with four athletes who return this season in Adam Hexum, Temi Ogunbodede, Nate Larkin and Seth Pelock.

X This season, Larkin, Hexum and Ogunbodede have already combined with sophomore Adum Gross to set a school record in the event with their 57.99-second performance at the Florida Relays on April 3.

X Wisconsin owns 17 Drake titles in relay events and 51 overall, the eighth-most all-time by a University Division program.

OUT OF THE BLOCKS X The Badgers took part in five separate meets over the course of a busy week of com-

petition last week, including four on the West Coast.

X Personal-best scores from David Grzesiak (7,163 points), Derek Steinbach (6,940) and Ian Jansen (6,627) highlighted the California Invitational Decathlon.

X At the 52nd Mt. SAC Relays, the distance quartet of Maverick Darling (13:49.95), Craig Miller (13:50.40), Landon Peacock (13:54.73) and Ryan Gasper (13:55.18) each set personal-best times in the Olympic Development section of the 5,000 meters. Darling led the charge with a sixth-place finish.

X The Badgers also had runner-up finishes from Larkin (110-meter hurdles; 14.25), Collin Taylor (high jump; 6-10 3/4) and the 4x100-meter relay team of Larkin, James Groce, Chas DeMers and Gavin Robertson (41.12) on Friday at Mt. SAC.

X The same quartet won the 4x100 relay at the Beach Invitational on Saturday, clocking in at 41.19, while Larkin ran 14.06 to finish third in the 110 hurdles.

Junior Zach Beth anchored the Badgers to victory in the 4x800-meter relay at last year’s Drake Relays to earn Wisconsin its first-ever Drake win in the event.

HEAD COACH ED NUTTYCOMBEX Over the last 15 years, the University of Wisconsin has dominated the Big Ten Conference in men’s track and field. The key to the Badgers’ success has been Ed Nuttycombe, who is in his 27th season as the head men’s track and field coach at the UW.

Big Ten ChampionshipsUnder Nuttycombe’s direction, the Badgers have won 11 of the last 14 league titles during the indoor season and 10 of the last 15 titles in outdoor track. Nuttycombe became the win-ning men’s track coach in Big Ten history in 2007 when his won his 23rd title.

In nine of the last 14 years, Wisconsin has won the Big Ten “Triple Crown,” consisting of conference titles in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track during the same academic year. The Badgers also won the “Triple Crown” in 1985-86, bringing their total to 10.

Individually, Nuttycombe has coached 160 Big Ten champions, including nine-time cham-pions Reggie Torian and Len Herring. Most recently, Nuttycombe coached Rayme Mackinson to the league’s 2009 indoor long jump title, while Ryan Gasper (3,000-meter steeplechase) and Craig Miller (1,500 meters) both won titles at the outdoor Big Ten meet in 2009.

Nuttycombe’s athletes have been honored nine times as the Big Ten Indoor or Outdoor Athlete of the Year.

NCAA SuccessWisconsin became the first Big Ten school to win a national title when it was crowned champion at the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championships. It was also the first national title for a UW track program. Wisconsin crowned one national champion and picked up 10 All-America honors. Outdoors, the Badgers tied for seventh at the NCAA championships as senior Chris Solinsky won his second consecutive title at 5,000 meters. Four UW athletes earned All-America honors.

Under Nuttycombe, the Badgers have scored in 22 of 26 NCAA outdoor meets including 10 top-20 finishes. Indoors, Wisconsin has scored in 19 NCAA meets, including the last 16 in a row. The Badgers have eight top-20 indoor finishes.

Nuttycombe has 10 individual national champions to his credit, including three in 1997 alone. That year, Torian won the 110-meter high hurdles, Pascal Dobert won the 3000-meter steeplechase and James Dunkleberger won the decathlon.

Solinsky set the UW men’s athletic record in 2007 with five NCAA titles in his career.

A total of 169 track All-Americans have passed through Wisconsin during Nuttycombe’s ten-ure in the last 26 years. The list of honorees includes Solinsky, who has a UW record 11 All-America honors to his credit. Other notable athletes include Matt Tegenkamp, a seven-time All-American, and Jason Casiano, James Menon and Len Herring, all six-time recipients.

Nuttycombe’s honorees also include Olympians Tegenkamp, Dobert and Maxwell Seales.

Coach of the Year HonorsWhile his teams have produced year after year on the track, observers and peers of the track world have lauded Nuttycombe’s efforts with 30 coach of the year honors, including the 2007 indoor national coach of the year.

He swept the Big Ten Indoor and Outdoor Coach of the Year honors eight times, including four years in a row from 2004-2007. Nuttycombe has been named the Big Ten Coach of the Year 20 times. He has also been honored with regional coach of the year accolades by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association eight times.

Nuttycombe is a hands-on coach, leading the UW sprint hurdlers, jumpers and multi-event athletes. He coached Demi Omole to four consecutive titles in the Big Ten outdoor 100 meters and two titles in the indoor 60 meters. Omole wrapped up his career as a 11-time Big Ten champion and a six-time All-American.

Wisconsin won the Big Ten title in the 400-meter relay in four consecutive seasons from 2004-2007, and Nuttycombe has coached 11 indoor and outdoor Big Ten high hurdle cham-pions in the last 14 years.

Academic HonorsNuttycombe has produced not only athletically talented squads, but academically gifted ones as well. Badger athletes have been named Academic All-America 15 times, including Nathan Brown, Joe Detmer and Tim Nelson in 2007. Brown and Detmer were also honored in 2005 and 2006.

Since the inception of the Academic All–Big Ten team in 1986, Wisconsin track athletes have been awarded this academic honor 234 times. The Badgers placed at least 10 student-athletes on the Academic All–Big Ten teams each of the last 14 years.

Former AthleteA 1977 graduate in physical education from Virginia Tech, Nuttycombe was a four-year letterwinner in track for the Hokies. While at Tech, the Richmond, Va., native won six Virginia collegiate pole vault titles, with a career best of 16-3. He was also a five-time Virginia AAU decathlon champion, with a personal-best of more than 7,100 points.

Before coming to Wisconsin as an assistant coach in 1980, Nuttycombe served as an assistant track coach at Northern Illinois while earning his master’s degree in exercise physiology.

Ed and his wife, Diane, reside in Madison and have two children, Kent and Carolyn (Mrs. David U’ren), and three grandchildren, Charlie U’ren, XXX U’ren and Falcon Nuttycombe.
