2016-17 GEORGIA TECH BASKETBALL GAME NOTES@GTMBB • @GTJOSHPASTNER
Tech and Georgia Meet for 193rd Time Georgia Tech continues a stretch of three home games
in fi ve days Tuesday night with a 7 p.m., nationally-televised
contest against state rival Georgia at McCamish Pavilion.
Tech (6-3), in its fi rst season under head coach Josh
Pastner, is playing its second straight home game since a nine-
day hiatus for exams, having defeated Alcorn State, 74-50, on
Sunday. The Yellow Jackets, 5-1 at home this season, have won
their last two games, including a 73-70 overtime decision at
VCU on Dec. 7.
Georgia (7-3) has won two in a row since its exam
break, taking down Louisiana Lafayette (73-60) and Charleston
Southern (84-64) at home in the past week. The Bulldogs have
played only one true road game, a 74-64 loss at Clemson in
their season opener.
Tuesday’s game will be televised nationally on ESPNU,
the Yellow Jackets’ third appearance this season on that
network, and the broadcast is also available online through the
WatchESPN app. Radio coverage is provided by Tech’s fl agship
station, 680 the Fan (680 AM/93.7 FM).
Starting Five • Tuesday night’s game is the second of fi ve straight home games coming up for the Yellow Jackets, who host Wofford Thursday
before breaking for Christmas, then entertain North Carolina A&T (Dec. 28) and begin ACC play against North Carolina (Dec. 31).
• Tuesday’s game is the second for Tech this season against an opponent from the Southeastern Conference. The Yellow Jackets
lost at Tennessee on Dec. 3.
• Center Ben Lammers leads the ACC in rebound average (11.0 rpg), offensive rebounds (4.67 pg) and blocked shots (4.22

pct.) and 18th in scoring average (15.3 ppg).
• Georgia Tech has hit 61.8 percent of its free throws in
its wins, 76.1 percent in its losses. However, the Jackets have
outscored their opponents 17.5-10.5 points per game from the
line in their six wins, and has been outscored 12.3-11.7 per
game in three losses.
• Former Tech guard Jon Barry is the color analyst for
Tuesday night’s game on ESPNU, working with Atlanta resident
Tom Hart. Barry played at Tech from 1990-92 and made the All-
ACC team in 1992. A fi rst-round draft pick by Boston in 1992,
Barry is an NBA analyst for ESPN.
Series Notes • Before last season’s 75-61 loss in Athens, Georgia
Tech had won four consecutive games over Georgia for the fi rst
time since winning 10 in a row over the Bulldogs, the longest for
either team in the series, from December of 1958 to February of
1961.
• Tech snapped a 13-game losing streak in games
played at Stegeman Coliseum with a 68-56 win over Georgia
on Dec. 7, 2011. It was Tech’s fi rst win in Athens since Nov.
26, 1976, a stretch that spanned three Tech coaches - Dwane
Morrison (0-for-his-last-4), Bobby Cremins (0-4) and Paul
Hewitt (0-5).
• With Tech’s 80-71 win in the Nov. 15, 2013 contest in
Athens, the Yellow Jackets won back-to-back in Athens for the
fi rst time since winning three in a row from 1959-61.
• Brian Gregory was the fi rst Tech coach to win his fi rst
four meetings against Georgia since Roy McArthur, who won his
fi rst four during the 1946-47 and 1947-48 seasons.
• Georgia Tech leads the overall series 105-87 and
has played the Bulldogs more than any other opponent in its
basketball history.
• The series has been played alternately on the respective
schools’ campuses since the 1995-96 season. Georgia holds
an 11-10 lead over that period,
• In the 21 on-campus meetings since 1995, each team
has won twice on the other’s home court. Tech won two straight
meetings in Athens in 2011 and 2013 to put the series back “on
serve,” while Georgia has won twice in Atlanta, both at Alexander
Memorial Coliseum in 2000 and 2010.
• Before that December, 1995 meeting in Athens, the
teams played 14 straight years at the Omni in downtown Atlanta,
which was located on the site of the current Philips Arena. Tech
went 8-6 against the Bulldogs in the facility, including eight of the
last 10 before the neutral series ended. The teams have played
on neutral sites other than the SEC or Southern Intercollegiate
Championships only one other time, that coming at the 1960
Gator Bowl Tournament in Jacksonville, Fla.
• Tech is 4-3 against Georgia teams coached by Mark
Fox, who won his fi rst two encounters against the Jackets.
• Tech and Georgia were both charter members of the
Southeastern Conference, and the Yellow Jackets went 55-29
against the Bulldogs in the SEC before leaving the conference
after the 1963-64 season.
• Tech is 35-31 against Georgia since leaving the SEC.
Last Year’s Meeting in Athens J.J. Frazier scored a season-high 35 points while sinking
six 3s, and Georgia beat Georgia Tech 75-61 at Stegeman
Coliseum to end a streak of four straight losses in the state
rivalry.
The undersized (5-10, 155) junior guard made six of
nine 3s. Frazier iced Georgia’s lead by making each of his eight
free throws in the fi nal 90 seconds. Yante Maten added 17
points for Georgia (5-3).
The loss to Georgia was the fi rst for the Yellow Jackets
(7-3) in fi ve seasons under head coach Brian Gregory.
Tadric Jackson had 14 points for Georgia Tech, which led
34-33 at halftime but fell behind when Frazier hit a 3-pointer as
part of the Bulldogs’ 9-0 run to open the second half.

The 9-0 run gave Georgia a 42-34 lead. Adam Smith,
who had 11 points, ended the run with his fi rst of three straight
3-pointers to keep the Yellow Jackets close. Houston Kessler’s
basket with 13:50 remaining pushed Georgia’s lead to double
fi gures for the fi rst time at 53-43.
Maten and Frazier combined for 24 of Georgia’s 33 fi rst-
half points. No other Georgia player had more than three points
in the half.
Georgia’s big lead was 12 points at 64-52 on Maten’s
jumper with four minutes remaining. The Bulldogs didn’t make
another fi eld goal but iced the game on free throws.
Last Game - Jackets Down Alcorn State Center Ben Lammers had 12 points and 13 rebounds for
his sixth double-double of the season and Georgia Tech routed
Alcorn State 74-50 Sunday at McCamish Pavilion.
The 6-foot-10 junior was 5-for-7 from the fi eld and had
six offensive rebounds and one blocked shot for the Yellow
Jackets, who won their second-straight game. Lammers played
only 20 minutes and didn’t return to the court for the fi nal 6:39.
Georgia Tech (6-3) had three others in double fi gures:
Josh Okogie with 14 points and three steals, Tadric Jackson
with 14 points, and Quinton Stephens with 11 points and eight
rebounds.
Alcorn State was able to hang around for the early part
of the fi rst half because of its 3-point success (6-of-7 in the fi rst
half). The Braves were within 18-12 when Denzel Dulin made a
3-pointer with 11:28 left in the fi rst half.
But Georgia Tech responded with a 12-2 run that
included back-to-back dunks from Jackson and Lammers, as
well as a three-point play from Okogie. The run gave the Yellow
Jackets a 30-14 lead with 6:00 left in the half.
Pastner on Tech’s Win over Alcorn State “We missed a lot of layups, a lot of short layups. We’ve
got these three games in fi ve days but once we get back from
Christmas break and the young men aren’t in school, we’ll be
able to have a little bit more time of individual attention and
individual skill work to really work on some things especially like
making layups. We work all the time on things like attacking,
attacking, attacking and we’re getting to the rim, we’re just
missing some short shots that we’ve got to be able to put in.
We’re not a team that’s going to shoot a lot of threes, we’re
going to be in attack mode. We had some good looks from
three, we just missed some open ones. But a good win, always
good to get a W.”
Noteworthy... • Georgia Tech has started the lineup of Lammers,
Stephens, Moore, Heyward and Okogie in fi ve of nine games
this season. Three Yellow Jackets – Ben Lammers, Josh Okogie
and Quinton Stephens – have started every game this season.
• Tech’s 24-point margin of victory over Alcorn State
was its highest of the season, surpassing the 15-point wins the
Yellow Jackets scored against Tennessee Tech and Southern in
the season’s fi rst two games.
• The 50 points Tech allowed to Alcorn State were a
season low, surpassing the 55 surrendered to the Tennessee
Tech in the season opener.
• Tech led at the half (39-22) for the seventh time in nine
games, and are 6-1 this season when leading at the half.
• Tech didn’t sink its fi rst three-point basket against
Alcorn State until Tadric Jackson drained one with fi ve seconds
left in the fi rst half. The Yellow Jackets connected on 2-for-11
shots from three-point range in the game and are 29-for-72
(40.3 percent) from long distance in their last fi ve games, 36.4
percent for the season.
• Tech used all 14 available players players against
Alcorn State, the fi rst time that has happened this season. Nine
played double-digits in minutes, including three off the bench.

TECH NOTEBOOKIf guys aren’t diving on the fl oor then we blow the whistle and
the whole team is running. That is very important to me, winning
50/50 balls. We were 15-3 advantage Georgia Tech in the fi rst
half on 50/50 balls. First side offense we were 20 percent. I was
telling the guys that our pace has to still be better, our pace and
speed, but our fi rst side shooting we were 20 percent, second
side 62 percent, third side 57 percent. We were at our best
when the ball was being moved second and third side with great
pace and speed. But that lead we had in the fi rst half was strictly
based on 50/50 balls, and we won that battle, and that’s a key
emphasis that we talk about all the time.”
Tech’s Block Party Ben Lammers, with an NCAA-best 38 blocked shots in
nine games, has not been alone in his ability to defend the rim for
Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets have swatted away 68 shots, a
7.5 average which leads the ACC and is No. 2 in the nation.
Quinton Stephens has blocked 11 shots, freshman Josh
Okogie has six, and four other players have at least two.
Tech blocked a program-record 16 shots against
Southern, eight each against Tennessee Tech and Sam Houston
State and nine against Ohio. It may signal a trend for the Yellow
Jackets. Only one of Josh Pastner’s Memphis teams ranked
lower than 21st nationally in blocked shots in seven years, and
two of them ranked fourth (6.4 per game each).
The Laminator is Everywhere Ben Lammers has come a long way from being a
dependable reserve post player for Georgia Tech, his role last
season as a sophomore.
After playing all 36 games last season in relief of seniors
Charles Mitchell and Nick Jacobs, the 6-10 junior center
has fl ourished in the Yellow Jackets’ four-out, one-in system,
stringing together six double-doubles and nine straight double-
digit scoring efforts to start the season.
Lammers is currently the top shot-blocker in the
nation, averaging 4.22 per game. He also is the ACC’s
leading rebounder (11.0 per game) and is 18th in the ACC in
scoring average (15.3 points per game) and third in fi eld goal
percentage (60 pct.).
The player who averaged less than 15 minutes per game
last year has averaged 33.7 through Tech’s fi rst nine games,
including 42 of a possible 45 minutes at VCU, and 38 and 37
minutes against Ohio and Sam Houston State, respectively. He
ranks eighth in the ACC in that category.
Pastner on Lammers - “When I fi rst saw Ben in April,
and I’ve told this to Ben too, when I fi rst got the job and our
fi rst workout, I was like man he’s got some talent, but he has
got a long way to go. To his credit the guy has been absolutely
coachable, he’s done what we’ve said, he plays hard, he’s just
a fi ne, fi ne student-athlete and represents Georgia Tech. He’s
gotten better and better and better. He’s gotten more confi dent
and I think he just hasn’t even really fi lled his whole potential.
I’m proud of him, he’s got nine games and six double-doubles
already, never had one coming into this year.”
Action Jackson When Tadric Jackson is healthy and playing well, he
makes a difference for the Georgia Tech with his ability to
penetrate, handle the ball and score in traffi c. The Josh Pastner
system seems to suit his skill set.
After missing the Tennessee Tech game with a hamstring
injury, Jackson came off the bench to score 15 points or more
in each of Georgia Tech’s next three games. He ended a three-
game slump by scoring a career-high 24 points in Tech’s 73-70
overtime win at VCU on Dec. 7, then followed with a team-high
14 against Alcorn State.
The junior from Tifton, Ga., has connected on 48.7
percent of his shots from the fl oor, and nine of 16 from three-
point range.
Jackson can be a game-changer. Responding to a
challenge from head coach Josh Pastner after a lackluster 10
minutes at Tennessee, the 6-2 junior scored 16 of his 24 points
in the second half and buried a big three-pointer in overtime
against VCU. He fi nished 9-of-18 from the fl oor, hit a pair of
threes and did not turn the ball over in 31 minutes.
He made a big splash in the fi nal 10 minutes of the fi rst
half in Tech’s game against Southern, scoring 13 of his career-
high 20 points to fuel a run that took Tech from an 18-16 lead
to 41-25 at the half. He fi nished 8-of-11 from the fl oor and
grabbed fi ve rebounds in 21 minutes.
Jackson did similar work at the end of the Yellow Jackets’
overtime exhibition win against Shorter. Of his 27 points in that
game, he scored nine in the closing six minutes of regulation,
including the game-tying free throws with 12 seconds left, as
Tech came from nine points down, then scored seven of the
Jackets’ fi rst nine points in overtime.
Pastner on Jackson - “I’ve been hard on him, but I’ve
been hard on him knowing his upside and his potential. I’ve
pushed him hard, and I’ve held him accountable, but Tadric is a
fi ne, young man and he’s got a chance to be a really good player.
He just has to stay aggressive, he’s got to stay in attack mentality.
His offense has to come through his defense and rebounding.
That’s where you get your energy. He’s got to continue to take
great pride in that.”
Higher Q Quinton Stephens has spent three years working to
become a more consistent outside shooter, but as a senior in
Georgia Tech’s new system under head coach Josh Pastner, the
6-9 forward has expanded his game and found other ways to
help the Yellow Jackets.
Stephens, playing a stretch-4 position rather than his wing
forward of the past, fi lls up most every column on the stat sheet
in a nightly basis. He has more than doubled his career scoring
(11.7 ppg) and rebounding averages (7.7), scoring in double
fi gures eight times in nine games and posting double-doubles
three times.
He is also second on the team in assists (2.6 per game)
and, in keeping with Pastner’s attack-on-offense mandate, has
gotten to the free throw line more frequently. He is 25-of-39
from the foul line in nine games, already surpassing his career-
best totals from last year (22-of-30).
Sunday’s game against Alcorn State was typical - 11
points eight rebounds, three assists, one block, three steals in
24 minutes. That was without a three-point fi eld goal.
Pastner on Stephens - “Quinton has totally changed his
game. You see Quinton on the glass, the way he’s fl ying all over
the place. He’s doing things he has never done. He has totally
changed his game for the better.”
Josh 2.0 Freshman Josh Okogie has averaged 15.1 points
through his fi rst nine collegiate games, rivaling the starts of some
of the best freshmen in Georgia Tech history.
Okogie ranks 19th in the ACC in scoring average, and
was honored as the ACC’s Rookie of the Week on Nov. 28 after
pouring in a Tech freshman record 38 points against Tulane on
Nov. 26. His 136 points through nine games are the most for a
Yellow Jacket freshman since Tony Akins piled up 152 through
his fi rst eight games in 1998-99.
Okogie scored 18 each against Tennessee Tech and
Southern, and 16 vs. Sam Houston State. He is shooting better
than 55 percent in Tech’s victories.
He’s gotten to the free throw line a team-high 58 times
(72.4 percent), mostly due to his ability to attack the basket
and run the fl oor in transition. At his current rate, Okogie will
attempt 206 free throws in the regular season, challenging the
Tech record of 205 set last season by Marcus Georges-Hunt.
The Snellville, Ga., freshman has proven to be Tech’s best
rebounding guard, grabbing 3.8 per game to rank fourth on
the team, and took 11 against Ohio. He also has 14 assists, six

2016-17 GEORGIA TECH BASKETBALL GAME NOTES@GTMBB • @GTJOSHPASTNER
New Era Beginning for Tech Basketball Georgia Tech begins its 102nd season of basketball in
2016-17 under new head coach Josh Pastner, the 14th head
coach in program history.
Pastner, 39, compiled a 167-73 record over seven
seasons as the head coach at Memphis, where the Tigers
earned bids to the NCAA Tournament four times. He is tied for
the 10th most wins for a head coach in his fi rst seven seasons in
Division I basketball history, and is the second winningest active
coach under the age of 40 in NCAA Division I.
Despite his young age, Pastner has been involved in
basketball at the Division I level for 20 years, as a player and
an assistant coach at Arizona, and as an assistant coach and the
head coach at Memphis. He has been a part of teams that have
won 490 games, played in 17 NCAA Tournaments and 18 total
post-season events. Teams he has been involved with have won
12 conference tournament or regular-season championships,
advanced to seven Sweet Sixteens, fi ve Elite Eights, two Final
Fours and two NCAA championship games.
Jackets At-A-Glance The Yellow Jackets return seven letterwinners from a
team that won 21 games and advanced to the third round of
the National Invitation Tournament last spring, including senior
forward Quinton Stephens (6-9, Atlanta, Ga.), senior guards
Josh Heath (6-2, Tampa, Fla.) and Corey Heyward (6-1, Duluth,
Ga.) and junior guard Tadric Jackson (6-2, Tifton, Ga.), who
have started 76 games between them in their careers, and junior
center Ben Lammers (6-10, San Antonio, Texas).
Tech lost its top four players in scoring, starts and minutes
played from a year ago, including Marcus Georges-Hunt, now in
the NBA D-League after averaging 16.7 points per game last
year, and Adam Smith, a 41-percent three-point shooter now
playing in Europe.
But Pastner’s fi rst Tech team has some veteran presence.
Stephens, who started the last 11 games of the 2015-16
season, had 26 career starts in the last three years and had
missed only one game in his career. Heath started 21 games last
season and had 29 starts overall in his career. Heyward started
15 games as a freshman and has 18 career starts. Jackson had
seven career starts and missed only one game in two seasons.
Graduate transfers Kellen McCormick (Western Michigan) and
Jodan Price (Eastern Michigan) had 12 starts and 166 games
played between them.
Stephens was Tech’s top returning scorer at 5.0 points
per game, while Jackson was sixth on the scoring chart at 4.7
points per game.
Tech does not have the size it enjoyed with post-players
Charles Mitchell and Nick Jacobs last year, and none of Tech’s
returning frontcourt players had started a game in college. But
Lammers played in all 36 games last season, averaging 14.5
minutes per game and leading the team in blocked shots (47).
That group includes 6-9 sophomore Abdoulaye Gueye (Dakar,
Senegal) and 6-10 freshman Sylvester Ogbonda (Port Harcourt,
Nigeria), both of whom redshirted last season.
Tech Adds Solid Freshman Class Tech’s freshman class includes a trio of three-star
perimeter players in 6-5 Christian Matthews from Clinton, Md.,
6-4 Justin Moore from San Diego, Calif., and 6-4 Josh Okogie
from Snellville, Ga. Matthews, a high-scoring wing from National
Christian Academy, and Okogie, a fi rst-team all-state choice from
Shiloh High School, signed in the early period last November,
while Moore, an all-state point guard in California, came on
board in June after initially signing with Tulane.
Two Grad Transfers Complete Roster Kellen McCormick, a sharp-shooting forward from
Western Michigan, and Jodan Price, a solid wing from Eastern
Michigan, enrolled at Georgia Tech during the summer term to
give the Yellow Jackets additional veteran presence on the roster.

Okogie Goes for 38 vs. Tulane Josh Okogie set a Georgia Tech freshman record for
points in a game with his 38 on Nov. 26 against Tulane. He hit
12 of 20 shots from the fl oor and 13 of 18 from the free throw
line (more than Tulane’s entire team, 12-of-17). It is the most
points scored by an ACC player in a game this season.
• He eclipsed the previous Tech freshman mark of
33 by Mark Price against Virginia on March 12, 1983 (ACC
Tournament) and Dion Glover against Seton Hall on March 11,
1998 (NIT).
• It was the fourth-most points scored by a freshman
in ACC history and the most since the 2013 ACC Tournament,
when Boston College’s Olivier Hanlan scored 41 (the ACC
freshman record) against Georgia Tech. There have been two
other 40-point games by freshmen in ACC history - Harrison
Barnes of North Carolina in 2011 and Tyler Hansbrough of North
Carolina in 2006.
• Okogie’s 38 points were the most by any Tech player
since Kenny Anderson scored 42 vs. Howard on Jan. 2, 1991,
and tied for the seventh-highest single-game scoring total in
program history.
• Okogie became the fi fth different Tech freshman to
score 30 points in a game (Kenny Anderson did it four times,
Mark Price did it twice, Dion Glover and Thaddeus Young did it
once each).
• Okogie scored 14 straight points for Tech bridging
intermission, including the last six points of the fi rst half and the
fi rst eight of the second half. His spree helped Tech extend its
lead from 31-30 to 45-32.
Pastner on Okogie’s 38-point night - “He didn’t take
plays off. Beforehand, he was having the tendency to take plays
off. Now I say that, you look at his numbers as a freshman has
been pretty darn good. He’s just going to continue to get better.
The reason he scored offensively was because he was at his
best defensively as he’s been all year long. It translated to him
being really locked in offensively. When he is not locked in
defensively, he is not as effective offensively. Tonight he was his
best defensively and it triggered and translated into him being
great offensively.”
Extended Mileage Research at ESPN confi rms that Georgia Tech is the least
experienced team in the nation. You don’t need to look much
further for evidence of that than the Yellow Jackets’ minutes-
played column on the stat sheet.
Playing time for these fi ve returning letterwinners has
drastically escalated to fi ll the void created by the loss of fi ve
seniors from last year’s team.

McCormick, the son of former Michigan center and current
ESPN basketball analyst Tim McCormick, made 42 percent of
his three-point tries over three seasons at Western Michigan.
Price, from Indianapolis, Ind., initially enrolled at DePaul and
played two years at Eastern Michigan (28 percent on his threes)
before landing at Tech.
Transition Points • According to ESPN.com’s John Gasaway, Tech is the
least experienced team in Division I, returning only 25 percent
of its possession-minutes from 2015-16. Gasaway measures
experience by calculating a team’s “returning possession
minutes,” the percentage of minutes that a player recorded last
season, multiplied by the percentage of the team’s possessions
that he used (as listed at kenpom.com).
• Georgia Tech is playing a program-record 31 regular-
season games this season, assisted by participating in an exempt
four-game, multi-team event to begin the season. Tech also fi lled
its bye spot in the ACC schedule on Feb. 7 with Tusculum.
• Georgia Tech lost 78 percent of its scoring and 67
percent of its minutes from last year’s team, which went 21-
15 and reached the quarterfi nals of the National Invitation
Tournament.
• Georgia Tech’s roster includes 12 scholarship players
and three walk-ons. Of the 12 scholarship players, fi ve are
seniors.
• Only one member of Tech’s starting lineup that was
used over the fi nal 11 games of the 2015-16 season is back,
but Pastner has two returning players who made more than 10
starts last season - Quinton Stephens (14) and Josh Heath (11).
• Career collegiate starts by current players before
this season - Corey Heyward (18), Tadric Jackson (7), Kellen
McCormick (2), Jodan Price (10), Quinton Stephens (26).
• Sophomore forward Abdoulaye Gueye and freshman
center Sylvester Ogbonda sat out the season as redshirts.
• Tech’s top four scorers from a year ago, all seniors,
accounted for 71.4 percent of the Yellow Jackets’ points, 68.7
percent of the shots taken and 55.2 percent of the minutes.
Pastner’s Winning Staff • Head coach Josh Pastner and all three assistant
coaches played major conference Division I basketball - Eric
Reveno at Stanford (1985-89), Tavaras Hardy at Northwestern
(1998-2002), Darryl LaBarrie at Georgia Tech and Pastner at
Arizona (1993-97).
• Tech’s coaching staff has participated in 32 NCAA
Tournaments collectively - Reveno has been involved in eight
NCAA Tournaments as a coach and one as a player; Hardy in
three as a coach; LaBarrie in two as a coach and one as a
player; and Pastner in 13 as a coach and four as a player.
• Pastner hired two former Georgia Tech players to his
staff - assistant coach LaBarrie, who played three years under
Bobby Cremins and Paul Hewitt (1998-2001) and was an
assistant coach for two years under Hewitt (2009-11), and
director of player personnel Mario West, a non-scholarship
player under Hewitt (2003-07) who played two seasons in the
NBA.
• Only two members of Pastner’s staff at Memphis,
director of operations Julian Swartz and video coordinator
Tyler Benson, followed him to Georgia Tech. All three assistant
coaches are new to Pastner’s staff.
Pastner Said It “I just still feel that we could be a lot faster with our pace
and our cuts. It’s going to take just time and fi lm and work. I don’t
want to call a play every time down. I don’t want to, I don’t like
doing that. I want our guys to be able to play with freedom within
structure and be able to be a basketball player and make plays.
With that comes a lot of responsibility, they’ve got to understand
how to play the right way, how to play with freedom, how to
play in attack mode and how to play with pace. Part of this year
is going to be ups and downs and growing pains to be able to
understand that is what we’ve got to do.” - following Tech’s season-opening win over Tennessee Tech
Jackets Sign NY Guard Alvarado Successfully recruiting the New York area for the fi rst time
since the late 1990s, Georgia Tech signed Brooklyn, N.Y., point
guard Jose Alvarado during the November signing period.
The reigning New York City Catholic League player of the
year, the 6-foot point guard led Christ the King High School in
Middle Village, N.Y., the No. 19 team in the nation entering the
2016-17 season, to the New York City title twice and his AAU
team, the New York Rens, to the Peach Jam quarterfi nals last
summer. He follows a pair of legendary New York point guards
into the Tech program – Kenny Anderson (1989-91) and
Stephon Marbury (1995-96).
Alvarado, a three-star prospect described as a tough,
gritty, pass-fi rst point guard, is ranked the No. 9 player in the
state of New York and No. 33 in the nation at his position by
ESPN. He averaged 17 points and 6.5 assists per game as
a junior for Christ the King, which fell in the Catholic League
semifi nals last season, and 11 points and fi ve assists in his fi rst
season with the Rens.
Tech to Open 2017-18 Season in China Georgia Tech has been invited to play UCLA in the 2017
Pac-12 China Game presented by the Alibaba Group, the Pac-
12 Conference announced Friday. Longtime Pac-12 partner
Federation of University Sports of China (FUSC), which operates
under China’s Ministry of Education, will serve as the co-host for
the game.
The announcement came in the lead-up to the 2016
Pac-12 China Game, in which Stanford will take on Harvard this
Saturday at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai. That game
will be televised live in the United States on ESPN2 at 8 p.m. PT/
11 p.m. ET on Friday.
The 2017 Pac-12 China Game between UCLA and
Georgia Tech will tip off the 2017-18 basketball season with
specifi c U.S. and China broadcast information to be fi nalized at a
later date. The game is part of Pac-12 Global, an unprecedented
effort to promote goodwill for the Conference and its member
institutions through sport, and to provide student-athletes with a
transformative cultural exchange experience.
The UCLA game in China will be the second time in
program history that Georgia Tech will travel to East Asia for
a regular-season men’s basketball game. The Yellow Jackets

Tech played 55 seasons in Alexander Memorial Coliseum,
compiling a record of 556-194 (.741). Miami was the last team
to play Tech there, a game Tech won, and was the fi rst ACC
team to play in McCamish Pavilion, which Miami won. For the
2011-12 season, Tech played its home games at Philips Arena
and the Arena at Gwinnett.
TECH NOTEBOOKin Tokyo, Japan, winning both games.
Other regular-season trips outside the 50 states for Tech
in its basketball history include the 1997 Puerto Rico Shootout
(Bayamon, P.R.), the 2007 Paradise Jam (St. Thomas, U.S.
Virgin Islands) and the 2010 Puerto Rico Tip-Off (San Juan,
P.R.). Tech also played four regular-season games in Cuba
during the 1925-26 season.
Tech and UCLA will be meeting for the fi fth time. The
Bruins have won three of the previous four contests, most
recently in the championship game of the 2006 Maui Invitational.
Looking Back at 2015-16 Georgia Tech, seeded fourth in the National Invitation
Tournament, saw its 2015-16 season come to an end with a
72-56 loss to No. 2 seed San Diego State in the quarterfi nals of
the National Invitation Tournament at Viejas Arena in San Diego,
Calif. The 2015-16 season ended with Tech’s 24th post-season
appearance in Georgia Tech’s basketball history, and the eighth
appearance for the Yellow Jackets in the NIT.
The Yellow Jackets compiled a 21-15 overall record, the
most wins by a Tech team since the 2009-10 season, and went
8-10 in the ACC, only the 15th team to win as many conference
games in the program’s 37-year history in the league. Only two
Tech teams have won more games overall since 1996.
The Jackets went to San Diego having won eight of
their last 10 games, including an 81-62 victory over Houston
opening round of the NIT and an 83-66 win on the road over
No. 1 seed South Carolina in the second round. Over its last
six regular season games, Tech defeated Florida State, No. 19
Notre Dame, Clemson, Boston College and Pittsburgh, and lost
only to No. 11 Louisville (on the road by three). The Jackets
then defeated Clemson in the fi rst round of the ACC Tournament
before falling to fourth-ranked Virginia.
Along the way, Tech defeated fi ve teams that made the
NCAA Tournament - Green Bay, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, VCU
and Virginia, and defeated two top-10 teams in Notre Dame and
Virginia. Among Tech’s 15 losses were 10 to teams that made
the NCAA Tournament and Louisville, which would have made
the fi eld if not for a self-imposed ban.
• Free basketball - Georgia Tech played in the post-
season for the fi rst time since 2010, when the Yellow Jackets
last played in the NCAA Tournament. Tech played in the NIT for
the fi rst time since 2003, and advanced to the quarterfi nals for
the fourth time.
• Twenty-something - The Yellow Jackets earned their
fi rst 20-win season since 2009-10, and their fourth in the last
20 years. Tech has won 20 games in a season 15 times in its
history. Only two Tech teams have won more games since 1996
- the 2004 Final Four team (28) and the 2010 NCAA second-
round team (23).
• Tough at home - Tech fi nished the season 14-5
at home, percentage-wise its best home record, and its most
home wins, in fi ve seasons under Brian Gregory. The Jackets,
who closed out the home schedule with fi ve straight wins, had
not posted a better home record since going 14-2 in 2009-10.
• On the road - Tech was 5-8 in road games last season,
winning at Tulane, NC State, Florida State, Boston College and
South Carolina. The Jackets last won fi ve road games in the
2013-14 season, and last won six road games in the 2007-08
season.
• Experienced - According to KenPom.com, Tech had
the ninth most experienced roster in the nation, with an average
number of years experience at 2.37. Tech had fi ve seniors (one
a fi fth-year), three juniors (one in his fourth year in the program)
and four sophomores (one in his third year).
• Historical reference - In Tech’s 37 years in the ACC,
15 Yellow Jacket teams have won eight or more ACC games in
the regular season. Only four have won nine or more.
Arts and Letters Beginning with Moe Miller and Lance Storrs in the
summer of 2011, every four-year senior in the Georgia Tech
program has graduated.
Derek Craig and Nick Foreman received their Tech
degrees in 2012, as did the 2013 senior class of Mfon Udofi a,
who fi nished his business administation degree work in the
summer, and Pierre Jordan, who completed his Masters degree
requirements in building construction in the spring. Brandon
Reed graduated in the summer with his management degree
before transferring back to Arkansas State to play his fi nal year
of basketball.
All three of Tech’s four-year seniors in 2013-14 -
Kammeon Holsey, Daniel Miller and Jason Morris - graduated
that spring. Robert Sampson, the Jackets’ only undergraduate
scholarship senior in 2014-15, graduated in the spring.
From the 2015-16 squad, Marcus Georges-Hunt walked
the stage at commencement in May, accomplishing the rare
feat of graduating in four years. Point guard Travis Jorgenson,
who elected not to use his fi nal year of eligiblity, will receive his
degree in December.
This year’s roster includes seniors Corey Heyward (fi fth-
year because of an injury red-shirt in 2012-13), Rand Rowland
and Quinton Stephens. Rowland graduate in December, and the
other two are scheduled to graduate in May.
Georges-Hunt and current junior Tadric Jackson have
made the Academic All-ACC team twice, and the Yellow Jackets
have had at least one player named to that team since it was
instituted for the 2010-11 season.
Tech’s men’s basketball team has recored the highest
Academic Progress Report scores the last four years since the
NCAA began tracking academic performance in 2004-05. The
Jackets scored a perfect team single year APR score of 1000
three straight years from 2011-13.

Four Tech Alumni on NBA Rosters Four former Georgia Tech basketball stars were on NBA
rosters when the season began.
Iman Shumpert, a fi ve-year NBA veteran, begins his
second full season in Cleveland after helping the Cavaliers win
the NBA championship a year ago.
Thaddeus Young, in his 10th season, was traded to the
Indiana Pacers during the off-season after two years in Brooklyn.
Derrick Favors has emerged as a key fi gure in his sixth
season in Utah.
Anthony Morrow, a nine-year NBA veteran after catching
on with Golden State as a free agent in 2009, is now in his third
season in Oklahoma City.
Jarrett Jack, a 12-year NBA veteran who suffered a knee
injury last January while with Brooklyn, was signed by the Atlanta
Hawks during the off-season but then was cut by the team in the
last week of training camp while continuing his recovery.
Chris Bosh, who spent the fi rst seven years of his NBA
career in Toronto, played his sixth season in Miami but saw his
season cut short by a heart condition for the second year in a
row. He remains under contract to the Heat but has not played.
Welcome to The Hank Georgia Tech has played four seasons in McCamish
Pavilion, which was for all intents and purposes, brand new when
it opened for the 2012-13 season. The only physical elements
of McCamish Pavilion that remain from the venerable Alexander
Memorial Coliseum are the roof, which was re-covered, and the
32 steel ribs that support it.
The capacity of McCamish Pavilion is 8,600, including
1,665 seats in the new balcony level and 6,935 seats in the
lower seating bowl. There are no suites, but there is a premium
club area that seats 500. Alexander Memorial Coliseum seated
9,191 spectators in its fi nal confi guration.
The most striking features of McCamish Pavilion are its
grand entrance, which fronts 10th and Fowler Streets, the ability
for patrons to view the court from the main concourse nearly
all the way around, and the theatrical lighting system, which
concentrates light on the court while leaving the seating areas
dark, modeled after the Staples Center in Los Angeles and

the event 16 times in its history. Fifteen of those appearances
have occurred from 1985 to the present.
Tech has a record of 23-16 in NCAA Tournament play,

a Final Four berth in 1990. The Yellow Jackets have reached
the NCAA Sweet 16 seven times (1960, 1985, 1986, 1990,
1992, 1996, 2004).
The 2004 and 2005 appearances were the Yellow
Jackets’ fi rst back-to-back appearances since Bobby Cremins

93.
Georgia Tech has won at least one game in 11 of its 16
NCAA Tournament appearances.

Tech team.
• Tech also made the quarterfi nals in 1998 with a team
led by No. 2 all-time leading scorer Matt Harpring, defeating
Seton Hall and Georgetown before losing to Penn State, 75-70.
All three games were played at home.
• Tech reached the fi nals in 1971 behind its all-time
leading scorer, Rich Yunkus, defeating LaSalle, Michigan and St.
Bonaventure before losing to North Carolina in the championship
game. The entire tournament was played at Madison Square
Garden in those days.
Tech’s ACC Tournament History Georgia Tech has played in 37 ACC Tournaments, and has
a 26-34 all-time record in the event. The Yellow Jackets have

BIO UPDATES
Head Coach Josh PastnerJosh Pastner, who guided Memphis to fi ve post-season berths in seven seasons as the
Tigers’ head coach, was introduced as Georgia Tech’s 14th head basketball coach on
April 8, 2016.
Pastner, 39, compiled a 167-73 record over seven seasons as the head coach at
Memphis, where the Tigers earned bids to the NCAA Tournament four times. He is tied for the
10th most wins for a head coach in his fi rst seven seasons in Division I basketball history, and
is the second winningest active coach under the age of 40 in NCAA Division I.
Despite his young age, Pastner has been involved in basketball at the Division I level for
20 years, as a player and an assistant coach at Arizona, and as an assistant coach and the
head coach at Memphis. He has been a part of teams that have won 490 games, played in
17 NCAA Tournaments and 18 total post-season events. Teams he has been involved with
have won 12 conference tournament or regular-season championships, advanced to seven
Sweet Sixteens, fi ve Elite Eights, two Final Fours and two NCAA championship games.
As an NCAA head or assistant coach and an AAU head coach, he has coached nearly 25
NBA draft selections.
Pastner’s Memphis teams averaged 23.9 wins per season and compiled a conference
regular-season record of 82-36, including a conference winning streak of 28 games. The
Tigers went 11-4 in Conference USA and American Athletic Conference tournaments,
including three championships.
He guided Memphis to fi ve post-season berths, the NIT in 2010 and the NCAA
Tournament in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. He became one of three head coaches in
Tigers history to earn postseason berths in fi ve of his fi rst seven seasons (Larry Finch, John
Calipari are the others), one of two to lead the program to four NCAA Tournaments in his fi rst
seven seasons (Dana Kirk is the other) and one of three head coaches in program history to
lead the Tigers to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances (2011-14; joins Dana Kirk
1982-85, John Calipari 2006-09).
Pastner twice won Conference USA Coach of the Year honors (2010, 2013) by various
organizations and news media. Known as a tireless recruiter, he was named the country’s No.
7 high-major recruiter by FoxSports.com following the 2007-08 season, and has signed fi ve
straight nationally-ranked recruiting classes, including the nation’s No. 1 class in 2010 and
No. 2 class in 2013.
A native of Kingwood, Texas, Pastner was born in Glen Dale, W.Va. He earned his
bachelor’s degree in family studies in December of 1998, in just two and a half years, from
Arizona and his master’s degree in teaching and teacher education from Arizona in December
of 1999, all while lettering four years in basketball for the Wildcats under head coach Lute
Olson.
He married the former Kerri Lamas of Sierra Vista, Ariz., in 2009. He has a stepson
(Ethan) and three daughters, Payten, Kamryn and Harper.
