This 2-part workshop will provide a both hands-on practice, and facilitate understanding of recovery for wellness planning with children, teens and adults.

[email protected] Jankowski began the Sewing Machine Project in 2005. With an emphasis on collecting and distributing sewing machines to those in need, the SMP strives, first and foremost, to build community. In this session, Margaret will share the organization’s history, along with observations and and lessons learned, reminding each of us that we have the power and responsibility to make the world a better place.

Judy Knudsen, Family Living Educator, Brown County, UW Extension [email protected] Community Food Challenge is an interactive experience designed to increase awareness of food security issues by simulating challenges teens living in limited income situations face in obtaining adequate nutritious foods. Participants need to purchase the recommended number of servings per food groups based on the USDA’s MyPlate for one day after monthly expenses are paid.

Oakbrook III - 1.0 CFCS PDU Facebook Networking. Sarah Puddy, FCS Educator, Fond du Lac School District [email protected] network with other FCS teachers and learn about the FCS Facebook page that has over 4000 members, and google websites where educators share assessments.

Odana C - 1.0 CFCS PDU Utilizing iCEV in Today’s FCS Classroom. Dave Rizzardi, CT Curriculum Consultant, CEV Media [email protected] session will be led by an iCEV Coach who will explain the functionality of the online curriculum platform as well as teaching strategies for utilizing the curriculum in Family and Consumber Sciences classrooms. The main objectives are to explain uses of technology and online curriculum, identify implementation methods of interative resources and identify methods in which students can obtain industy-backed certifications.

Grand Canyon A, B - 1.0 CFCS PDUEvening Session“It’s Not Like I’m Poor: How Working Families Make Ends Meet in a Post Welfare World.” Sarah Halpern-Meekin, Ph.D., Department of Human Development and Family Studies in the School of Human Ecology, UW-Madison [email protected] year, at tax season, millions of lower-income working families receive a windfall: thousands of dollars in the form of a tax refund check from the federal government, much of it from the Earned Income Tax Credit. We explore how families use this money and what it means to them.

When the goal is shelf-stable food, food science techniques need to be applied. Atmospheric Steam Canners are one new approach to safe food preservation if used according to research directives.

Learn how to use all those mobile applications and websites out there in a manner that is engaging and useful in the FACS classroom. This happens through the interface of personal mobile devices and correlated to the curriculum standards set forth for Family and Consumer Sciences coursework.

Breakout Sessions continuedOdana A, B - 1.0 CFCS PDUGatekeeper Training, QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) for Suicide PreventionJean Papalia, QPR Coordinator, Suicide Prevention Training, Safe Communities of Madison-Dane County [email protected] CPR, QPR uses a “chain of survival” approach in which the gatekeeper learns to recognize early suicide warning signs, Question their meaning to determine suicide intent or desire, Persuade the person to accept or seek help, and Refer the person to appropriate resources. Ask a question, save a life.

Alyssa Anderson, FCS Teacher, Pittsville High School [email protected] Local Foods course at Pittsville High School is almost entirely funded by garden produce from the community. The class focuses on foods that are grown in our local area. We use different techniques to preserve food, such as canning, freezing, thawing and drying.

Christine Kniep, Department Head/Family Living Educator, Winnebago County, UW Extension [email protected] prevalence of Grandparents raising and providing care for grandchildren continues to increase. The reasons for this phenomena range from compassion to court ordered. The impact on family members range from changing retirement plans to family conflict/breakdown. Learn more about this family type and the support they need.

Duncan, Assistant Professor of Sociology, UW- Stevens Point [email protected] striving to be more inclusive, there is the need to stay informed on the legal and social responses to the LGBTQ+ community. This means understanding terminology, fluidity of gender and sexuality, current issues in the LGBTQ+ community, and how to be an ally for LGBTQ+ children, parents, and families.

Kim will share information about essential oils, including how they may benefit you and your family.

Gerri Gurman, Degrees in Physical Eduction, Dance Education and Elementary Education, currently teaching Mindfulness and Meditation in various venues. [email protected] Gurman, Choreographer, dance and integrated arts educator, Tai Chi and Qigong practitioner and meditation teacher, will offer body and mind practices that are accessible to anyone. Blending her dance experience with Tai Chi, Qigong (slow, sustained motion) and mindfulness meditation, she has created movement experiences that offer a respite from the intensity of modern life. Whether you are retired or an employed teacher, health professional, counselor, student, care giver or in any other field, these practices may help you replenish and resort your energy and sense of wellbeing.
