ALL WIRED UP BY THOMAS BARKER

OPULENT DINING FOR A CAUSEAs a community publication, we have always done what we can to support the various gay rights and service organizations in South Florida. Three years ago, I created Summerfest as a fundraising event for The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and have continued to organize the event every year. A year later, I also launched

the Equality Florida Bar Crawl to not only generate some funds, but to also bring our community together. And if you regularly read this column, you’ve probably noticed that I sit on a good amount of boards and committees, including the Equality Florida Gala Steering Committee, Miami Beach Gay Pride, and the Gay Business Enhancement Committee for the City of Miami Beach.

As a result, Wire Magazine has always been a little different than most other publications. We don’t just report on the happenings of these organizations and events; we actually play a pivotal role in the creation and execution of their initiatives. There is a social responsibility – especially for gay lifestyle publications – to not only sponsor events, but to actually get involved directly and make a difference.

This year, we will continue to do what we can to support our local and national organizations. In fact, we are already in the process of gearing up for Summerfest ’11, and are finalizing our partnership arrangements with a number of organizations and events, including Miami Beach Gay Pride ’11, Winter Party ’11, White Party ’11, and many, many more.

In this week’s issue, you will notice an ad for the 1st Annual Equality Florida Friends, Family, and Allies Dinner, hosted by Wire Magazine. The event will take place on Thursday, January 27th at the super fabulous Asia de Cuba at The Mondrian in South Beach, and is a fundraising event for the largest gay rights organization in the state.

As a major supporter of Equality Florida, Wire Magazine has come on board as a promotional and production sponsor for the event, meaning we aren’t just promoting the event in the pages of Wire Magazine; we are actually producing the fundraising dinner for Equality Florida.

Working closely with the staff of Asia de Cuba, we have put together an amazing menu that will feature some of the restaurant’s most popular dishes. The evening will begin at 7 p.m. with a one-hour cocktail reception that will include complimentary vodka cocktails and wine.

Afterwards, diners will sit down to enjoy a three-course meal, which will be paired with wine from the Sonoma-Cutrer Vineyards, courtesy of Brown Forman.

The 1st Annual Friends, Family, and Allies Dinner will serve as the kick off fundraising event for Equality Florida’s Annual Miami Gala, which will take place on Sunday, March 20th. This year, we will be hosting the event at one of Miami’s most exclusive venues – The Webster in South Beach. Thanks to some incredibly generous people, hundreds of South Florida donors will get the chance to enjoy fantastic cocktails and delicious hors d’oeuvres from the Webster’s restaurant, Caspia – all while supporting Equality Florida and the important work that they do.

If you are interested in joining us for the Equality Florida Friends, Family, and Allies Dinner on January 27th, the Annual Equality Florida Miami Gala on March 20th, or both, visit www.eqfl.org for more information or to purchase tickets.

I implore you to do what you can to support organizations like this. Not only are gatherings such as these a lot of fun; it is also really important to support the people who work tirelessly to defend and protect our rights.

Till next week!

Last week I encouraged you to keep the heat on local, state, and federal politicians to cut spending and bring public labor union contracts into balance with the new income realities of our national, state, and city tax revenues. Well,

my friends, we really have to do this and take it seriously. We have to be particularly diligent and firm with our politicians in our own backyard. Otherwise, South Florida could end up like Sunny Taxesfornia – I mean California – or Taxesnois – I mean Illinois.

California and Illinois are large economies when compared with many countries, and just like Ireland, Greece, Portugal, Spain, and Italy, its expenses have far exceeded tax revenues, and they are buried under mountains of debt. This has led to large budget deficits, ratings downgrades for their bonds, higher interest rates to borrow money, the real possibility of default, and the need for a potential bailout by their rich uncle, Sam. For example, just like Ireland got a bailout loan package from the European Economic community, this week there was talk of the real possibility that California, Illinois, or other U.S. states may ask the Obama administration or the Federal Reserve to bail them out – at our federal taxpayers’ expense, off course.

In the end, someone is going to pay the bill. Our "trusty" politicians always start with the same old tax the rich story, followed by cutting back much needed programs to help the poor, the elderly, and other needy groups who are much less important to them than their cronies in the public employee labor unions. The poor are already hungry, and many of the elderly and the less fortunate are already doing without and making trade offs between much needed medicines or food. These programs should not be cut.

It was okay to dole out expensive contracts to public employee labor unions with good salaries, excellent benefits, and expensive pensions during the go-go years. So politicians now need to renegotiate these labor union contracts to reduce compensation, benefits, and pension expenses. Remember the steel industry and the car industry and the changes made to labor union contracts there? Those were

renegotiated because it was do or die for those industries. Do the same and stop raising our taxes.

Illinois politicians, where President Obama learned and practiced his political skills, did not have the backbone to adjust expenses to match revenues. Instead, Governor Quinn and his fellow Democrats decided to push through a 75 percent personal income tax increase. Personal income taxes will increase from 3 percent to 5.25 percent for four years. What a joke! These so called “policy makers” can’t even change their past policies to readjust expenses so personal income taxes don’t have to be raised by 75 percent. If politicians are willing to do that when we are barely crawling out of the Great Recession, anything is possible. So let me share with you what a possible bailout of one or more U.S. states by federal taxpayers would look like. Rich uncle Sam bailed out rich (now richer) Wall Street banks, and the car companies in Detroit (Illinois); so why not one or more states?

The Obama Administration could use a straight out bailout plan and simply give the states money to pay for their deficits and prevent a default. It can be either a money giveaway or a “loan” to be repaid sometime, somehow. What’s a few billion more on top of the ever-rising trillion-dollar national debt? The other way to do it is for the Federal Reserve to simply print money. The Fed can give money to the states by buying up their worthless debt that no-one else wants. Simply put, you can print money and give it to a dead beat that spends more than they make and cannot pay the bills. Technically speaking, the Fed will buy state bonds.

For anyone who does not think we are facing a very serious problem I invite you to read about Spain. Just a few years ago, it was the darling of Europe with lots of great social programs for all, a fast growing economy, and ever-climbing real estate prices. It is now an economic disaster under a mount of debt, and the Spanish people are really suffering.

PUBLISHERS’ CORNER

6 | wire magazine | wireweekly.com

This week and last week have probably been the busiest weeks ever for Thomas and I working on wire magazine. Why? For a couple of very good reasons: We have been working very hard on producing our second ever Pride collector’s edition of wire magazine – that we think you will really enjoy reading through. In

addition, we have also been working non-stop on the first ever official Gay Pride Pool Party, which Wire magazine will host on Saturday, April 17th at the hotel Victor with Finlandia Vodka and herradura Tequila as sponsors.

It really is hard to believe that a year has already gone by since we published the first ever Pride Collector’s Edition of Wire magazine, but that is definitely the case. Pride is once again taking place in miami Beach this Saturday and we hope that all our readers in miami and Fort lauderdale will have a chance to enjoy this week’s 2010 Pride Collector’s Edition. We couldn’t have gotten here without all your support, and the support of our advertisers, sponsors, and all the members of the Wire staff. Thanks very much to everyone for helping us make this possible!

We also hope that you will be able to participate in the Pride festivities on Saturday, plus many of the ancillary

events and parties taking place before and after Saturday’s parade, Expo, and day of fabulous live entertainment. That’s why we are including a comprehensive Pride Guide that you can use as your map of what to participate in, with the days and times to be there.

We also want to extend a warm Wire invitation and welcome you to join us for the first ever official Gay Pride Pool Party at the hotel Victor, 1144 ocean Drive. We decided to put together a unique event for you during this year’s Pride, courtesy of Wire magazine, to celebrate and have fun in the company of friends. The pool party will complement the Parade, Expo, and live entertainment on the main stages of Pride, and will give everyone an opportunity for some additional fun at the poolside party taking place from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. this Saturday. DJs charlmix and miik will be spinning, while everyone enjoys their 2 complimentary Finlandia vodka cocktails included with their ticket purchase.

make sure to stop by our Wire magazine booth to pick up your copy of this week’s special issue of Wire and enter our contest, but definitely stop by and visit us in person at the hotel Victor to celebrate Pride during the day with us at the pool party. We will be camping out at the Victor to bring you some additional fun in the sun. Wire also wants to welcome

our pool party VIP ticket holders. Thanks for purchasing all the VIP tickets we had available (VIP is SOLD OUT). The hotel Victor pool deck will be a great place for our VIP ticket holders to hang out from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and view the Pride Parade from above.

To join us for the pool party after the VIP Parade viewing, visit www.thepinkdollar.com/pridepp to purchase your tickets at the pre-event price, or stop by the hotel Victor on Saturday and buy your ticket at the door. You will receive 2 complimentary Finlandia vodka cocktails, plus be able to partake in an official Pride event that Wire magazine has worked very hard to put together for you. Oh, and did you hear? Some Papi underwear models will be at the pool party wearing their latest collections?

have a wonderful week, and feel free to stop us on the streets of miami, the Beaches, and Fort Lauderdale to share your thoughts and ideas with Wire magazine. We welcome your feedback and suggestions to continue providing great lifestyle content for our readers.

WIRE COVER: WHOOPI GOLDBERG: SHE NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION

If you love comedy and film, like I do, Whoopi Goldberg has to be one of your favorite actresses and comediennes. She really needs no introduction, but after my interview with the star, I realized there are some things you may not know about the award winning comic.

Caryn Elaine Johnson, the incomparable Whoopi Goldberg, has had a brilliant career that includes receiving the quadruple crown of acting: Oscar, Tony, Emmy, and Grammy! What a journey for a hard working woman who, early in her career, took small parts on Broadway, while supplementing her income by working in a funeral parlor applying makeup to corpses and as a bricklayer.

Old Blue Eyes put it best: “If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere!” Therefore, it should come as no surprise that Whoopi, born in Chelsea in Manhattan, has conquered the world with her amazing talents and accomplishments. Some of my personal favorites include her movie and TV roles in The Color Purple, Ghost, Sister Act, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Comic Relief, and

The View, amongst many other great leading roles and comedic performances.

Whoopi was the first woman to host the Academy Awards by herself, went on to entertain us on Oscar night a total of four times, and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Even though she is fearless in front of the camera and on stage, Whoopi hates to fly and travels by personal bus – telling Jay Leno once that it takes 42 hours of non-stop travel to go from New York City to L.A. this way. You may remember a recent scandal on The View, as Whoopi was forced to fly and had to drug herself to get through it. As a result, the queen of funny looked a little disoriented. Of course, she immediately bounced back and continues to be the fan favorite on the show.

But with all of her accomplishments, Whoopi is also known the world over for her advocacy and support of human rights, including vocally encouraging straight people to stand up and support the GLBT community to stop discrimination.

So when I heard Whoopi was coming to perform at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, as part of their Comedy Planet series, I jumped at the chance to interview this remarkable Oscar winning actress and comedienne. Check out what Whoopi had to say. What are you looking forward to the most about your upcoming show in Miami?

Getting onstage and seeing what my brain tells my mouth to say. You have such an amazing career. Did you ever dream it would be this way when you were an up and coming comedienne and actress?

I was raised by a woman who told me that anything was possible. But I don’t think anyone expected all of this, least of all me. What do you enjoy the most about doing stand-up comedy?

CELEBRITY AUTOBIOGRAPHYMay 5 to 15A first rate comedic ensemble performs from the actual memoirs of a wide range of celebrities. The passages run the gamut from the "poetry" of Suzanne Somers to the shocking "romance tips" from Tommy Lee to the most famous Hollywood love triangle in history - Elizabeth Taylor, Debbie Reynolds, and Eddie Fisher. And what's remarkable and unforgettably hilarious is that it is all in their own words.

COMEDY PLANET SERIES UPCOMING PERFORMANCES

I’ll let you know if I ever do stand-up. I’ve never done set-ups and punch-lines, it’s not my thing. I just like to talk about things I see and my observations of the world around me. Why did you decide to become an actress?

If I didn’t, the voices inside my head would have gotten me into a lot of trouble. Who have been your favorite co-stars and why?

There have been so many; I couldn’t even remember all of them. I recently got together with the cast of “The Color Purple” for a 25th anniversary reunion on Oprah. It was great to see all of them again. I worked with Neil Patrick Harris on a movie called “Clara’s Heart” when he was 12. It’s been fun watching him grow up in this business and becoming the person and performer he is. How did it feel to win your Oscar? What went through your mind the moment you heard you had won?

My mind went blank. It was surreal. What do you like the most about being on The View?

Hot topics. How do you really feel about Bill O’Reilly today?

I respect Bill and he respects me. Even if we don’t always agree. How is it working with Barbara Walters?

Barbara is the queen. You have been very supportive of the gay and lesbian Community. Why do you feel it is so important to be so supportive?

It would never occur to me not to. What do you think about the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell?

Finally. What should be the next major step for gay rights in the U.S.?

That they are no longer gay rights and just human rights. What is next for Whoopi? Your own network maybe?

A nap.

WIRE FEATURE: OY VEY! MY SON IS GAY HITS THEATERS

BY THOMAS BARKER

As children, we grow up dreaming about the lives that lie ahead of us and hope that our future goals and aspirations will one day change the world. We daydream of accomplishments and recognition, and, as a result, develop projects that will one day lead us to this inevitable feat.

Along the way, we meet many unexpected people, experience unforetold adventures, and evolve as a person and in our career path. For most, this changes future goals and aspirations. But for Evgeny Afineevsky, his dreams and goals have never wavered. His lifetime goal was to write, produce, and direct a film that would inspire many and above all else take what some people consider gay cinema out of the backrooms of independent movie-houses and into the many mainstream theaters around the world.

And after eight years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance, Evgeny’s dream finally became a reality with the release of his latest film, Oy Vey! My Son is Gay! in December of 2009! Since the release of his film, it has quickly become a film festival favorite, winning over 22 awards from a variety of film festivals, including the Moscow International Film Festival, the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival, and even Miami’s own Jewish Film Festival.

And there’s very good reason for the film’s success. Beyond the fabulous award winning cast that includes the likes of Golden Globe, Emmy, and Tony Award nominee Lainie Kazan, Emmy Award winner Jai Rodriguez, and the gorgeous Carmen Electra, among others, this movie tells a very important story that we can all relate to:

Boy meets boy, boys falls in love with boy, and boy moves in with boy. The only problem: one of these boys has yet to come out to his overtly stereotypical Jewish family. And as Nelson Hirsch, played by John Lloyd Young, tries to come out to his self-centered mother, Lainie Kazan, and his semi-homophobic father, Vincent Pastore, you can’t help but laugh and relate to those awkward moments.

Eventually, Nelson makes his way out of the closet, and hits his family with another big surprise, he and his boyfriend Angelo Ferraro, Jai Rodriguez, are the first gay couple allowed to adopt a child in their state, sparking tons of controversy.

Without giving away the entire store, I will tell you that Oy Vey! My Son is Gay! is one of the most heartwarming and hilarious films I’ve seen in a while, and I totally recommend it. Luckily it will be playing in Miami at a number of theaters, including The Regal South Beach, AMC in Aventura, Sunrise Intercostal, and Regal Cinemas Delray 18, among others. For screening locations and times, visit www.fandango.com.

After seeing the film, I just had to sit down with cast member and Emmy award winning comedienne Bruce Vilanch about his experience with the film and take on the future of cinema. As always, Bruce had some super cheaky bits to offer up. Just check out what he had to say:

WIRE FEATURE: OY VEY! MY SON IS GAY HITS THEATERS

How did you get involved with the film, Oy Vey My Son is Gay? This crazy Russian kept pursuing me to do a rewrite on this script. Then he said he wanted me to be in it, so I wound up rewriting it as I went along... but just jokes. He saw me in HAIRSPRAY as Edna Turnblad, so I assumed he wanted me to play Lainie Kazan, not her brother.

What attracted you most about this film? The chance to be funny on a screen as large as I was 100 pounds ago. What is your role in the film? Suspicious Uncle Max, about whom no one is quite sure. He's Lainie's brother and they are both long-suffering, but they both have their outlets. Can you summarize the story for us? An old-school Jewish couple and an old-school Italian couple discover their sons are a) gay, b) getting married, and c) having a baby. It's a nightmare trifecta, and their responses are hilarious. How long did it take to shoot the film? Eighteen days, which is the standard for an independent film, as it is for a TV-movie. You got to work with Carmen Electra and Lainie Kazan, so I am sure some crazy fun things had

to have happened on set. Anything you can share with us? Carmen took a bubble bath and that proved to be the most popular day for visitors in the history of the studio. I understand that it has received a number of awards. Is that true? Evgeny, aka the crazy Russian, can tell you, but I believe a few festivals have honored it, as well as my mother. Why do you think this film has been so successfully received? It's funny, and it's meant to be seen with a crowd. Every time people see it in a theatre full of people, they love it. What makes this film so unique? The Jews are played by Jews, except for one. What do you hope to accomplish with this movie? Buy a house on the beach, but perhaps I should have appeared in AVATAR. Would you consider this film to be a typical gay movie? Why or why not? If it's not cutting edge and radical, queers won't embrace it because its protagonists are old-school and their reactions, politically incorrect. But they seem to connect

with an old-school audience nevertheless, and how is that bad? Do you feel that we are progressing in the quality of cinema produced by the gay community? Not really, no. Everybody with a cell phone can now make a lousy coming-out movie and they have. But our volume is up, so the odds of finding nuggets in there have increased. You have had a very successful career being the funny bone behind a lot of funny people. How did that happen? It was that or strip. I met Bette Midler 40 years ago -- difficult, as she is only 32 -- and began writing for her. She was a hit, and a lot of people wanted some of her fairy dust. And there I was with my wand… a career is born. What projects are you currently working on? The Academy Awards, on ABC, Feb 27. My 22nd year attempting to amuse you through categories like Sound Effects Editing. This year, I hope to have every winner dance the black swan!

TOP TRAX: KEYSHIA COLE - CALLING ALL HEARTS BY DJ FR8-O

As the New Year rolls on, resolutions are affirmed, bad habits are broken (or formed), and changes are happening all over the place. At least that’s the case with Keyshia Cole’s new CD “Calling All hearts.” On her fourth album with Geffen/Interscope Records the usually outspoken diva shows us her softer side and once again reminds us why she is constantly being compared to R&B and Soul legends like Mary J. Blige. Keyshia worked her way up to success very early in life, making her major debut when she was only 21-years old. Growing up on the harsh streets of Oakland, California, Cole knew she wanted to make music her life, so much so that she started chasing record deals while still a preteen. Some of her earlier work includes collaborations with MC Hammer back when she was only twelve years old. But her dreams started to take flight when she appeared on Messy Marv's “Nubian Queen” remix in 2001 and the soundtrack to the film “Me & Mrs. Jones.”

Girlfriend eventually moved to L.A. and it wasn’t long before A&M Records’ President Ron Fair signed her to a solo deal and recorded her debut album, “The Way It Is.” She suddenly found herself right up there with other young urban female singers like Brandy, Monica, and Beyoncé, but Keyshia was unique. Having grown up in Oakland, she knew life wasn't all glitter and gold like it was in Hollywood and that angst and grit showed in her music. Now almost two years after her last album “A Different Me”, Keyshia’s back with another collection of tracks, giving us every side of the soulful songstress. From the vulnerable inner child to the love-stricken teenage girl and strong independent woman, it’s all there. When the album dropped in December, it debuted at number nine on the US Billboard 200 chart and at number five on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, proving that Keyshia Cole may be one of 2011’s ones to watch. Keyshia kicks off her latest collection with the so-appropriate “I Ain’t Through” backed by another artist who’s been getting her own share of the media buzz lately, Nicki Minaj. Together these ladies set the stage for what’s about to be one of the most honest albums I’ve heard in a long time. “Long Way Down” reminds us of the heartbreak Keyshia went through earlier in her career when she discovered her boyfriend was cheating. But she delivers the track with the same headstrong determination she showed the day she got on that plane to L.A. and never looked back. Producers J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League definitely

earned their name on this one, dropping hard beats on what otherwise could have been just another sad ballad.

“Tired of Doing Me” features yet another rising star, Tank. Even with these two amazing voices complementing each other on this ballad about moving on, it just seemed to linger a little too long. If you’re gonna collaborate with anyone on an R&B track, Faith Evans is your girl! Producers Big WY and Tweek Beats back up the divas’ soulful duet “If I Fall in Love Again” with an addictive baseline that’ll leave you wishing it was just another minute longer (insert sad face here). “So Impossible”, yet another ballad produced by Janet Jackson’s dream team, Jimmy Jam Terry Luis, was a little disappointing considering what they’ve done for Janet (Miss Jackson if you’re nasty).

The acoustic guitar intro on “Sometimes” is a welcomed switch from the almost-repetitive sounds of the other ballads on this album, but no less soulful. Next, Keyshia takes a break from her deep thoughts and brings the beat back on “Take Me Away”. Like a true musical genius, producer Chink Santana takes all the best parts of falling in love and rolls them all into this uplifting track that fits Keyshia’s optimistic vocals to a “T”. Thankfully Keyshia hasn’t completely let go of the hard-edged alter ego that got her where she is today. The Timbaland produced “Last Hangover” brings her back for a hot second, cheering her vocals along as she kicks another scrub to da curb. We all have our list of people to thank for our successes in life. In Keyshia’s case, the big guy upstairs takes the top spot. If you follow a different faith, you might wanna skip through “Thank You” altogether and go straight to the Diane Warren penned “Better Me”, where Keyshia praises another special someone for making her who she is today. The theme may sound pretty generic, but it’s Diane Warren dammit!

If Soul and R&B are your thing, you should definitely grab the Deluxe Edition, which gives you three extra tracks worth having. “Calling All Hearts” is nowhere near a Pop album, so don’t expect any Gaga, Britney, or even Beyoncé on this one. You won’t find any catchy hooks or obnoxiously repetitive choruses here, but if you’re over all that noise, don’t worry. Keyshia’s got your number.

If you’re a DJ, producer or artist and would like your song, album or remix featured in TOP TRAX, gimme a shout at [email protected].
